There is a free AAC Networking Meeting/Coffee House at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month. These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, and workshops every month at Simple Pleasures in St Albans.
The ongoing AAC-Welcome Center exhibit at the Highgate Springs Border station will host over a dozen Franklin County artists this year. We will display each featured artist for one month. ART ON THE WALLS
On Saturday, seventh generation Vermont artist Corliss Blakely will open a show of original watercolor paintings of landscapes and the still-life of Vermont
The current Mary Harper portrait and rustic barnside exhibit continues through tomorrow.
Bay Days and the Got Milk Summer Sounds concerts team up this Sunday with four renowned musical groups offering continuous music through the afternoon and into the fireworks. BAY DAYS GETS MILK
Burt Paquin Ford, Handy Chevrolet-Olds, Handy Dodge-Toyota, Handy Pontiac-Buick-Cadillac-GMC, Moore Lincoln-Mercury, North Country Nissan, and Paquin Motors present the 40th Army Band in their first Got Milk Summer Sounds appearance at 7 p.m. on the bath house patio in St Albans Bay Park.
The Army Band program is Around the World, a take off on Around the World in 80 Days. "It has songs representative of the various nations," said Sgt First Class Patricia Eisenman, Readiness NCO for the 40th Army Band. "That means chief cook and bottle washer," she said.
There will be selections from South Pacific and Fiddler on the Roof plus Variations on a Korean Folk Song. That piece is particularly timely with the exciting Korean developments in the news now.
Stationed in Colchester, the 40th Army Band includes a Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, and other smaller performing groups. The unit performs in military ceremonies, community parades, and various public concerts. The band has recently traveled to Italy and Panama to play concerts throughout those countries. They were awarded the Vermont National Guard Outstanding Unit Award. The Band is under the direction and leadership of Chief Warrant Officer David Myers of Georgia, Vermont.
"We drill one weekend each month and two weeks year as members of the Army National Guard," said Eisenman. "The rest of the time we're regular people." With 45 members, the band includes teachers, insurance agents, salesmen, students, a lawyer, a carpenter, a school bus driver, and several Information Technology people. "Over one third of this unit of professional musicians has a degree in music and over one third has twenty years of service."
Band members from Franklin County include Kevin Loomis, Highgate, clarinet; trumpets Mike McGovern, Doug Goulette, and Chad Jenkins, saxophones Rick Coon and Les Dudley, Patrick Evans tuba, all of St Albans; flutes Carol Goodrich, Sheldon, and Chara Vincelette-Perocchi, a student at Johnson; saxophones David Baker, Bakersfield, and Gene Nuovo, Richford; and Lauren Gosselin, Swanton, tuba. "Two of the three tubas in the band are from Franklin County," Eisenman said.
The All Arts Council and the St Albans Chamber of Commerce will have a free bus from Taylor Park to the Bay for St Albans City residents only. Although the ride is free, seating is very limited and reservations are required. Pick up free tickets from the St Albans Chamber office. Tickets are first come, first served. The bus will leave from the Church Street side of Taylor Park at about 5:30 p.m. and will return after the 40th Army Band concert. Concessions will be open all day in the Park.
Bay Days also has a tremendous lineup of "opening acts."
The day begins with a headliner as popular Rock & Roll band Bad Horsey opens the continuous entertainment on the Bath House stage. Roy Hartson, lead guitar, Scott Guptill, rhythm guitar, Bryce McNall, vocals, Dale Fisher, drums, and Miles Trudell, bass guitar will play the favorite songs and theatrics from the 70s, 80s and 90s. 1-3 p.m. on the stage.
Classic rock band TruanT has over 100 years of music and cutting classes between them. Evelyn Kwaanza, vocals, Bob Corey, guitar, Eric Bushey, guitar, Justin Bedell, bass, and Brian Fredette, drums, are popular Franklin County musicians, performers, and teachers. 3-4 and 6-7 p.m. on the stage.
Bay Days is the third gig for Rock Bottom, an experienced new quintet from St Albans. Justin Olds, vocals and bass, Serge Choquette, drums, Harvey Mayo, lead vocals, Brad Raveline, lead and rhythm guitar, and Shawn Hayden, lead and rhythm guitar, play everything from classic rock to the newest Buzz music. 4-6 p.m. on the stage
Got Milk Summer Sounds in St Albans are presented by the Dairy Farmers of Vermont, the City of St Albans, and the All Arts Council of Franklin County, and sponsored by select Franklin County Attorneys, Main Street Merchants and Businesses, Northwestern Medical Center, St Albans Area New Car Dealers, and the St Albans Area Realtors. This Independence Day concert is hosted by the St Albans Area Chamber of Commerce.
The rain site for the 40th Army Band is the Congregational Church on Church Street in St Albans. The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont.
The 40th Army Band also plays a special Independence Day program at Smugglers Notch, starting at 8 p.m. on July 4. 40th ARMY BAND TO PLAY SMUGGLERS
Adjutant General Martha Rainville of St Albans will narrate Aaron Copland's popular Lincoln Portrait, a stirring melding of the words of Abraham Lincoln, including excerpts from the Gettysburg Address, with Copland's strong orchestral music. Written in 1942, the Lincoln Portrait stresses the idea that out of struggle and conflict can come a new birth of Freedom.
That program concludes with the 1812 Overture with cannon.
The Got Milk Summer Sounds concerts suck up a lot of helpers, but last weekend we were doubly blessed. With tornado watches across all of Vermont last Sunday, we had no idea whether the weather would let our outdoor concert stay outdoors. PRODUCTION NOTES
So we set up two complete sound systems. Lyle Glidden of Franklin created an exceptional mix in the Methodist Church and Tim, Dave, and Kathy Stetson of Enosburg did the same in the Highgate Municipal Park.
