STUFF YOU SHOULDN'T MISS

ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column.

There is a free AAC Networking Meeting/Coffee House at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month. These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, and workshops every month at Simple Pleasures in St Albans.

LIFE'S A BEACH

For this Sunday only, Got Milk Summer Sounds volunteers have created a significant sand dune, complete with ocean spray, California Dreams, Good Vibrations, and perhaps some beach blanket bingo, all in Taylor Park. The music will be great as Better Planet Books Toys & Hobbies, The Dressing Room, Drinkwaters, The Gift Gallery, Lorraine's, and Jack Rixon's Pharmacy present Surf's Up at the Taylor Park beach on Sunday at 7 p.m. The concerts are always on Sunday evenings, always in a town park, and always free.
Surf's Up is a tribute to Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys featuring Mark Lurvey, drums and vocals, Phil Abair, keyboards and vocals, Brian Vorse, guitar and vocals, Rick Bazluke, bass and vocals, Hans Jenny, guitar and vocals, and Robin Smith, Lynn Furno, and Carla Crane, female vocals, in a celebration that brings surfing, hot rods, pretty girls, fun, skate boarding, sunshine, pretty girls, harmony, dancing, sandy pants, pretty girls, cruisin'drive-ins, bikinis, first love, the ocean, rock n' roll, and pretty girls straight to Taylor Park. Did you notice that Hans promised three pretty girls?
"Everybody sings," Hans said. "It's going to be 80% Beach boys and there will be plenty of surf instrumentals and some Jan & Dean songs." The band has the striped shirts and authentic instruments of the time including the Fender electric 12-string, the bass stick, the Jaguar, the Stratocaster, and the Precision Bass. Most of them are candy apple red.
Robin Smith and Mark Lurvey played the July AAC CoffeeHouse at Simple Pleasures.
The Beach Boys are one of the most important groups in rock history. With Brian Wilson as composer and producer, they have released 27 studio albums. Their songs have the inspiring, comforting lyrics that everyone sings plus production techniques unheard of at the time.
Just before the concert, stop by for a Bark in the Park with Music at the Franklin County Humane Society social in the Park starting at 6 p.m., while the band surfs in, and continuing through intermission.
Summer Sounds in St Albans are presented by the Dairy Farmers of Vermont, the City of St Albans, and the All Arts Council of Franklin County, and sponsored by select Franklin County Attorneys, Main Street Merchants and Businesses, Northwestern Medical Center, St Albans Area New Car Dealers, and the St Albans Area Realtors. The rain site is the Congregational Church in St Albans. The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont.

VOICES LIFTING FOR JIM

Holy Angels Choir present a Faith Fun and Frolic Concert in Taylor Park Sunday. This benefit for Jim Bashaw is directed by Mary Jo Gillilan
The choir will sing music of the Forties through today including Nobby Reed's River's Edge, Mame, What a Wonderful World, You are My Sunshine, Leaving on a Jet Plane, Bye Bye Love, and Don't Fence Me In. With members of the Holy Angels parish, the choir also features five Grandmas and Grandpas.
The family event includes an ice cream and soda social, Sunday at 2 p.m. Admission is free but donations are strongly encouraged. The rain site is the Holy Angels Church on Lake Street.

CLICK HERE: ART SITE OF THE WEEK

This week, we continue to explore the museums and galleries of some United Nations countries.
Niilofur Farrukh writes about the origins and techniques in the ceramics of Pakistan. Two dominant traditions converge in the clay craft of Pakistan. The folk potter, like his Mehrgarh forefathers caters to the community with everyday earthenware; made for the affluent, the glazed ware of the Kashikar shows its Persian Islamic influence.
Try the famous Mr. Push Me button.
Sometimes, an entire country becomes a dot com. The Peruvian (Peruana) site gives links to the Amazon Peruana Art Project, several art galleries, artists such as Alfredo Bryce, Antonio Garcˇa, and Antonio Herrera, and 7 ensayos de interpretacion de la realidad peruana.
