ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column. STUFF YOU SHOULDN'T MISS
Stop in for the AAC CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of every month. These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and workshops. We come together on the second Wednesday for a booked musical performance and an art exhibit at Simple Pleasures in St Albans. On the fourth Wednesday come to the Kept Writer in St Albans for acoustic Open Mike Night featuring music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

Expo 2001 will feature Art. The Rotary Club of St Albans will fill both handball courts of the Collins Perley Sports Complex with fine oil and watercolor paintings, photography, digital art, and sculpture. COUNTING DOWN TO THE HOME SHOW
One handball court will host the works of Barre artist Fred Swan. The other court will boast the works of Franklin County's best painters, photographers, and sculptors in the All Arts Council annual exhibit. Photographer David Juaire and fine artist Alan DeMont are among the AAC exhibitors. We will profile others in the coming weeks.
Vermont Life photographer David Juaire of Georgia bought a 35mm Minolta in 1977 as a hobby. "I had always admired the photos, the pastoral scenes, I had seen in Vermont Life," said this self taught photographer who likes to experiment with different films and cameras. Although he has photographed people, "my favorite is the scenic photo." He is now shooting with a large format (2¬") Pentax camera for the exceptional clarity it brings enlargements.
He has sold about ten slides to Vermont Life to date. Vermont's top publisher has used his photos on their wall calendar, engagement book, in a tourist guide and in the magazine itself. He is also well known for the 29 photos that have appeared on the Cooperative Insurance calendar. In the early 1980s, WCAX TV used viewer slides for Claudia Reynolds' weather program. 200 were from David Juaire. His subjects this year include the red barns of Enosburg and Sheldon, the Royal Swans, Samuel de Champlain, and a love of fireworks.
David is a realtor with Lang Associates and sells framed enlargements. The AAC will feature his photography at Simple Pleasures starting on Valentine's Day. He also exhibits at NMC and will show again at Chow Bella in June and July.
David wants to start an AAC photographers club and workshop. We will have details at the Home Show.
Born in Detroit, painter Alan DeMont comes from an artistic family. His brother and sister are also accomplished artists, and second cousin, Edward Chesney, is a world renowned sculptor.
Alan works in oils, acylics and even housepaint on canvas, masonite or plywood. "I choose my subject matter from what inspires my life," he said, "from musicians, other artists or the spituality of the Native American." His work shows the free approach of painting from emotion.
He works as a chef at The Tyler Place and lives in St Albans. "This seasonal position affords me the opportunity to paint all winter," he said.
Alan's native American series is presently on exhibit at the Kept Writer. He also has paintings in private collections in Colorado, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania.
There are about 1.2 million Rotarians, in more than 29,000 Rotary clubs in 163 countries. The Rotary Club of St Albans is a service organization of business and professional leaders from around Franklin County. They participate in and administer community service, educational, and sports programs and activities. The 2001 Home and Recreation Exposition is the Rotary's principle fund raiser.
The All Arts handball court will also have special focus areas. We will raffle a well-known work by Vermont artist Corliss Blakely to raise funds for ongoing programs. Student artists from area schools will display current works. The All Arts exhibit at the Rotary Home Show opens Friday, March 9 and continues through Sunday March 11. Many of the works will be available for sale.
LAST CALL for the Abenaki Website Artwork Contest: Tomorrow is the deadline for images or works that capture the essence of the Abenaki people. Any media is acceptable. The contest offers cash prizes and there is no entry fee. Work must be delivered to ASHAI, 100 Grand Avenue, Swanton, by tomorrow. CALLS FOR ARTISTS
ROTARY HOME SHOW--Franklin County artists and photographers can show and sell in the AAC's premier gallery event. AAC members working in paint, digital art, sculpture, and photography should reserve their place this week to exhibit their work before over 12,000 visitors. E-mail the All Arts Council for details.
Members of the All Arts Council will hold an Annual Meeting in the Northwestern Medical Center Conference Center on Thursday, March 1. The meeting is free and open to the public. MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT
Control of the Arts Council rests with the membership. The three-year terms of Directors Melissa Ewell, Lyle Glidden, Anne Harper (secretary), Tim Stetson (treasurer), and Albert Perry expire in March and we lost additional directors when Ania Modzelewski moved to Hawaii and Alice and Ed Astleford moved to Michigan. I am actively recruiting interested nominees; nominations are also welcome from the floor. Members will discuss last year's projects, plan the 2001 season, and elect their directors. I have been assured there will be no dimpled chads, although there may be an artistically painted one.
All new members, current members, former members, potential members, and friends of the local arts of Franklin County are welcome. "I can accept dues from anyone," said treasurer Tim Stetson.

The Bennington Center for the Arts website has concert listings, Native American arts, the Oldcastle Theater Company schedule, paintings, wind sculptures, and the Bennington Center's ongoing fascination with megaliths (13 three-ton slate stones now reside in a 150 foot circle at the arts center).
