Stop in for the AAC CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month. These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and workshops. We come together on the second Wednesday for a booked musical performance and an art exhibit at Simple Pleasures in St Albans. On the fourth Wednesday come to the Kept Writer in St Albans for acoustic Open Mike Night featuring music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.
Concert goers can choose as Summer Sounds almost concludes at both ends of the County with events from A to Z as we visit both St Albans Bay and Highgate this Sunday. This concert series is always on a Sunday evening at 7 p.m., always in a town park, and always free. IT'S STILL SUMMER!
HIGHGATE--On Sunday evening, The Tyler Place presents the Zucchini Brothers in the next to-the-last Summer Sounds concert of 2001 in Highgate Municipal Park at 7 p.m.
The Zucchini Brothers are known as "The Beatles of Kid's Music" as they play a concert of words of wisdom set to a musical stir-fry of foot-tapping tunes. Jack Zucchini, guitar/vocals, began singing about the same time he started eating vegetables. He loves scary books and he's not afraid of the dark as long as the lights are on. Steve Zucchini, keyboards/vocals, loves to sing almost as much as he (and I) enjoy chocolate chip cookies. He also loves reading about anything that has to do with music. Sam Zucchini, drums/vocals, plays his drums twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. He has studied jazz music and firmly believes everyone needs a good eight hours of sleep.
Their daily radio show The Zucchini Brothers, Live! at the Clubhouse won the NAPPA Gold Award and the Parents' Choice Gold Award and is carried by National Public Radio. The Saratoga Springs, New York, group is also well-known for its work in schools, theaters and festivals.
Just before the concert, stop by for Dessert in the Park at the Highgate Library social starting at 6:30 p.m. The social hour is a chance to visit with friends, plan your Fall reading, and eat some delicious desserts.
ST ALBANS BAY--St Albans Town and the All Arts Council bring the second Summer Sounds concert of the season to Franklin County's popular waterfront park on Sunday as the Vermont State Colleges present Amy Gallatin and Stillwaters.
"Stillwaters is a happy combination of country western, bluegrass, and folk," Amy Gallatin said. Her songs draw on long days working on ranches. She also sings pieces from songwriters such as Karla Bonoff and Richard Dobson.
Born in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Amy has organized horseback riding programs and was the featured entertainer at western guest ranches in places like Big Sky, Montana. She brands all of her music with soulful sincerity. Kevin Lynch, mandolin, guitar, and vocals, hosts a weekly bluegrass radio show on WWUH-FM. Roger Williams brings his resophonic guitar stylings as guest musician/instructor at the annual "Dobro Festival" in the Czech Republic. John Urbanik adds percussion string bass, and vocals.
Amy Gallatin and Stillwaters have taken the stage across the U.S., Mexico, and Europe. They appear regularly at First Night in Bennington, Danbury, and Hartford, have performed at the Bangor State Fair, and have toured Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Mexico and Switzerland. Her tape editing and mastering trip to Holland in April was a great success; their new CD, Live in Europe, is now available online.
Just before the concert, stop by for a Labor Day Bark in the Park at the Franklin County Humane Society social starting at 6:30 p.m. The social hour is a chance to make furry friends and eat some more delicious desserts.
The Summer Sounds concerts in Highgate are presented by the Town of Highgate, and the All Arts Council, and sponsored by Chevalier Drilling, Dexter Products, The Highgate Manor, O. C. McCuin & Sons, Ray's Extrusion Dies & Tubing, and The Tyler Place. The bonus series presented by St Albans Town and the AAC, and sponsored by a select group of Fairfax businesses, the Franklin business community, Richford businesses, the St Albans new car dealers, and Vermont State Colleges.
The rain sites are the Highgate United Methodist Church for the Zucchini Brothers and the Bay Park Pavilion/Bath House in St Albans Bay for Amy Gallatin. The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont.
Programming note: the postponed Burlington Ecumenical Gospel Choir concert will take place in September.
The Wild About Reading program concludes at the Enosburgh Public Library on Saturday at 9 a.m. with Trickster Tales: The Coyote. Provided by the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, this program is free and open to the public. WILD ABOUT READING
The Myllarit Karelian Folk Band returns to the Opera House at Enosburg Falls tomorrow evening. This concert is part of their third New England and Midwest concert tour in a Project Harmony music exchange between Vermont and Karelia. (Part I took place in April when Banjo Dan and the Midnite Plowboys played the Second Annual Folk Marathon World Music Festival in Petrozavodsk, Russia). Myllarit is a dynamic seven person, 16-instrument Karelian-Finnish vocal and instrumental folk band. MILLING AROUND THE OPERA HOUSE
The "Millers" from Petrozavodsk, Myllarit is a brisk vocal and instrumental group from the Republic of Karelia, Vermont's "Sister State" in northwestern Russia. Myllarit makes light-hearted, new age music based on traditional folk songs and tunes. They update the traditional pieces from the White Sea, Olonets and Ladoga regions, as well as the Trans-Onega region to fit their modern style. The show ranges from fun and good cheer to sentimental instrumentals and serious ballads. Myllarit's new CD, A Voi Voi, is available now.

Exit Stage Left Players will hold auditions for the fall production of Black Comedy tonight and tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. at the St. Albans City Elementary School. Black Comedy, a play by British playwright Peter Shaffer, the author of Eqqus. "It's a completely wacky play," said Peter Murray. THESPIAN ALERT

The classical summer concert series concludes with a performance by guitarist Peter Matthews on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at St John's Church in Highgate Falls. Peter, who lives in Sheldon and directs the music department at Richford High School, has performed in master classes for the Assad Duo and Nicholas Goluses, and has taught at the University of Arizona. He is also a popular performer in the Summer at Grace series. The concert is preceded by an Episcopal Evensong service at 3 p.m. Donations SUMMER MINISTRY OF THE ARTS
The Ambrose Baroque Trio originally scheduled for this event cannot perform because the modern flute will not accommodate the historical tuning of St. John's organ.

Heather Streeter of Swanton began a new job this week as Employer Resource Consultant for the Vermont Department of Employment and Training. "I read my job manual the first day," she said. "It covers all the laws, sexual harassment policies, and all the state policies, and more." Admirers sent two plants and two bouquets to her new office Monday. "I will be getting back out into the business community to meet with all the Franklin and Grand Isle employers to see what they need from me," she said.
CURRENTLY READING: "I've had the 'Seven Habits of Highly Effective People' by Stephen Covey for quite a while," she said. "I also read one poem a night from 'Thoreau: On Man and Nature' [by Henry David Thoreau]. And Glamour and Cosmo for the no brainer days."
VERMONT AUTHOR: Midwives by Chris Bohjalian. Lifetime made it into a movie "so I watched that, too. The dish is the worse thing because I don't read as much."
RE-READ: "Of 'Mice and Men' [by John Steinbeck] is my favorite book. I read it way back in high school and it has stayed with me. I went on a kick where I bought all the classics to read them when I didn't have to."
FAVORITE KIDS' BOOK: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. "I still have my original copy from when I was a kid."
