It is difficult to be curmudgeonly when the sun is reflecting so brightly off a fresh new cover of Vermont's "white gold." CONCERT FOR GRUMPY GROWNUPS
Be that as it may, the AAC Concerts for Grumpy Grownups Series continues Monday, January 13, with bassoonist Ben Hoadley in concert at the First Congregational Church in St. Albans.
Mr. Hoadley will play Mozart's Concerto in B-Flat Major (the first movement), the C. M. von Weber Concerto in F Major, second and third movements, four songs from Villa-Lobos, Rimsky-Korsakov, Flight of the Bumblebee, and the Tansman Suite. His performance combines the music with engaging and compelling commentary, for a personal understanding of both the music and the performer.
A New Zealand native, Ben Hoadley is principal bassoonist of the Hartford Symphony and Opera Connecticut. He won the top prize at the Gisborne International Solo Competition and the National Concerto Competition. He has performed throughout Australia and New Zealand as a soloist and chamber musician including a performance as a soloist with the Auckland Philharmonia at Symphony Under the Stars for an audience of 300,000. He is currently studying in the Artist Diploma program at New England Conservatory.
Mr. Hoadley will also hold school residencies Monday and Tuesday at St Albans City School and St Albans Town Educational Center.
This will be "an exposition of the bassoon," said Pat Evans at SATEC. "Seldom do people get this close to the instrument to see it and hear it intimately and even to learn why it still exists. Hearing a real professional producing high quality music and enjoying it is a real boon." Mr. Hoadley will work with grades 5-8.
The Concerts for Grumpy Grownups series is sponsored by the All Arts Council with the ongoing support of the St Albans Messenger. The Ben Hoadley concert and workshops are presented by the AAC in collaboration with the First Congregational Church, the St Albans City School, SATEC, and the Piatigorsky Foundation.
Admission is free. "One of the things this church tries to do is not charge admission to the sanctuary," Pastor Mark Kennedy said. Donations will be accepted to fund ongoing programs like this one. Monday is a school night, so the concert will begin at 7 p.m. This performance is one of a series of events celebrating the First Congregational Church's bicentennial.
The Piatigorsky Foundation is celebrating its twelfth year integrating live performances of classical music in the everyday life of communities across the country. The concerts often take place in areas where residents would not have access to these classical artists. Local volunteers are involved with the presentation of these concerts. This performance is one of the 150 concerts the Foundation will perform across the country this year. Piatigorsky Foundation concerts take place wherever people gather, in churches, libraries, museums, retirement communities, schools, synagogues, theaters, and workplaces.
ENOSBURG FALLS, VERMONT--The newly organized theater troupe Proscenium Players will hold auditions for its first round of productions in 2003. CALLS FOR ACTORS
"We need three male and two female performers for adult roles in 'Double Play'," said Director Tim Stetson of Enosburg. Double Play is two one-acts: Amelia Earhart Was Not a Spy and Another Labor Day by Award-Winning Canadian Playwright Colleen Curran.
"She puts a comedic twist to ordinary stories," said producer Tim Stetson.
Auditions will be held at 7-9 p.m. Friday evening and again at 10 a.m.-Noon on Saturday in the Opera House at Enosburg Falls.
Amelia Earhart Was Not A Spy is a comedy that follows a segment of the lives of two people, Hilary and Kevin, her homosexual roommate. They have been living together for five years, but on the evening of the play, Hilary has invited someone her new fiance to dinner. This true-to-life story unfolds with a grand and funny undertone.
Another Labor Day is a comedic drama that shares the lives of another young couple, Ben and Louise, who meet, marry and come to terms with Ben's infidelity over the course of fifteen sequential Labor Days at their summer cottage.
"These two shows should be great fun to act in," Mr. Stetson said. "I know I am really looking forward to directing the shows and something else that makes it even more fun is that playwright Colleen Curran summers in Highgate Springs, has performed at the Opera House, and is a good friend, all making for a great spring season of theater. "
The shows will be presented in May at the Opera House at Enosburg Falls, the Hardwick Town House, and the Little White Church in Highgate Springs.

ST ALBANS--Exit Stage Players meets this evening at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Albans City School to plan their Spring show.
It will "probably a comedy that may, or may not be, well-known," director Matt Peck said. They also want to put on a musical for the Summer/Fall season.
Exit Stage Players is one of the community's largest, and most active theater groups. They "plan to keep soldiering on with new and interesting shows," Mr. Peck said, and invite the community to join in for auditions, stage crew, or in the audience. ST ALBANS--The Ithaca Men's Chorus, conducted by Brian Messier from Georgia, will perform at BFA-St. Albans Theater next Thursday, January 16, at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students of any age. Will Patton has released Peripherique, a new CD featuring gypsy jazz and Brasilian tunes. The Will Patton Quintet and the Fabulous Spiders will host a CD release party in the FlynnSpace on Wednesday, January 15, at 7:30 p.m. Admission is "a modest $5 at the door to offset expenses," he said. "Peripherique," featuring gypsy jazz and Brasilian tunes and features the Will Patton Quintet with Mr. Patton on mandolin and other stringed stuff; David Gusakov, violin; Tom Steele, flute and clarinet; Clyde Stats, string bass; Steve Blair; guitar; and Steve Wienert, percussion. The album includes cuts Mr. Patton recorded in Paris with gypsy guitarist Ninine Garcia. He is also a popular jazz bass player and session mandolinist in Vermont and has recently traveled to New York, Paris, California and Grenada for gigs and recordings dates.

The National Stereoscopic Association was founded in 1974. It and the Oliver Wendell Holmes Stereoscopic Research Library in Cincinnati house more than 20,000 3-D images, related books and periodicals, and 3-D equipment. This stereoscopy site "puts advice and information at hobbyists' fingertips."
