Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons, at the Kept Writer in St Albans most Friday and Saturday evenings, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.
Ready for a Summer Sounds Surprise? Ray's Extrusion Dies and Tubing presents Mark LeGrand and his Lovesick Band in the Vermont Maple Festival/Summer Sounds series concert in Highgate Municipal Park on Sunday evening. This American Roots singer-songwriter will surprise us all. SURPRISE
Mark LeGrand has a repertoire of contemporary original songs drawn on traditional themes. The Lovesick Band is Sarah Munro, vocals, Dan Haley, guitar and vocals, Matt Caminsky, bass, Kevin Morrison, drums, and Mr. LeGrand on guitar and vocals. Influenced by Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson, his work offers a refreshing blend of originality, authenticity and style.
The Appalachian mountains are home to a variety of popular musical genres including roots, bluegrass, country, folk, and old-timey. Mr. LeGrand has incorporated these styles into his own brand of music. In 2002 he received the Onion River Arts Council Great Performances Award in recognition of dedicated leadership and outstanding artistic contributions to promote the arts and enhance the quality of life in Central Vermont. His CD All Dressed Up, made the 2002 top ten list in both the Burlington Free Press and Seven Days. The critically acclaimed Mischievous Angel and All Dressed Up enjoy air play in Holland, Ireland, Australia. South America, Canada, and in this country. He lives and makes music in Montpelier.
Just before the concert, stop by for Dessert in the Park at the Highgate Historical Society Summer Sounds social starting at 6:30 p.m. The social hour is a chance to visit with friends, enjoy tall tales of Highgate, and to eat finger foods and mapley delights.
The Vermont Maple Festival presents the Summer Sounds concerts in Highgate to keep music and maple together all year round. The concerts are sponsored by the Town of Highgate, and the All Arts Council, and underwritten by Chevalier Drilling, The Highgate Manor, O. C. McCuin & Sons, Ray's Extrusion Dies & Tubing, and The Tyler Place. The rain sites is the Highgate United Methodist Church. The concerts are always on Sunday evenings at 7 p.m., always in a town park, and always free. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair and maybe an umbrella as you settle in to enjoy outdoor family music and festivities. The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont.
PERFORMERS NEEDED--Often when I look for bands to present, I rely on the bands themselves to advertise themselves. That doesn't always work. This week's Summer Sounds concert came about because the Kept Writer's Jedd Kettler recommended Mark LeGrand. I am always looking for bands. Our summer concerts feature groups from all around the country; the local festivals spotlight talent living right here in Franklin County. If you know or have heard someone play and you liked them, email the All Arts Council to pass their name along. 2- AND 3-D ARTISTS NEEDED--The AAC and the Parkside Diner will present Art in the Park, a one day event with fine art, poetry, and music next Saturday, July 19, in the Downtown Park in Swanton. Exhibition space is free for local artists. Email the All Arts Council to reserve a space or to arrange to read. CALL FOR ARTISTS, I & II
The Desmond-Fish Library in Garrison, New York, serves the Hudson Highlands area with more than 27,000 books and an extensive electronic media collection. The library has a large collection of books and slides on the Hudson River School of paintings; over 1,000 images are online and some can be viewed as a slide-show. This index contains those images which the library has obtained permission to display under the fair use doctrine. The Hudson River Reference Collection is searchable by artist or painting. It ranges from G. L. Brown, View On The Hudson, to T. W. Whittredge, New York Landscape and includes 34 Frederic Church oils including Five Studies of Autumn Landscape, Possibly Vermont, from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
