Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at ChowBella in St Albans 8-10 p.m. most Wednesday evenings, at the Kept Writer in St Albans most Friday and Saturday evenings, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.
The Opera House at Enosburg Falls presents The Green Mountain Horn Club on Saturday in the Opera House Mentors Series. Led by Alan Parshley of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, this group of a dozen (French) Horns brings music from across time to the Opera House stage. The massed horns of this unique Vermont ensemble will play hunting horn music, selections from the movie Titanic, and more. CORNUCOPIA
The Horn Club will offer two movements by Mendelssohn (but no Mozart) and a group of hunting themes from operas by Berlioz, Gounod, Massenet, and Offenbach. "The horn has a long association with the hunt and the outdoors," Mr. Parshley said. "We're going to be taking advantage of the space to do some offstage and some answering back and forth with the horns."
They will play the Sousa Black Horse Troop March and an arrangement of Jupiter from The Planets by Holzt. The classical literature embraces folk music so the concert also includes a set of three folk songs, Sara Sponda, the English A' Roving, and the French Apres mi la Blonde. I believe there is no truth to the rumor that the horn club will experiment with Elevator Music for Four Horns; there is, however, an elevator in the Opera House ...
Formed in 1984, the Green Mountain Horn Club features players of all ages and musical backgrounds. "We have a lot of great horn players in Vermont," Mr. Parshley said. They pool their performance income to sponsor educational programs, recitals, and workshops of interest to horn players in the wider musical community. "There is a huge body of literature for horns."
The ensemble for Saturday's concert will feature horn players from all over the state: Hank Babcock, Northfield, James Barickman, Burlington, Trevor Bergeron, Essex Junction, Ruth Bill, St. George, Dale Camara, Peachum, VYO alumnus Ian Campbell now lives in Colchester but grew up in Georgia, Kelly Daige, Eden, Priscilla Douglas, Burlington, Mia Fritze, Burlington, Thea Martin, North Pomfret, Susan O'Daniel, Vergennes, Alan Parshley, Burlington, and Carolyn Tatlock, North Ferrisburg.
Alan Parshley has been a member of the horn sections of the Vermont, Albany, and Berkshire Symphony Orchestras and, as a member of the Vermont Brass Quintet and the VSO Brass Trio, actively tours this state for concerts and school appearances. He is a private teacher of the horn and is affiliated with UVM and Middlebury College. He also appeared with Phish for their 1995 Halloween Concert in Chicago.
The Green Mountain Horn Club appears Saturday only at 8 p.m. at the Opera House at Enosburg Falls. The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) administered the World Trade Center Site Memorial Competition. The Visual Display of Quantitative Information by Edward R. Tufte. "Everyone should read this book before touching Data Processing," she said. She meant to bring the set (Envisioning Information and Visual Explanations) for me to read, but, "with my suitcase weighing 14 pounds empty and these being hardbacks, I changed my mind. OK, I forgot."
