Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at ChowBella in St Albans 8-10 p.m. most Wednesday evenings, at the Kept Writer in St Albans mostly once each month, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.
The All Arts Council and the Peoples Trust Company present the Vermont Mozart Festival in its first Franklin County appearance tonight only in the E. A. Loomis Memorial Bandstand in Taylor Park. This special presentation is the only free outdoor concert in the 2004 Mozart Festival lineup. MUSIC IN THE PARK #1:
MOZART IS HERE
The St. Albans concert will feature the Ysaye Quartet in a program of the Beethoven Quartet in F minor, Op. 95, Franck String Quartet, and the Haydn Quartet in C major, Op. 54, No. 2.
The Ysaye Quartet is Guillaume Sutre, violin, Luc-Marie Aguera, violin, Miguel Da Silva, viola, and Francois Salque, cello. They will hold a special pre-performance discussion in the First Congregational Church at 6 p.m.
A graduate of the Paris Conservatory, Guillaume Sutre has appeared as soloist with Menuhin and Dutoit in Paris and Berlin, in recital at Wigmore Hall in London, at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, and in Salzburg and Geneva, and has toured South America, Africa and Southeast Asia as a soloist and chamber musician.
Luc-Marie Aguera studied at the Conservatories of Rouen and Paris and is a founding member of the Ysaye Quartet.
Miguel Da Silva also studied at the Paris Conservatory. He was a member of the Paris Opera Orchestra and is a full time member of the Quartet.
Francois Salque is an active soloist and recording artist; he has performed with the Munich Radio Orchestra, the Suisse Romande and Monte Carlo Orchestras and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and has toured more than 20 countries.
The Quartet has made eight world tours, appearing in Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, and in Hong Kong, China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Central America, Israel and throughout Europe. Their current season includes appearances at the Amadeus Festival in Geneva, at Wigmore Hall in London, at the Cite de la Musique and Theatre de la Ville in Paris, and concerts in Istanbul, St. Petersburg, Bilbao and Lisbon. They have recorded on the Harmonia Mundi, Philips and Decca labels, including, for Decca, the complete works for string quartet by Mendelssohn, and the piano quartets and quintets by Fuare with their compatriot Pascal Roge. The members of the Quartet are on the faculty of the Conservatoire Superieur de Musique de Paris.
Chow Bella! will host the evening with delicious delectables before the concert and during intermission.
The Mozart Festival presents a series of concerts performed by orchestras, chamber orchestras, ensembles, and exceptional soloists. The Festival continues through Sunday.
Presented by the All Arts Council, this Vermont Mozart Festival concert is sponsored by the Peoples Trust Company with the generous assistance of Channel 15, the County Courier, St. Albans for the Future (the St. Albans Downtown Committee), and the St. Albans Messenger.
Admission is free. The rain site is the First Congregational Church, 27 Church Street, in St Albans.
Highgate Municipal Park will soothe your soul as Chevalier Drilling presents Soul Purpose with Evelyn Kwaanza in the Vermont Maple Festival/Summer Sounds concert series on Sunday evening. They will sing the soul music of the sixties and seventies, "a little bit of Motown, a little funk, a little Stevie Wonder, and a little Tina Turner. We like to sing," Ms. Kwaanza said. MUSIC IN THE PARK #2: ROCK THAT SOUL
Soul Purpose is a new, six-piece band made up of experienced musicians. The band includes David Ellenbogen, keyboards, Steve Goldman, lead guitar and vocals, Danielle Trasciatti, sax and background vocals, Tim Voight, drums, Brian Wichert, bass, and BFA's former Choral Director Evelyn Kwaanza, lead vocals.
"Tim really pulled the group together," Ms. Kwaanza said. "He is into doing the soul music that isn't performed around here. Tim, Steve, and Brian had gigged together. They looked for a keyboard and needed a horn" and a new group was born. This is a group with a lot of work experience, although they are just beginning to work together.
The Sunday concert will include It's Your Thing, Tina Turner songs such as Rock Me Baby, blues pieces, Tracy Chapman's Give Me a Reason to Love You, Stevie Wonder's Superstition and much more.
"We are also planning to do more gospel this year," she said.
The Vermont Maple Festival presents the Summer Sounds concerts in Highgate to keep music and maple together all year round. The concerts are sponsored by the Town of Highgate, and the All Arts Council, and underwritten by Chevalier Drilling, O. C. McCuin & Sons, Ray's Extrusion Dies & Tubing, Roy's Housing/Your Vermont Home, and the Tyler Place. The rain site is the Highgate United Methodist Church. Summer Sounds concerts are always on Sunday evenings at 7 p.m., always in a town park, and always free. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair and maybe an umbrella as you settle in to enjoy outdoor family music and festivities. The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont.
Franklin County Caring Communities and YAC present a summer Funfest for teens at Lake Carmi on Saturday from 1-6 p.m. MUSIC IN THE PARK #3: FUNFEST
"We have fewer workshops and more fun in the summer," Beth Crane said. The event will feature music with DJ Chad Ste. Marie plus food, games, and activities for 13-18 year olds.
"There is transportation from all the teen centers in the four corners of the county," she said. Buses will leave Richford Teen Center, Bakersfield Teen Center, Swanton Teen Center, St. Albans Teen Center and Enosburg Elementary School at about noon. Admission is $1.80/person thanks to a State Park group rate.
