Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at ChowBella or at the Overtime Saloon in St Albans 8-10 p.m. most Wednesday evenings, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.
Grace Church in Sheldon presents the third annual Farewell Reunion Concert tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. in the opening event of the 2005 Summer Music at Grace series. The concert will feature traditional and original music, with singing and dancing from Vermont, Appalachia, Scotland, Ireland and beyond. FAREWELL REUNION
"This is an all acoustic concert," host and organizer Mark Sustic said. Sheldon "is a beautiful place to be on a spring evening in Vermont, and its going to be a fun night. I'm sure you'll find something that will make you want to sing, clap, tap, smile and maybe even laugh right out loud!"
The lineup of Vermont musicians and dancers includes Michele and Fabe Choiniere, Gary Dulabaum, the Fiddleheads, the Foothills Fogies (Gerry Faulkenberg, Dave Hoke, Ed Paquin and others), Franklin Heyburn and Michele Lajoie, storytellers and Celtic musicians Tim Jennings and Leanne Ponder, Jim McGinnis, Northern Routes (the folk group of Mark Sustic, Tom MacKenzie, David Carpenter, and Tom Hodgson), Will Patton and Dono Schabner, Rachel Schattman, the Sweet Corn Broadcasters, master old-time Vermont fiddler Ron West, and a dance with all available fiddlers and dance musicians.
The concert lets all the performers visit with old friends in a beautiful setting for a good cause. "it takes place in my home county of Franklin - how cool is that?" asked Will Patton. He has "been playing a lot with Dono Schabner, a terrific guitarist equally adept at gypsy jazz and Brasilian music, my main loves."
"Sweet Corn Broadcasters is a group that hasn't played in probably twenty years," Mr. Sustic said. "Three of the original members will have a reunion for this concert."
"It must be ten or fifteen years since Frank and Tom and I all played together at the same time," Tim Jennings said. "Corn Again!"
The reunion concert has become an annual event to raise money for the Tom Sustic Scholarship Fund. "It's great to have so many folks enthused about being part of it," Mr. Sustic said.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be available. A suggested donation of $10/person will benefit the Tom Sustic Scholarship Fund, awarded annually to a graduating senior intending to become a teacher of young children.

The Tom Sustic Scholarship Fund gives $1,000 to a graduating senior from one of the five high schools once each year. "This year we gave the third one, Mark Sustic said. "Tom had decided he wanted to be a teacher of kids, so it is to support kids who have decided to go to college to do that." The Reunion Concert offers great music, songs, and tales to fill the evening and to start young people on their way.
"This is in addition to the other Tom Fund. This is specific to Franklin County. All the other events are related to supporting families with kids at the hospital. He had a hope, a plan to be a teacher."
The 2005 recipient is BFA-St Albans senior Haley Laidman.
Ms. Laidman will attend Johnson State College in the fall, majoring in Elementary Education. "I've always liked spending time with kids," she said. "I feel that education is the most important thing you can have in the world." She acts, danced at school, and likes the reputation and atmosphere at JSC.
The scholarship application requires a written essay and good recommendations. "I worked really hard on my essay but I like to write."

VERMONT HAND CRAFTERS SUMMER JURY (May 27)--VHC wants for Vermont artisans for the oldest and largest juried craft organization in the state. ETHNIC FESTIVAL and ANNUAL SIDEWALK SALES (May 31)--The Downtown Rutland Ethnic Festival focuses on celebrating the diverse heritages and cultural backgrounds. They seek multi-ethnic entertainers, crafters, and food vendors with a worldwide variety of cuisines for the all day event held Saturday, July 30 in Downtown Rutland. 2005 FINELINE COMPETITION (June 1)--Dream big at the Bowling Green State University. The Mid-American Review juried prose and prose-poetry competition seeks unpublished entries under 500 words for a $1000 prize and publication. Entry fee. Click here for more info.
INTERNATIONAL JURIED WATERMEDIA EXHIBITION (June 6)--Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art wants entries of watermedia on paper for an annual fall exhibition in Loretto, PA. $5,300 in cash and $2,500 in material awards. NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION (June 17)--The Camera Club of New York juried competition is open to all US residents over 18. Entry fee. The chosen artist will receive a one-person exhibition in the Alfred Lowenherz Gallery and a cash award of $300.00. Other finalists will participate in a group show.
