ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column. STUFF YOU SHOULDN'T MISS
Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at ChowBella or at the Overtime Saloon in St Albans 8-10 p.m. most Wednesday evenings, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.
Vermont's fourteenth annual Open Studio Weekend begins Saturday at 10 a.m. This statewide celebration puts Vermont artists and craftspeople "on exhibit" in their own studios. The event begins the summer season during Memorial Day Weekend each year. PALETTE POPPING OPEN STUDIO
Some of the artists open their working studios to the public only during this weekend. It is an opportunity for them to talk about their work and to demonstrate the skill and processes used to make it. The participating artists plan to get work done as well as teach while visitors poke around.
The World's Largest Palette will anchor the All Arts Council/St Albans for the Future Open Studio exhibit in Taylor Park on Saturday only. More than 500 people helped paint the community side of the giant palette at the Maple Festival.
The Open Studio outdoor exhibit in Taylor Park will also include many of the Palettes of Franklin County, Vermont. The Vermont Arts Council will bring a cargo of creative activities and a selection of statewide palettes to Taylor Park on Saturday as well. Area artists who have painted palettes for the statewide event will exhibit and demonstrate. The exhibit will be open from 10-5.
The World's Largest Palette will also participate in the Memorial Day parade on Monday.
Hundreds of other sites will be open with more than three hundred artists and artisans participating this year including these spaces in and around Franklin County:
Marie Baron's Cottonwood Quilts, Montgomery, represents thirty-four local artisans, year-round.
David Derner splits his time between copper and steel sculptures and landscape paintings in Windy Hollow Studio. Mr. Derner will also host Josh Derner, landscape paintings, of Fairfax, and Dennis Provencher, Architectural iron, of Milton VT
Kevin Hankey's Daymoon Art Center and Retreat, Montgomery. Paintings, ceramics, photography, glass, fiber arts.
Lorraine C. Manley, Milton. Colorful oil and acrylic, impressionist paintings.
Alan Stirt Woodturner, Enosburg Falls. Turned wood bowls and platters.
Meta Strick's Get Away With Art, Sheldon. Carved, painted, wood figures, ornaments.
Shanley Triggs' Vermont H'Art, Milton. Watercolors of teacups, florals, Vermont subjects.
Ralph Tursini Woodturning and Bowl Works, Cambridge. Unique green-turned wooden bowls.
Valerie M. Ugro, Fairfax. Watercolor and acrylic landscape paintings of Vermont and British Colombia plus stained Glass sculpture and demonstrations.
Anna Vreman, Milton. Vermont inspired, contemporary landscape paintings.
Karen Winslow Art Studio, Jeffersonville. Oil paintings, etchings, pastels, watercolors.
Other statewide participants include furniture makers, glass blowers, ironworkers, jewelers, quilters painters, potters, printmakers, sculptors, weavers, and wood carvers. Many galleries will host gallery talks and feature special exhibits in conjunction with this event.
Directions to the area studios are in the sidebar but there is an easy way to find east artists. Get somewhere near each studio and "follow the yellow signs," Ms. Ugro said.
The World's Largest Palette is sponsored by the Peoples Trust Company, Sticks and Stuff, and R. L. Fournier. It is a project of the All Arts Council and St Albans for the Future. The statewide Palettes of Vermont is sponsored by Chittenden Bank, Vermont Wood Manufacturers Association, Casella Waste Systems, and NRG Systems with promotional support from the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing. Chow Bella presents Will Patton and Michael Hurley with Rounder recording artist, the sound of HBO's Deadwood, general sage and mystery man Crispo at 7:30 or so, on Saturday evening. CRISPY CHOW

The 50th Annual Vermont Dairy Festival runs officially from Thursday, June 1, through June 4 in Enosburg Falls. The Festival live entertainment begins this Tuesday evening with the Vermont Dairy Festival Scholarship Pageant at the Opera House at Enosburg Falls. PAGEANT
The Vermont Dairy Festival Scholarship Pageant is held across two days with the speech contest on Tuesday, followed by the talent competition next Thursday, June 1. The Enosburg Lions offer scholarship prizes for contestants ranging from $125 to $750
"We have twelve girls this year," organizer Lise Gates said.

The BFA-St. Albans Music Department will present a choral concert to support Franklin Grand Isle Emergency Food Shelf next Thursday, June 1, at the First Congregational Church. The performance will feature several vocal ensembles including the 130 member mixed chorus. SWANTON--In Grandparents & Grandchildren, "Stories On Board," grandparent mentors will work with grandchildren to develop stories and put them on paper and finally wooden palettes for the Palettes of Vermont project. All supplies are included in the free class. Classes will be held Saturdays 10 a.m.-12 noon, June 17 - July 22, at the Swanton Senior Center. Class size is limited to 24.
The finished palettes will be included with a traveling art show for Franklin County and finally in Montpelier.

The second annual Vermont Cultural Heritage Tourism Month begins Saturday and runs through July 4. This month-long collection of events will explore Vermont's people, history, artistry, inventiveness, community, and humor. In addition to the Open Studio weekend, the Vermont Cultural Heritage Month will feature about 1,000 events including the signature events Vermont Days and the Vermont History Expo. Vermont is home to a greater percentage of artisans and inventors than anywhere else in the U.S., according to the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing. CULTURAL HERITAGE MONTH
Cultural Heritage Month will celebrate all types of music, visual art, theater, concerts, and food. Open Studio Weekend begins the month-long exploration but, wait, there's more! The month of June also includes the kick off of two other major festivals in Franklin County, the Vermont Dairy Festival and the Summer Sounds Concert Series.
