ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column. STUFF YOU SHOULDN'T MISS
Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at ChowBella or at the Overtime Saloon in St Albans 8-10 p.m. most Wednesday evenings, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.
This is the big art weekend of the season in St. Albans.
Taylor Park will teem with music, fun activities, displays, and other sources of entertainment and information at Celebrate St. Albans on Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Listen to the music. See some of the fine art by area artists. Check out the police cruisers, fire trucks and other vehicles on display. Enjoy the craft tables. Stroll around Downtown. Celebrate St. Albans will be a good time for everyone young and old. There are three major art exhibits and a lineup of musical performances. CELEBRATE ST. ALBANS
Art exhibits include the Bishop Street Artists' fifth annual Fine Arts Exhibit and Sale at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, the third annual St. Albans Historic Museum exhibition of fine art in all media at the parish hall, and an exhibit of the Palettes of Franklin County, Vermont, in Taylor Park as well as in store around the Downtown. The new St. Albans Artist's Guild will have a booth. Chain saw artist Marvin Chamberlin of Marvin's Carvin's will transform a tree into a permanent statue. And the World's Largest Palette will wander around Taylor Park.
And there will be music! Listen to Clem Yonkers, farm, Jacques Boudreau, Chris Dizzy, and Jesse Potts through the day.
This fun Saturday event gives local organizations the Taylor Park venue to gather and show the community who they are and what they contribute. The Park will host volunteer groups, community organizations, police and City/Town fire departments, church groups, the national guard, school children, and more.

BISHOP STREET--The Bishop Street Artists' fifth annual Fine Arts Exhibit and Sale begins tomorrow evening with a Meet the Artists reception 6-8 pm at St. Luke's Parish Hall in St. Albans. The reception will also feature the unveiling of the three beautiful pieces of stained glass donated to the church by Mike Gonyo. ART ON THE WALLS
The show features both works for sale and pieces on exhibit only. More than 25 local and regional artists are participating. The exhibitors include Norma Bard, Eric Bataille, Jane Bower, Pat Burton, Mary Ellen Bushey, Betty Casavant, Louise Counos, Kimberley Forney, Bonnie Gillespie, Barbara Hamm, April Henderson, Jill Jones, Ardyce Klete, Dorothy Lear, Beth Maginn, Gladys Nokes, Jud Pealer, Sandra Pealer, Byran Powers, Frank Tirella Jr., Stanley Triggs, Doug Underwood, Karen Vath, Deb Wilkenson, and Linda Wirts.
The Bishop Street Artists meet Thursdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at St. Luke's Parish Hall.
The show continues Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday, 9 a.m.-noon. it is co-sponsored by St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the Franklin County Regional Chamber of Commerce.
MUSEUM--The third annual St. Albans Historic Museum exhibition of fine art begins with an opening reception tomorrow and continues through September 29. The exhibit includes fine art in all media.
An opening reception for the exhibit will be held tomorrow evening 6- 8 p.m. at the museum. The public is cordially invited to attend.
The St. Albans Museum is located on Church Street overlooking Taylor Park. The art show will be open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday for Celebrate St. Albans. Regular hours are 1-4 pm daily or by appointment. The museum exhibit is sponsored in part by Champlain Collection and Rail City Market.
PALETTES--About 20 12"x16" Palettes of Franklin County, Vermont will be on display in Taylor Park near the one 12'x16' World's Largest Palette. Additional traditional-sized palettes are on exhibit in stores throughout Downtown.
The World's Largest Palette is sponsored by the Peoples Trust Company, Rene J. Fournier Farm Equipment, Sticks and Stuff, and Union Bank. The Palettes of Franklin County, Vermont are a project of the All Arts Council and St Albans for the Future with considerable assistance from community partners including BFA-St. Albans, Rene J. Fournier Farm Equipment, Franklin County Regional Chamber of Commerce, New England Central Railroad, People's Trust Company, the St. Albans Historical Museum, Sticks & Stuff, and Union Bank.
Celebrate St. Albans also kicks off the final chapter of the Palettes of Franklin County, Vermont project. THE PALETTES ARE COMING!
In Franklin County, the All Arts Council and St. Albans for the Future will host a Palette Auction at the St. Albans Historical Society on Saturday, October 7.
Palettes of Vermont has united communities and individual Vermonters through the arts since January. The Franklin County palettes use many media -- paint, pastels, paper, ink, fabric, leather, photography, and more. The project began at the Maple Festival and continues through October.
Palettes of Vermont was conceived by Brandon folk artist Warren Kimble as a project open to all Vermonters. Artists in most communities around the state have donated their finished works to arts and other community organizations to help fund arts and cultural projects.
The newest Palettes of Franklin County will go on display at City Hall and around St Albans starting on Monday. You will be able to bid on all displayed pieces in a silent auction; the advance bids will be the opening bids at the closing event on October 7. Bid early and bid high. You might be able to "close out" other bidders.
Vermont’s National Ballroom Dance Week for 2006 begins with USAdance events and a Camp Ta-Kum-Ta benefit at the Elly Long Music Center at St. Michaels College in Colchester. JOY OF DANCING
Nearly 100 local partner dancers will perform in the third annual Camp Ta-Kum-Ta Benefit Partner Dance Showcase on Friday. The dancers will perform their favorite partner dances in both couples and group numbers; from Cha Cha to Viennese Waltz, during a benefit for Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, Vermonts’ camp for children who have, or have had, cancer.
The doors will open at 6:30 pm for the benefit dance showcase and the performances will begin at 7 p.m. A 30 minute dance lesson in Foxtrot will follow the performances. Open dancing continues until 10 p.m.

FERRISBURGH--The Friends of the Grange Hall and the Town Offices Committee present a community square dance at Charles & Deanna Shapiro’s barn on Saturday, 6:30 to 9 p.m. Caller Mark Sustic, with music by Pete & Karen Sutherland and Banjo Dan Lindner, will help raise the roof of the Ferrisburgh Grange Hall/Town Offices and Community Center. Donations will be accepted gratefully at the door. Desserts and beverages for sale but no alcoholic beverages at this family event.
SOUTH BURLINGTON--Events for Tom presents Dougie MacLean at Higher Ground on Sunday at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.)
Although he is written of as "Scotland’s best kept secret," Mr. MacLean is in fact one of Scotland’s foremost contemporary musicians. The international songwriter, composer, and performer has headlined at concerts and festivals throughout the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York.

COLCHESTER--The Vermont Youth Philharmonia Fall Concert with Anne Decker, conductor, and soloist Paul Brana, trumpet, will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Elley-Long Music Center at Saint Michael's College. ESSEX JUNCTION--The Lincoln Inn presents the Nobby Reed Project tonight at 7 p.m. The Project plays the best original music in the soul-shakin'-electric Texas and Chicago blues styles with a Vermont touch. The band includes Eric Belrose, percussion, Ray Bushey, bass, and Mr. Reed on lead guitar and vocals.

The Opera House at Enosburg Falls presents MetaMURPHosis, the rapid uncontrolled extravaganza of physical comedian Tom Murphy, next Friday, September 22, at 7:30 p.m. OPERA HOUSE SEASON STARTS
International performing artist Tom Murphy was chosen Number One Clown at France’s international circus competition and Artist of the Year for Kunstler Magazine. He has entertained audiences in every European country, Japan, Australia, South America, and in a sold-out Broadway run. The show is his loose, semi-autobiographical, impetuous journey into the world of MURPH, a selfless, self-conscious, Catholic-guilt-ridden, solo entertainer.
"I will entertain you; I must entertain you . . . at any cost!" said the Chaos Poet.
