Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at various restaurants around Franklin County throughout the week, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.

These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.
The headline act always closes the show. The 2007 Highgate summer concludes as the Tyler Place presents Tammy Fletcher and Mountain Girl in the Summer Sounds concert in Highgate Municipal Park on Sunday evening. There were no Summer Sounds concerts in St. Albans City in 2007. THE HEADLINER: TONE RULES
Tammy Fletcher is best-known as Vermont's Soul Queen but she has enthralled audiences from the Apollo Theater in Harlem to the Gaiety Theater in Dublin because she sings. My, oh my does she sing. She has sung in Reykjavik and Highgate. She has sold out the Flynn while fronting the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. She sang the National Anthem at Fenway. Deeply rooted in our American traditions, Ms. Fletcher sings gospel and rock, opera and country, and the blues. Tone rules whenever she does.
Mountain Girl is a raw to her roots Americana band. The band includes Ms. Fletcher on vocals; Dave Lovald on Guitar, Dakota Foley, Mandolin; Jim Pitman on Dobro/Steel; and Thom Carvey on Bass.
"We'll do rockin' bluegrassy country alternative folk," Ms. Fletcher said of the Summer Sounds event.
Just before the concert, stop by for Dessert in the Park at the Foster Grandparents social starting at 6:30 p.m. The social hour is a chance to visit with friends, and to eat finger foods and sweet delights.
The Summer Sounds concerts are sponsored by the Town of Highgate and the All Arts Council, and underwritten by Chevalier Drilling, Desorcie's Market, O. C. McCuin & Sons, Pete Paquette Real Estate & Development, Ray's Extrusion Dies & Tubing, Scotty's Taxi, Sticks & Stuff, and The Tyler Place. St Paul's Youth Group plans delicious desserts but no Mystic Pizza for the social.
The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont. The concerts are always on Sunday evenings at 7 p.m., always in Highgate Municipal Park, and always free. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair as you settle in to enjoy outdoor family music and festivities.
LUDLOW--Mark Sustic and Yankee Chank will perform at the Ludlow Town Park on Sunday at 7 p.m. The Vermont-based Cajun dance band performs traditional dance music from southwest Louisiana. Yankee Chank features fiddle, accordion, guitar, bass, and percussion, and specializes in the traditional two-steps and waltzes played in the dance halls and honky-tonks of Louisiana. They have played dances, festivals, concerts, parties, and weddings throughout New England since 1996. ON STAGE LIVE

CHORUS AUDITIONS (Call Now)--The Vermont Youth Orchestra Association will hold an extra series of auditions for student vocalists for the new VYO Chorus program on Saturday, September 8 at the Elley-Long Music Center at Saint Michael's College in Colchester. Jeff Buettner, the new Conductor of VYO Choruses, will hear all auditions. AUGUST-SEPTEMBER ART DEADLINES
Chorus auditions are open to students entering grades 8-12 in the fall. Prospective choristers should be able to read music, match pitch, and blend with other voices. The VYOA encourages students who actively participate in their school choral program (if one is offered) to apply. Auditions are by appointment only. Call 802.655.5030 for details.
FOURTH ANNUAL FINE ART EXHIBIT (Enter Now)--The Saint Albans Historical Museum seeks work in all media for annual fine art show in October. Artists living and working in Vermont are encouraged to contribute new or recent art. Work must be framed or otherwise ready to hang and there is a limit of 2 pieces per artist. Entry fee. WORDS WITHOUT VOICES (August 31)--The juried online album art competition seeks digital visual artwork to illustrate the titles of 25 songbook jackets and 125 album covers by lyricist James Thomas Fielding. It offers $6,000 in cash prizes. The Words Without Voices series combines art, music, language, and Internet technology, and will be aimed toward the youth market. Entry fee. CAMERAARTS SHOWCASE EDITION (September 4)--The Center for Fine Art Photography and CameraArts Magazine have partnered for a published exhibition of professional and amateur, domestic and international photographers working with digital or traditional photography. All subjects are eligible for this "open theme" showing. The Grand Prize recipient will receive an eight-page portfolio, plus the front cover of the 2007 November/December CameraArts issue. PAINT! (September 30)--South Shore Art Center seeks entries for a national juried exhibition to celebrate the diversity of paint. $1,200 in prizes. Entry fee. A successful art center in Cohasset, Massachusetts, SSAC was featured in this column in December. Village Square Booksellers of Bellows Falls hosts the "3rd Friday Art Walk," a stroll through the galleries, shops, and art venues of Bellows Falls and vicinity. The event combines art, music, and literature. They have frequent art openings, book readings, poetry, and musical entertainment. Art Walk participants serve light refreshments.
