STUFF YOU SHOULDN'T MISS

      ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column.


      Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at various restaurants around Franklin County throughout the week, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
     These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

ON STAGE LIVE

SOUTH BURLINGTON--The Events for Tom Series presents Greg Brown with Bo Ramsey in concert at Higher Ground on Friday at 7:30 p.m. This folk concert puts the spotlight on Mr. Brown's unique writing and his dirt and gravel road vocals. His concerts are personal and intimate.
      Mr. Brown made frequent performances on A Prairie Home Companion as a young performer in the 1980s. Since then he has received two Grammy nominations and has recorded more than two dozen albums. He has a long history of using his music to raise funds and awareness for environmental and social causes including the Breast Cancer Fund and the Tom Fund.
      Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson, Shawn Colvin, and Mary Chapin Carpenter cover Mr. Brown's songs. His Iowa Waltz was proposed to replace the state song of Iowa.

AROUND THE STATE--Vermont's professional vocal ensemble Counterpoint debuts Voyages this weekend in three performances. The concert will feature music from near and far including the singers' favorites from Europe and the Americas.
      The Vergennes Opera House presents Voyages tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $18 adults, $15 Seniors, $12 Students. Tickets are available through the Flynn Regional Box Office (802.86-FLYNN), Classic Stitching, or the Opera House (802.877.6737).
      The Universalist Church in Barre presents Voyages on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Barre Books and at the door.
      The inaugural concert of Counterpoint's three year Artists in Residence at Saint Michael's College will be held st the McCarthy Arts Center on Sunday at 4 p.m. Tickets are available through the Flynn Regional Box Office (802.86-FLYNN), or at the door.

BRATTLEBORO--Twilight Music presents Housetop, the quartet of Anna Patton, Naomi Morse, Erica Morse, and Peter Siegel, at the Hooker-Dunham Theater and Gallery tomorrow evening at 8 p.m.

CROPPIES--The end of October will be a big week for the American-Irish Band. Gather the Sunday Club as they return to RiRa on Sunday at 5 p.m. Then join the group to celebrate Halloween, that most Irish of holidays, at the Lincoln Inn on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Costumes are optional.


LIGHTS ON

     More than 7,500 sites across the country have the lights on after school this month to remind us that after-school programming is key to the success of our school children. Eight Franklin County programs have hosted events for the Eighth annual Lights On After-school celebration. Most involve the arts in one form or another.
      Three programs have open houses next Monday and Tuesday.
      On Monday, Crossroads hosts an Open House at the Missisquoi Valley Union Middle School in Swanton with demonstrations and light refreshments served. 4-5:30 p.m.
      The Open Doors after school and summer programs at City Elementary School and the St. Albans Town Educational Center both have Open Houses on Tuesday.
      City School will have the National Guard Obstacle Coarse as well as student displays and activity centers such as Beads, Scrap Booking, Drama, plus a music sing along and story time. 4 to 6 p.m.
      The SATEC program plans light bulb craft, a chance to learn a traditional German folkdance, as well as dodge ball, a pep rally, a game of German Bingo, and Halloween snacks and craft activities. Halloween costumes are welcome. 4 to 6 p.m.


OCTOBER-NOVEMBER ART DEADLINES

INTERNAL ILLUMINATION (October 31)--The juried exhibition is open to all two- and three-dimensional artwork that incorporates components of internal illumination, either by electrical or chemical means. Lighting in the display areas will be minimized to allow an accentuation of the glowing characteristics of the work. No work that involves fire or loose chemicals will be accepted. Entry fee. ELEVENTH ANNUAL OPEN JURIED EXHIBITION (November 16)--Currents at the Court Gallery of William Paterson University includes all media, including videos and installations, will be accepted. Cash awards. Entry fee. Click here for a prospectus.


BEAUTY-RELATED ART EXHIBITION (October 30)--Seeks works that contest the mass ideology of beauty and explore the connections between beauty and violence, the phobia of aging, issues of self-perception and the element of power inherent in an "ideal."
