STUFF YOU SHOULDN'T MISS

ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column.

Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at various restaurants around Franklin County throughout the week, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

Find links to these events and more in our Spotlight!

REVOLUTIONARY

Perhaps "resolutionary" would be a better title, but I like column heads that grab the reader. Using words like "naked" and "revolution" do that better.
Business slows down this time of year. We had a foot of snow in Highgate on Monday morning when I wrote this. It's a great excuse, but no one really wanted to go to work anyway. That means this week is the perfect time to think about your Resolutions.
You could resolve to buy more original art.
Or you could resolve to create more original art.
Or you could resolve to submit more original art.
(For "art," substitute choreography or music or any other form or media.)
This week we have a number of art deadlines that are looming closely. Take a break from shoveling and get your stuff ready to send out.
That really would be revolutionary, wouldn't it?

NEFA's NEW CREATIVE ECONOMY STUDY

New England Foundation for the Arts has published its latest creative economy study, The Creative Economy: A New Definition, online. The report builds on NEFA's 30-years of creative economy research. That analysis shows that New England's cultural organizations employ about 4% of the workforce, some 274,719 people.
Authors Douglas DeNatale and Gregory H. Wassall also propose a standard research methodology and core definition of New England's creative economy that could be employed throughout the U.S.

CLICK HERE: ART SITE OF THE WEEK

"Traveling around this great big, exciting, lush, bustling, wondrous, lavish, friendly, beautiful, intriguing, humorous, spiritual, generous, adaptive, dangerous, creative, sincere, simple, and ever changing world of ours had been on my life list of things to do since I can remember," photographer Greg Davis of Texas wrote. He started a one-year photographic World Tour in 2004. I'm not sure if he has really returned, but buyers can order prints directly from his site.
Like many other photographers, Mr. Davis uses smugmug.com to host, display, and sell his work. smugmug calls itself the "ultimate file sharing site" with no ads. The host provides proof-delayed shipping, backprinting, digital downloads, custom watermarks, prints up to 30" x 40", gifts, and HD video.
