BURLINGTON--Events for Tom presents Lisa Ornstein and Andre Marchand in a traditional concert in the Billings North Lounge at UVM on Sunday at 6 p.m. ON STAGE LIVE
Ms. Ornstein has studied fiddle with Burlington’s Louis Beaudoin, Tommy Jarrell, Louis Beaudreault, and Avila LeBlanc, and has done scholarly research in Quebec, New Brunswick, and the American south. M. Marchand's guitar and vocals have been the core of La Bottine Souriante and Les Charbonniers de l'Enfer.
Admission is by a suggested donation of $20 at the door. There are no advance ticket sales but Mark Sustic will take reservations by email.
The concert is a presentation of Events for Tom and the UVM Old Time Music Club with Champlain Valley Folk Festival, All the Traditions on Vermont Public Radio, and Champlain 400 Burlington International Waterfront Festival. Click here for more info.

SHELDON--Mark your calendars. The summer music season opens next Friday, May 29, as Summer Music at Grace kicks off with the Eighth Annual Farewell Reunion Concert. The Events for Tom concert is an evening of traditional and original music, singing and dancing from Vermont, Appalachia, Scotland, Ireland and beyond. The lineup will include Bread and Bones, Michele and Fabio Choiniere, Jim McGinniss, Keeghan Nolan, Will Patton, and many more.

Vermont is Number One. Numero Uno. Premiere. CREATIVE ECONOMY
The creative economy has trumped the recessionary economy. Forbes Magazine reported that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office received 495,000 patent applications last year. That's up 6% from 2007 and 11% from 2006. The applicants, Forbes notes, "range[d] from large corporations to at-home tinkers."
Vermonters received 514 patents in 2008.
The magazine ranked the 15 "most creative states" by number of patents granted per capita. With a population of 621,270, Vermont ranks 49th among the states and territories.
Vermont and Idaho garnered number one and two honors respectively thanks to IBM at home and Micron Technology in Idaho. IBM took home 282 patents for Vermont, more than half the total granted to Vermonters. Micron landed 828 patents for Idaho, about two-thirds of the total that state won.
Forbes used data generated by patent attorney David Rogers of Phoenix, author of Business Success Through Innovation.
The creative economy has another card to play in times of recession: Employment unrest and R.I.F.s typically leads to a spike of individual inventors and creative small businesses which can craft a nice trickle into the rest of the economy of the state.
Creativity pays.
The Vermont Council on Rural Development (VCRD) released its final report, Imagining Vermont: Values and Vision for the Future, the findings of the recent statewide conversation on the values, goals, and priorities of Vermonters last month. Click here for your copy.

OUTDOOR SCULPTURE (May 29)--Lexington Art League will stage an exhibition of outdoor sculpture on the front lawn of the Gothic Revival Loudoun House in Kentucky. All three-dimensional media will be considered. Artists are responsible for installation and removal. No entry fee.

FRIENDLY FIRE (May 29)--The juried Ceramics Celebrating the Diversity in Clay is open to all ceramics artists, working in functional, non-functional and sculptural. Some awards. Non-refundable entry fee.

ANNUAL NATIONAL JURIED EXHIBITION (June 1)--The Art Institute and Gallery show in Salisbury, MD, is open to all United States artists over 18. They want 2D and 3D works. Awards include cash and a 2010 AI&G Foyer Gallery Solo Exhibit.

CALL FOR STAGE PLAYS--Warning: Repertorio Espanol wants unproduced full length stage plays that are relevant and unique to the Hispanic experience in the United States.
Although the "winning play" will be produced at Repertorio Espanol and the top five will receive cash awards, this call demands an entry fee. That expectation violates the credo that "Money Flows TO the Writer." Legitimate publishers and producers alike pay for the work they sell and do not charge reading or other fees. Beware. Run very fast from those who would charge.
Paul Engstrom Fine Art is a commercial gallery in Grosse Point, Michigan, where the diminishing auto market may very well be hammering art sales as well. His site has his exhibits, the artists represented, info about the gallery, a blog, and more. The light gray text on a white background makes for a difficult site to navigate. Mr. Engstrom issued a recent call for entries for landscape photographs with the statement, "Artists may pay entry fee by check or PayPal on gallery's website." That's not a first but it does remind us how easy it is to add a "Pay Here" button to your art or music site.
