STUFF YOU SHOULDN'T MISS

      ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column.


      Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at various restaurants around Franklin County throughout the week, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
     These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

CELEBRATE!

      The arts has become more and more of a show in the fourth Celebrate St. Albans! as the mid-day festival takes over Taylor Park on Saturday with arts groups, church groups, community groups, police and fire departments, school kids, and volunteer groups strutting their stuff to show what they do. Taylor Park will overflow with art, music, activities, displays, and more from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
      See fine art by area artists. Meet Vermont writers. Listen to the DJ. Check out the police cruisers, fire trucks and other vehicles on display. Enjoy the craft tables. Stroll around Downtown. There are three major art exhibits and improvising thespians.
      The St. Albans Society for the Performing Arts will host two improvisational acting sessions, one for children in the morning and one for adults in the afternoon, in the E. A. Loomis Memorial Bandshell.
      The St. Albans Artists Guild and the Bishop Street Artists have joined forces to host an Art Show in the Park. About 20 local and regional artists are participating.
      The St. Albans Literary Guild will feature Vermont folklore writer and the "Bard of the Bizarre" Joe Citro, St. Albans poet Heidi Mosher, and St. Albans writer, reporter, and general funny guy Leon Thompson. Mr. Citro's latest work is Weird New England. Author House released Ms. Mosher's Freedom's Beauty: A Journal of Poetry and Inspirational Life Songs, Heart Songs, and Journeys: Long Live Paths of Hope this Spring. Mr. Thompson's third book , a humorous guide to Vermont, is due out this fall. It is tentatively titled Not Too Awful Bad.
      The Guild is home to author readings and signings, classes on literature, writing, and publishing, writing and book groups, and a competition for playwrights. Route 7, the guild's new literary magazine, is due this Fall.
      Ben & Jerry’s will provide ice cream and face painting.


ART ON THE WALLS

ESSEX JUNCTION--A great bonus for reporting on art shows is reporting when area artists win prizes. Valerie Ugro of Fairfax was awarded Second Place at the Champlain Valley Exposition Art Gallery for her painting of Alta, Utah, Devil's Castle. acrylic painting
      Ms. Ugro has more Little Cottonwood Canyon and Alta paintings at Her next show is South End Art Hop in South Burlington. She maintains an Open Studio/Gallery in Fairfax. Call 802-849-6185 for an appointment


SOUTH BURLINGTON--The annual South End Art Hop showcases some of the best-known visual artists in the state. Tomorrow and Saturday, dozens of artists and businesses in the South End will open their studio and gallery doors to an unusual view of art.
      Friday will offer free music plus food, and fun as well as about 400 artists on display from 5-9 p.m. Saturday adds demonstrations and workshops for the family to the art from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
      Gail Salzman of Fairfax will have small abstract paintings at the Alchemy Jewelry Collective at 2 Howard Street and a few large figure paintings from her underwater series at Evolution Yoga at 20 Kilburn Street. The ALCHEMY show continues Fridays and Saturdays through the end of September. Click here for more info.

SHELDON--Summer Music at Grace wraps up summer with a bonus concert by the Backyard Bluegrass Band tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m. BYBG features Franklin County’s own Will and Deb Patton and Jim and Cindy Weed with new originals for the event.
      Grace Church is located at 215 Pleasant Street, Sheldon. Admission is by a donation of $10 for adults or $5 for children. benefits the performers. ST. ALBANS--The Northeast Fiddlers Association will hold its monthly Fiddle Meet at the Moose Club on Sunday starting at 12 noon. Click here for more info.


GEORGIA--Marc and Carol Jones' host the second annual Music Festival from 3 - 8 p.m. The Festival has Open Mic starting at 3 p.m. Carol Ann Jones and the Superchargers with Keeghan Nolan take the stage at 6 p.m. The festival benefits Marty Courcelle's Century Ride.       We saw Keeghan fronting half of 8084 at the Fair on Saturday. She wowed the crowd.


JEFFERSONVILLE--The Village Tavern hosts Open Mic at 8 p.m. on Thursdays.


FAIRFAX--The regular Music Session continues Saturday with acoustic instrumentalists playing traditional songs at the Foothills Bakery, 1-4:30 p.m. Admission is free by donation.


ST. ALBANS--Chow Bella offers Music to Dine By with John Cassel on the piano on Wednesdays at 6:30 and the jazz and improv of Vern Colburn on the piano on Fridays at 5:30. Call 802.524.1405 or click here for more info.

     Poet, photographer and artist Linda Marcille of Brattleboro sells her paintings on silk internationally. She bends steam set French dyes, crepe de chine silk from China, and one-of-a-kind resist from New Zealand into her own whimsical style of an ancient Asian art form. Her Crow House Studio site includes Silk Art Galleries, the Lyme Awareness Art Project, as well as biographical info, the silk painting process, plus contact and sales info.
