STUFF YOU SHOULDN'T MISS

      ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column.


      Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at various restaurants around Franklin County throughout the week, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
     These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

ON STAGE LIVE

COLCHESTER--The UVM Old Time Music Club presents a Contra and Square Dance with callers Will Mentor and Mark Sustic in the Elly Long Music Center tomorrow evening at 7 p.m.

ENOSBURG FALLS--The Backyard Bluegrass Band brings a shake-the-winter-blues concert to St. Matthew’s Episcopal Hall on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The band features Will Patton and Deb Patton of Bakersfield, Jim Weed and Cindy Weed of Enosburg, and special guest Neil Rossi of Westford.
      Light refreshments will be available for sale at intermission. The concert is an official BYOB event.

FLETCHER--The community dance at the Meeting House with caller Mark Sustic and Fiddleheads scheduled for Saturday has been postponed; the new date will be announced later. Email for more info.


BROOKLINE, MA--Puppet Showplace Theater presents Puppetkabob in The Snowflake Man Saturday and Sunday at 1 and 3 p.m. each day. The puppet show tells the story of Jericho farmer Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley who took the first photographs of snowflakes and determined that no two are alike. The show blends live action, marionettes, watercolor landscapes, a hand made pop-up book, and music.
      Sarah Frechette of Georgia creates art for galleries, universities, theater and film. Ms. Frechette's grandfather inspired her interest in Snowflake Bentley. A fan of Bentley’s work, he owned three snowflake prints which he had purchased in 1927 for five cents each at Camp Abenaki.

FAIRFAX--The regular Music Session continues Saturday with acoustic instrumentalists playing traditional songs at the Foothills Bakery, 1-4:30 p.m. Admission is free by donation.


JEFFERSONVILLE--Smuggler’s Notch Inn hosts Open Mic every Tuesday at 9 p.m. Call 802.644.6765 for info.


ST. ALBANS--Chow Bella offers Music to Dine By with John Cassel on the piano on Wednesdays at 6:30 and the jazz and improv of Vern Colburn on the Piano on Fridays at 5:30. Call 802.524.1405 or click here for more info.


ESSEX JUNCTION--The Lincoln Inn brings live music back On Tap next month with the Phil Abair Band, Jim Branca, Quadra, the Nobby Reed Project, and Sturcrazie, all in February. The entertainment will be live every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night.

JANUARY-FEBRUARY ART DEADLINES

     More and more national and local artist calls are published through CallforEntries.org and other similar "clearing houses." Applications must be submitted through those websites. Each has a search feature to find the Calls published this week.


GIVE US SOME BLUES (January 22)--A major show at the Studio Place Arts main gallery in Barre wants blue entries showing magic, protection, moods, politics, excellence and more. Entry fee but free to SPA members. Call 802.479.7069 or click here for more info.


LANDSCAPES-REAL OR IMAGINARY (January 26)--The images for this juried Pacific Art League show can be rural or urban, representational or non-representational. The call is open to all artists in all 2-D or 3-D media except film, video or installation. Small cash awards. Entry fee. 2010 CULTURAL FELLOWSHIPS FOR VISUAL AND MEDIA ARTISTS (January 29)--The South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship program is not project-based; recipients may use the Fellowships according to their individual needs. All emerging, mid-career and established professional artists who live here but reside in Broward, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, or Palm Beach Counties are eligible. No entry fee. TRAFFIC OPERATIONS/FIRING RANGE ART (February 5)--The City of Denver will build a new facility and has a $95,000 budget for public art at the site, including design, fabrication, potential lighting and installation. The project is open to all artists in the U.S. working in all media and materials. Click here for more info and to apply.


MUSEO DE LAS AMERICAS (February 5)--Artists and visionaries from throughout the Americas are asked to submit exhibition or project proposals addressing the theme Liberadores/Liberators. A multi-media, multi-disciplinary exhibition featuring selected artwork, projects and / or performances will premiere at the Denver museum as part of In Good We Trust 2010.      Author, composer, singer, songwriter, steel guitarist, artist, and long distance runner Kevin Macneil Brown of Montpelier has a blog. His site has words, music, and images inspired by the power of Lake Champlain as well as his profile and contact info. The Shoe Horn in Montpelier also has an exhibit of Mr. Brown's work, through February.
