ST. ALBANS--Damage Control, the newest old band in Franklin County, is off to a busy start this weekend, playing Shooter's/Overtime Saloon on Friday at 9 p.m. and a Dinner/Dance at the Knights of Columbus on Saturday evening.
"With Mardi Gras in full swing this should be a great one," Scott Guptill said.
The Overtime Saloon is the first public performance for a band with a lot of experience. With 20 years as lead guitar, Mr. Guptill has played in Fractured, Furyous George, and Bad Horsey. His musical influences start with the 80s and 90s hair band era; he is a KISS fanatic. Scott Belisle, guitar, bass, drums, and vocals, is well known as a member of Fractured, High Society, 8084, and Tantrum. Nancy Lawrence, vocals, decided to become a rock singer after seeing Cyndi Lauper perform. Her influences include also Steven Tyler, Bruce Dickenson, and Janis Joplin. She has been singing professionally since the age of 16. New Jersey native Robert Caballero, guitar, performed with Sonic Riot, opened for Loudness at the Key Club, with Blacksmith, and Invitro at the Roxy, and performed at the Whiskey a GoGo and the Brick by Brick. Scott Mercure, drums, grew up with bands like Van Halen, Motley Crue, The Chilli Peppers, and AC/DC. He has gigged with Smokin' Gun, Care Factor Zero, Fractured, Alter Ego and filled in at times for Hang 10.
The Knights of Columbus dinner dance starts with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. and dinner by Bob Santini at 7:30. Admission is $25/person. Tickets for the dinner/dance are still available from any board member, at Bonnette Supply, or by email from John Bonnette.

BURLINGTON--Borders presents Swanton native Leon Thompson in his first ever book reading and signing at the Church Street store on Saturday from 1-3 p.m. He will read from his three books of (mostly) humor: Good Junk," "dork. - another look at my junk, and Not Too Awful Bad: A Storyteller's Guide to Vermont.
"Bring yer Mardi Gras beads and stay a while," he said.

ST. ALBANS--The St. Albans Historical Museum and the Osher Lifelong Learning Series presents Norman Rockwell, My Neighbor in which James Edgerton will speak on Wednesday at 11 a.m. about his experiences "as friend, next door neighbor to the Rockwell family and frequent model for Norman Rockwell."
James A. "Buddy" Edgerton, co-author of The Unknown Rockwell: A Portrait of Two Families, has a lifetime of stories about Rockwell, the private man. Mr. Edgerton is "the one man who knew him in a way no one else could."
Subscribers may attend any sessions of the series. Lectures are also open to non-members for a fee of $5 per lecture. All events are held on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. in the Bliss Auditorium on the third floor at the Museum.

BURLINGTON--International Women's Day presents the Bosnian Lilies in the UVM Davis Student Center on Wednesday at 12 noon. Email for more info.

ST. ALBANS and BURLINGTON--Buy your tickets and mark your calendars now as Ann Levy's dream continues; the Green Arts Bus and the Flynn Center present FDR by Ed Asner next Saturday, March 6.
FDR the one-man play explores the life of "that man in the White House" and the events and decisions that shaped this nation. The play is a soliloquy by Franklin Roosevelt as he reflects on the time--from inauguration in the Depression through World War II--as America's longest serving president. Roosevelt was the first and only president elected to four terms.
The play recreates his fireside chats, how he packed the Supreme Court and manipulated Congress, the controversy over Pearl Harbor, and his personal life with Eleanor as well as his affair with Lucy Mercer. The solo performance is based on Dore Schary's Broadway show, Sunrise at Campobello.
Ed Asner has received seven Emmy Awards and 16 nominations and five Golden Globe Awards. He is a member of the TV Academy Hall of Fame.
Admission including Orchestra A seating and a round-trip bus ride is $56 per person. The deadline to purchase tickets is today.
The four-show Green Art Bus season of music, dance and drama has included A Canadian Brass Christmas in December and Serenade/The Proposition by the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company last month. The season will conclude with a Lyric Theater performance of la Cage aux Folles in April.
The Green Arts Bus is a local 26 passenger bus provided by Buddy's Taxi with support from the Franklin County Regional Chamber of Commerce. Six additional seats may be available for people with existing or season tickets. The cost of the round trip bus ticket alone is $10.
The bus will leave from the Senior Center on Messenger Street at 7 pm. In keeping with Flynn policy, the tickets are non-refundable even if the weather is severe and the bus driver feels it is unsafe to drive.
Call Jim Walsh (802.524.2444) or email for more info about the Green Arts Bus.

A modern Alberto Giacometti sculpture, the powerful Walking Man I, sold for $104.3 million at Sotheby's on February 3. It is the highest price ever paid for a single work of art sold at auction. Gustav Klimt's Kirche in Cassone sold for $43.2 million at the same auction. Art sales, like other economic indicators in Vermont, lag the national indicators but these sales show an upward drive in the market that will carry our small state along.
The Mei Moses Fine Art Index fell 24% last year; the index tracks changes in the price of artworks in the New York auction market. I can't help but think the Mei Moses will be up for 2010. The Market Insights & Analysis section of the site contains annual updates of the returns, risks, and comparisons with other assets for the prior 25 and 50 years in the auction market. There are also Collecting Category updates and other tools.
