Today is Anne's and my 32nd anniversary. No Foolin'. Happy anniversary, Sweetie.
Despite what Sports Illustrated may have reported, Danica Patrick will not be body painted for the Ice Breaker 200--NASCAR DOES ART benefit race on April 3 at the newest racing venue, the Sugar Bowl in Pittsford, Vermont; however, her car, the number 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet, will be. REALLY REALLY FAST ART
"We're working with artist Warren Kimble and all our car owners to build this project," Vermont Sugar Bowl Communications Manager Carolyn Dumfries said. Each of the race cars in the Nationwide Series race will be painted with a design created by artists in the three northern New England states.
"This event will be much like the 'really really pig show' of Brandon except the parade will be faster," Mr. Kimble said. Much much faster.
Well known in Vermont, national folk artist Warren Kimble spearheaded the Palettes of Vermont project as the first major statewide project in which artists, schoolchildren and talented residents transformed humble objects into works of art. Our own World's Largest Palette was part of that effort.
Mr. Kimble gathered drivers, car owners, and arts council chairs (including yours truly) last month at the southern Vermont racetrack. We picked four Franklin County artists.
Ms Patrick chose to carry a surreal, gauzy angel proposed by Franklin artist Natalie LaRocque-Bouchard. Chad Blount selected Bob Eldridge's quirky maritime art for his number 10 Braun Racing Toyota. Kevin Lepage of Shelburne wants my own photographs of the USS North Carolina on his hood and a woman body surfing on Lake Champlain on the fenders of his number 156 Mac Hill Motorsports Chevrolet. Chrissy Wallace will adorn the Fuel-Doctor.com Chevrolet with Harald Aksdal's hawk stooping over the Wildlife refuge. The hawk is actually a falcon which is a nice irony for a Chevy driver.
"I may have been the first artist to sign on," Ms. LaRocque-Bouchard said, "because my murals are usually as big as cars anyway."
Six other drivers including Bobby Gerhart, Lucas Oil Chevrolet; Jeff Green, Tobacco Free Florida Chevrolet; Brad Keselowski, Discount Tire Dodge; Eric McClure, Hefty Ford; Paul Menard, Menards Ford; and Kenny Wallace, Hot Rod Grills Chevrolet, will carry the work of other Vermont artists during the event. The remainder of the field will have work by New Hampshire and Maine artists.
NASCAR worked with Dan Pattullo of Sheldon to digitize the work in preparation for the full body decals now applied to race cars.
The NASCAR Nationwide Series is the stock car racing series one step below the "big league" Sprint Cup. Nationwide races attract Cup racers as well as drivers working to step up. They are usually held the day before a Sprint Cup race to encourage fans to attend both events.
This is the first major event at the Vermont Sugar Bowl in Pittsford. The new track is a .956 mile oval speedway with 1,500 foot straights banked at 1 degree and 96 foot wide turns variably banked up to 26 degrees. A 1.46 mile, 11 turn Road Course will be completed this summer. There is seating for 91,262 fans. "There is no Sprint Cup race this weekend but we hope to have one on the schedule next year," Ms. Dumfries said.
The green flag will drop for the Ice Breaker 200--NASCAR DOES ART race, one leg of the NASCAR Nationwide Series, at 3 p.m. this Saturday, April 3. Admission ranges from $5 for youths under 16 to $75 for adults in the reserved section. Tickets are still available at ticketmaster.AllArtsCouncil.org. Gates open at 7 a.m. Proceeds will benefit local art projects in all three states.
ENOSBURG FALLS--The Enosburg Community Art Project will host a community gathering at the Opera House in Enosburg Falls on Saturday from 1 - 4 p.m. ART ON THE WALLS
The artists used interviews with 28 Enosburg residents of all ages from area newcomers to multi-generational Enosburg natives to create a series of intimate portraits. A 64-page book of the results by Forrest Dunnavant will be for sale at a modest price at the exhibit.
This project was sponsored by the Artist in Residence Gallery, the Enosburg Conservation Commission, the Friends of the Opera House at Enosburg Falls, the Enosburg Historical Society, and Enosburg High School, and was funded in part by the Vermont Arts Council.
ENOSBURG FALLS--The Artist In Residence Gallery features different artists each month. This month, the spotlight is on painter and multi media artist Rebecca Anne Bennett, wooden bowl turner Toby Fulwiler, painter and photographer Natalie LaRocque-Bouchard, and photographer and basket weaver Margaret Young.
The A.I.R. gallery hosts a free meet-the-artists reception with refreshments tonight from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. The exhibit continues through the end of April.
The Artist in Residence art cooperative features paintings, fiber arts, stained glass, sculpture, lamps, pottery, folk art boxes, scarves, hats and more by 45 Franklin County and surrounding area artists. It is owned and operated by the artists and sponsors. The Village Frame Shoppe is located within the coop as a resident framer. The Blue Crayon, a small private studio, is available there for individual or small group lessons. The gallery, located at 349 Main Street, is open Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
ST ALBANS--The Northwestern Medical Center Gallery hosts NMC occupational therapist Nancy Jacobus this month. Ms. Jacobus frequently paints on silk and fills her "canvases" with vibrantly colored flowers and whimsical dancers. Note cards made from her work are available in the hospital gift shop.
The show continues through the end of April.
BURLINGTON--The eighth annual Cabin Fever Reliever benefit dance/concert will feature honky-tonk band the Starline Rhythm Boys with special guest Bill Kirchen; cajun/zydeco band Yankee Chank; LeRoy Preston and Louise Kirchen; and a special guest appearance by Elisabeth von Trapp with Peter Riley, all in the Emerald Grand Ballroom at the Sheraton on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ON STAGE LIVE

ESSEX JUNCTION--On Tap at the Lincoln Inn presents the Nobby Reed Project in Blues Night at tonight at 7 p.m. On Tap also has Phil Abair Band tomorrow at 9 p.m., Sturcrazie on Saturday at 9 p.m. and Bob Degree & the Bluegrass Storm on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

BURLINGTON--The UVM Old Time Music Club and Young Tradition Vermont present the Starry Mountain Singers in Ira Allen Chapel on Tuesday at 8 p.m. The Singers--Stefan Amidon, Avery Book, Jeff Fellinger, Gideon Crevoshay, Nathan Morrison, Zara Bode, Emily Miller, Suzannah Park and Cora Nielsen--are a world music vocal ensemble performing traditional sacred and secular music from Georgia, Bulgaria, Corsica and the United States. The concert benefits the Tom Sustic Fund.
The group will hold a shape note workshop at 5:30 - 7 p.m. and a potluck supper at 7 - 8 p.m. Email or click here for more info.

ST. ALBANS--The St. Albans Historical Museum and the Osher Lifelong Learning Series presents A Musical Interlude by Pat and Ray Harwick on Wednesday at 11 a.m. The event will include music from around the world with Irish, Welsh, Scottish, Swedish and American folk-songs on Hammered Dulcimers and Scottish Wire-strung Harp.
Subscribers may attend any sessions of the series. Lectures are also open to non-members for a fee of $5 per lecture. All events are held on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. in the Bliss Auditorium on the third floor at the Museum.
BURLINGTON--The Bosnian Lilies make a Bosnia presentation at Fletcher Free Library on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
The Arts Council will hold a workshop for grant seekers at the St. Albans State Police Barracks on Wednesday, April 7. VAC will host a session for individual artists from 10 a.m. - 12 noon and for organizations and schools from 1 - 3 p.m. The workshops are free.
