Rick Manahan died of a heart attack Monday afternoon. He was just 51. RICK MANAHAN, FRIEND
I've known Rick for years but the first time I served on a board with him was at St Albans for the Future. It's impressive that he was a nice and wonderful man; it's more impressive that he was, bar none, the best Board leader I have ever worked with, while being a nice and wonderful man.
Rick raised horses, coached Little League, and was a diehard Mets fan here in Red Sox country. We'll all miss him.
Scotty's Taxi presents the indie rock of The Fizz in the free Summer Sounds concert in Highgate Municipal Park on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. FIZZY BUT NO FLOOD
With Dave Kleh, vocals, guitars, keyboards; Jim White, keyboards and vocals; Bob Greenlese, drums and percussion; and Howard Ring, bass, this renamed Summer Sounds group "sounds like Steely Dylan on the 'Dark Side of the Moon'." The group played here last summer as "Flood in the Fizzy Factory" but Mr. Kleh said because FitFF "was too long and difficult to explain."
"Mix up a bunch of great music that you have heard over the years and pour it into a blender," Mr. Kleh said. Look for pieces of Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Bob Dylan, Talking Heads, and The Beatles. Stir well. "Throw the entire mixture into the trash and try to remember what it sounded like." The result will be an evening of "little songs that sound like you should have heard them before somewhere."
Dan Bolles says their seven-minute epic song In the Days to Come is "alternately goofy, strangely poetic and charmingly geeky. In other words, it is [The Fizz] in microcosm." Their current CD is A Song for the Troops.
Just before the concert, stop by for Highgate Library-Summer Sounds Social in the Park starting at 6:30 p.m. The social hour is a chance to visit with friends, read the odd book, and eat plenty of delicious desserts.
The Summer Sounds concerts are sponsored by the Town of Highgate and the All Arts Council, and underwritten by Chevalier Drilling, Desorcie's Market, Drummac Septic Service, O. C. McCuin and Sons, Ray's Extrusion Dies and Tubing, and Scotty's Taxi.
The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont. The concerts are always on Sunday evenings, always at 7 p.m., always in Highgate Municipal Park, and always free. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair as you settle in to enjoy outdoor family music and festivities. The rain site is the Highgate United Methodist Church.

The Opera House at Enosburg Falls presents Hello Dolly! beginning tonight and continuing tomorrow and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. each night. HORACE VANDERGELDER, FAMOUS AGAIN
The musical farce was written by Michael Stewart based on a Thornton Wilder story with lyrics and music by Jerry Herman. In turn of the (last) century New York, Dolly Levi is in town to meddle a little, matchmaker a little, teach a little mandolin, arranges things... like furniture and daffodils and lives. She seeks a wife for grouchy old Horace Vandergelder, well-known half-a-millionaire and New York's almost most eligible bachelor.
The cast includes Arlene Jarvis, Jim Bray, Peter Garrow, Michael Boomhower, Emily Evans and Danielle Yandow as well as your dentist, organic butcher, and the fellow who just fixed my furnace.
Admission is $12 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens. SHELDON SPRINGS--The 3rd annual Liberate Music and Yoga Festival returns to Poor Farm Road on Friday and Saturday with some of the same artists, vendors, kids activities, an art market, and healing arts practitioners from last year, along with a mix of fresh new ones. ISLE LA MOTTE--Island Arts presents a Celebration of Native Ways at St. Anne’s Shrine on Sunday from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Arts and crafts will be on display and for sale by Jack Sabon (Athabaskan) of Stowe; wood carver Richard Menard, of Highgate; Kathy Craig of Isle La Motte, Richard Philips (Black Horse) from Plattsburgh; and Robert and Jeanne Sulesky of Rochester, NH; jewelry by Hilde Barnes; Evelyn Maiskell of Connecticut with have tribal shirts and other clothing. COLCHESTER--The Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival opens on Sunday at the Elley-Long Music Center at Saint Michael's College. The East Coast Chamber Orchestra with 17 young string players and Soovin Kim opens on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Ensembles from ECCO perform Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
2010 Festival Subscriptions are still available; the tickets include the four main Festival Concerts, as well as the Virtuoso Showcase, Sounding Board, and all master classes as part of Master Class Saturday. BURLINGTON-Carol Ann Jones will sing the National Anthem for the Vermont Lake Monsters at Centennial Field on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. It is 25-cent hot dog night.
Sadly, the Opera House Tour at the Barre Opera House for the Vermont National Guard Charitable Foundation and the Higher Ground benefit for the American Cancer Society have both been postponed. Watch this space for the new schedule.
WORKSHOP (Open until filled)--The South Shore Art Center (SSAC) will host an Encaustic Workshop September 25-26 with Visiting Artist Kim Bernard. Participants will learn to prepare supports, mix colors, apply wax, fuse, etch, layer, combine collage, transfer Xerox images and incorporate found objects. Click here to register. BODY LANGUAGE (September 17)--The SSAC national juried exhibition is open to all artists and all media with no geographical restrictions. Today would have been my grandfather's 120th birthday, a date he shared with Orville Wright and Ogden Nash. Interesting man, Wilbur Dunning. He was a chemistry professor, his sister an opera singer, and one brother was signed to play professional baseball but gave it up because he would not pitch on Sundays. BOPPA
He encouraged us to see art. He made sure my mom, a painter, attended Spring Garden Institute for fashion design after she was graduated from Swarthmore. He made me look beyond the motion of a piston or the lines of a yacht to see the lines of a cloud.
I called him "Boppa" and now my granddaughters call me that.
Music Alive composer-in-residence Rob Paterson has been blogging about the week he spent working with Vermont Youth Orchestra and the Vermont Youth Philharmonia members. His residency kicks off the concert season for the two orchestras. The site contains Maestro Paterson's posts as well as posts by flautist Emily Wiggett, a large archive, and info about the VYOA.
