STUFF YOU SHOULDN'T MISS

      ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column.


      Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at various restaurants around Franklin County throughout the week, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
     These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

TALENT WILL OUT

      The Opera House at Enosburg Falls presents the 18th annual Opera House Talent Show on Saturday at 7 p.m. The popular annual variety show offers cash prizes in both Junior and Adult Divisions.
      "We have a new format," Sarah Jo Willey said. Karen McFeeters will headline a group of talented local adult performers who will entertain throughout the show. Ms. Willey will also introduce Mud Light as a new annual segment, Rising Star awards in each division, and a group number finale.
      In addition to the new format there are new prizes for Junior Division (ages 5-14) and Adult Division (15-24). The new prize package for the top Junior and Adult acts includes studio recording time from West Street Digital and Armand Messier's Recording Studio, a professional photo shoot with Wayne Tarr, and a newspaper feature article. Rising Star award winners will receive iTunes gift cards.
      "We're pleased to have The Optimist Newspaper continue as a sponsor," Ms. Willey said. "Heather McKeown will award the annual Optimist Awards. It's going to be a great evening!"
      Admission is $10 for adults or $8 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available at Community National Bank, Enosburg Pharmacy, Merchants Bank, Parkside Grill, Peoples Trust Bank, Precious Things Jewelry, Somerset Inn, and TD Bank in Enosburg plus Better Planet Books and the Franklin County Regional Chamber of Commerce in St. Albans.


ART ON THE WALLS

SWANTON--The Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge Project 2010 Art Exhibit and Sale began last Saturday and continues through November 5 at the Refuge. It features the work of Saint Albans Artists Guild members.
      The artwork was inspired by the flora and fauna of the refuge found on nature walks with Joe Belanger. Each painter and photographer worked from life in the Refuge observed in several visits in July. The artists worked individually in a departure from past years' projects in which SAAG artists used SAAG photographs to create paintings and other pieces.


ST. ALBANS--Collins Perley Sports Center hosts the annual Fall Craft and Foods Show on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. each day. Northern Vermont's biggest and best show has over 150 booths and exhibitors with and Vermont made foods.
      St. Albans artist Karen Day-Vath will have new art, notecards, Christmas notecards, welcome slates, and snowman slates at the show. Great gifts for Christmas at affordable prices, she said.
      Admission is $3 for those age 19 and over, $2 for 15-18, and free anyone up to age 14. Tickets are available at the door.


ON STAGE LIVE

ST. ALBANS--Chow!Bella presents Carol Ann Jones on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
      "This will be a nice evening of song and celebration of autumn with yummy dishes of the season." Ms. Jones said. "I hope you can come!"
      Chow!Bella also offers Music to Dine By with John Cassel on the piano on Wednesdays at 6:30 and the jazz and improv of Vern Colburn on the Piano on Fridays at 5:30. Call 802.524.1405 or click here for more info.


SOUTH HERO--The Green Mountain Folklore Society will hold its Fall Meeting at St. Rose of Lima Church on Saturday at 9 a.m. "Folklore is all about people, their stories, their songs, their arts and crafts."
      The Fall Meeting includes a social hour, business meeting, Gabfest, noon Dinner, and an afternoon program led by Peg Clark, author of Memories of The Ups & Downs of The Island Line with a visit to the South Hero History Museum.

BURLINGTON--Parima on Pearl Street presents the Keeghan Nolan Band on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
      "There are only 2 more Keeghan Nolan Band dates before she heads off to Nashville and I go into hibernation," Wendy Maquera said about this concert.
      The Parima Acoustic Lounge bills itself as Burlington's Cultural Café, with musical and spoken-word entertainment several nights a week. They have a weekly poetry night, a weekly acoustic singer/song-writer night, and other live events. Call Parima (802.864.7917) to reserve a table up front, a booth on the side, or a balcony table. There will be unique dinner and drink specials just for Keeghan's show.
      Admission is just $5.


GRAND ISLE--The Grand Isle House Concerts present High-Low-Jack (Sarah Hotchkiss and John Mowad) and Ann Whiting at on Saturday at 7 p.m.

CRAFTSBURY--The Music Box presents Yankee Chank on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Cajun dance band performs traditional dance music with traditional instruments from southwest Louisiana. The concert will include the two-steps and waltzes played in the dance halls and honky-tonks of Louisiana.

ST. ALBANS--Northwest Access TV (the St. Albans, Swanton, and Highgate Channel 15) presents the Vermont Youth Orchestra this afternoon at 5 p.m. Tomorrow, Almost Live! presents The Fizz, Set 1, at 8:30 p.m.

     Pianist Paul Webb plays in the Burlington area. He is the house pianist at the Inn at Shelburne Farms.
