(FUNCTIONAL) ART ON THE WALLS
I grew up around boats but I don't understand Superboat scoring. In Superboat Unlimited, the 170 mph+ class on water, Cintron apparently won by covering 42.4 miles at an average speed of 114 mph and received 250 points. Last place went to Mixed Emotions for covering 0 miles at an average speed of 0 mph for which that boat got 182.5 points. That was gratuitous knowledge and not at all related to art.We talk about the "art of boat design" and there is indeed still as much art as science in hull development, from the simplest dinghy to the fastest racers under sail or power. Ties in to the creative economy, that does. Different kind of art, though.
I've been looking at fine art, the paintings and photographs of the sports and activities that enthrall us.
The Art of the Boat, a series of yachting photographs from the Rosenfeld Collection, is a small part of the largest single collection of maritime photography in the world. Mystic Seaport holds the nearly one million images that document the period from 1881 to the present. The Rosenfeld Family, David, Morris, Stanley and William, captured the fusion of man, boat, and the sea in a way that speaks to me, personally.
I started this essay by looking for paintings or photos of the Superboats and found the Rosenfeld Flying Spinnakers by pure serendipity. It is arguably Stanley Rosenfeld's best known photograph.
There's more. Illustrated with more photographs from the Rosenfeld Collection, the Mystic Seaport book, On Land and On Sea by Margaret Andersen Rosenfeld, extends the art with explanation. That book features the lives of women in yachting, and also as workers, care givers, and sportswomen throughout the twentieth century. The interpretive essays that accompany the images illustrate the social and historical context.Similar name, different place: The Land and Sea Collection in Palm City, Florida, shows an original sculpture of a custom offshore powerboat racer. The sculpture is actually the builder's concept model designed by Daniel J. McCarthy. The model is mounted on a Plexiglas base as a work of art. As a sculpture, this piece shows her racing features and her beauty.
Boats are not our only avocation. Long time readers will also remember that the NASA Artistry of Space art collection rode the rails to St. Albans in 1997 in Artrain USA's only visit to Vermont in the 20th Century. The NASA Art Program has invited more than 250 American artists to interpret space flight through their art. That resulted in a rich visual record of space exploration by artists ranging from Peter Max, Norman Rockwell, and Andy Warhol to Jamie Wyeth.
Fine art in the paintings and photographs of the sports and activities that engage us, from Superboats to NASCAR, from kicking a soccer ball to testing physics with a space launch, not only makes our lives better, it makes us more interesting.
