The First Congregational Church presents the Brazilian and Latin Jazz trio Bernal-Eckroth-Ennis with special guest, saxophonist Michael Zsoldos, in the sanctuary on Friday at 7 p.m. The concert will offer bossanovas, boleros, tangos, andean folk tunes, original compositions, jazz standards and more, all with their own twist. Born and raised in St. Albans, Mr. Zsoldos is a saxophonist, teacher, composer, and arranger influenced by Lester Young, Don Byas, and Coleman Hawkins. He studied with Branford Marsalis for three years. He has performed at the New Orleans Jazz Festival with the Dartmouth Gospel Choir horn section, for which he is the lead arranger, plays with the Discover Jazz Festival Big Band, and the Vermont Jazz Center Big Band in Brattleboro. He is the Band Director at Woodstock Union High School and chairs the Connecticut Valley Music Festival Association. He wrote and performed a full-length score for the award-winning PBS documentary “Birdsong and Coffee: A Wake-Up Call.” His debut CD, Off the Cuff, is available now.
Natalia Bernal, vocals, Mike Eckroth, piano, and Jason Ennis, 7-string guitar blend the rhythms and songwriting traditions of Brazil, Chile, Cuba and other Latin American countries with the spontaneous and exhilarating improv of jazz. They released their first CD, La Voz de Tres, in 2010.
Admission is by a suggested donation of $10 ($5 for students). All are welcome to attend.
ENOSBURG FALLS--The Artist In Residence Gallery features different artists each month. This month, the spotlight is on the fiber arts of Nancy Adriance, paintings by Jean Cannon and Helen Kyle, and photographs by Wayne Tarr. The A.I.R. gallery hosts a free meet-the-artists reception with refreshments tonight from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. The exhibit continues through the end of February. ART ON THE WALLS
The art cooperative features paintings, fiber arts, stained glass, sculpture, lamps, pottery, folk art boxes, scarves, hats and more by 45 Franklin County and surrounding area artists. It is owned and operated by the artists and sponsors. Located at 349 Main Street, the gallery is open Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
ST ALBANS--The Northwestern Medical Center Gallery hosts Karen Day Vath this month. Her paintings All that Jazz and Let's Jam are also featured on the Vermont Public Radio on air membership drive Art Mug this month and her artwork, note cards, hand painted slates and some other artistic surprises will be available at the 2011 Maple Festival.
The show continues through the end of February.

BURLINGTON--Burlington Parks and Recreation and Young Tradition Vermont present the Burlington Winter Festival with art, music, shivering wet people, and more. A Snow Sculpture Competition begins this afternoon and continues through noon Saturday. Winter-themed art exhibits by Vermonters Martha Stevenson, Anna Vreman, and Sean Dye fills City Hall plus Snowboard art by Abby Keller at Borders and an historical photo display in around downtown. There will be live music and performances all day Saturday. Special Olympics presents the 16th annual Burlington Penguin Plunge on Sunday morning. A free shuttle runs between Church Street, the Waterfront, and Battery Park, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. each day.
There will be an artist reception in the Metropolitan Gallery at City Hall tomorrow from 5-7 p.m.
A Young Tradition Showcase and Dance features teacher/student, mentor/mentee, parent/child combinations in Contois Auditorium on Saturday from 3 - 5 p.m. The performers include Sarah Blair and Maria Naumann, Tim Cummings and Haliana Burhans, Latimer and Dave Hoke, Beth Anne McFadden and dance students, Heather Morris and dance students, Pete Sutherland and Eileen O'Grady, Jim Burns, Brianna Farver and Andrew Hathaway, and Karen Sutherland and Ayla MacManaway.
The Family Contra and International Dance in Contois Auditorium on Saturday from 6 - 8 p.m. offers dance callers/leaders Hannah Goodwin, Eliza Arsenault and Charley Ferguson from UVM, Mediha Jusufagic, and Mark Sustic with Fiddleheads and guests playing music, and a performance and participatory dance with the Bosnian Lilies.

MONTPELIER--The Vermont Legislature 2011 Farmers' Night Wednesday night concert series features Summer Sounds favorites the Sky Blue Boys (Banjo Dan and Willy Lindner). All performances take place at 7:30 p.m. in the House Chamber at the Vermont State House.
Shelly Pottala is the latest addition to the blogosphere. She may call herself "the Manager of a home with 2 children and 2 dogs," but regular readers know her better as the organizer of the annual Art in Bloom festival, a day of music, art exhibits, and food in Fairfax, all as a benefit for Fairfax community organizations.
