The Vermont Humanities Council program began statewide this week. Vermont Reads To Kill a Mockingbird this year with events around the state. The 8-year old community-centered program reads a book and plans activities centered around it. People of all ages, interests, abilities, and backgrounds have open, intergenerational conversations about the books, the humanities, and sometimes literacy itself. In 2010, 102 communities took part in Vermont Reads The Day of the Pelican. That discussion of the Harper Lee classic novel introduced the only first novel to win a Pulitzer Prize whose author never wrote again. VERMONT READS
Here in Franklin County, the Book Discussion Series delves into World War II the Loss of the Age of Innocence. The three novels of the series, Catch-22, Rumors of Peace, and Night, offer three memorable protagonists, an Army bombardier, a girl on the American homefront, and the teenage survivor of the Nazi genocide, to illustrate coming-of-age themes against the backdrop of World War II.
The second Thursday series, led by Cheryl Heneveld begins tonight at the Fairfax Community Library at 6:30 p.m. The books include Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, Rumors of Peace by Ella Leffland on March 10, and Night by Elie Wiesel on April 14. Call Lauren Cady (802.849.2420) for more info.
Upcoming is the second book discussion series on Farms and Gardens, beginning February 23 with Sue Hubbell's A Country Year in the Montgomery Town Library.
Also on February 23, the look at books and music continues with presentations on Vermont History through Song, Dorothy Canfield Fisher, a Vermonter for the World, Reflections on Libraries, Community and Historic Preservation, Disappearing Alphabets and the Future of the Written Word, and more.
The next You Come Too poetry discussion, a monthly event with VHC Executive Director Peter Gilbert, considers the poetry of Emily Dickinson in March at the VHC office in Montpelier.
ST. ALBANS--Chow Bella continues with great music as Carol Ann Jones plays an acoustic concert with Jon Sochin on steel guitar and Gary Spaulding on the cajone tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. "It's an acoustic gig this time around, playing mostly my originals but with a spattering of love songs and popular happy tunes!" she said. Ms. Jones usually fronts The Superchargers. Her debut indie album, Out of the Blue, showcases her broad range of music from Mr. Engineer to the "Farmhouse Blues."

ESSEX JUNCTION--On Tap at the Lincoln Inn offers Blues Night with the Bob Stannard Blues Band tonight at 7 p.m. Justice keeps their rock rolling on Friday night at 9 p.m. And take your sweetie to Open Mic with Wylie on Monday at 7 p.m.
Justice has four well-seasoned musicians with Chris Fleury, lead vocals and drums; Scott Belisle on bass and backup vocals; Todd Dunn, lead and rhythm guitar; and Scott Guptill, rhythm guitar and backup vocals.

MIDDLEBURY--The Mahaney Center for the Arts hosts Pete Sutherland and Friends including Will Patton, plus Tim Cummings, Colin McCaffrey, Jeremiah McLane, Ken Perlman, Karen Sutherland, and more than two dozen other singers and fiddlers in the Concert Hall at Middlebury College tomorrow evening at 8 p.m. The event kicks off the Northeast Heritage Music Camp Scholarship Fund.

MORRISVILLE--The Farmers and Artisans Market continues through the winter, weather permitting, at the River Arts Center every Wednesday from 3 - 7 p.m. This week the market hosts an "Eat for Pete" benefit with proceeds given directly to Pete's Greens to help them rebuild their barn and storage facility.
