      ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column.


      Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at various restaurants around Franklin County throughout the week, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
     These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

ART ON THE WALLS

      Fine artist Corliss Blakely of Saint Albans has been in the news for her iPad-paintings but she is first and foremost an oil painter. ON STAGE LIVE

STOWE--The Rusty Nail presents Justice on Friday at 9 p.m. The Franklin County-based rock band includes Chris Fleury, lead vocals; Scott Belisle on bass and backup vocals; Todd Dunn, lead and rhythm guitar; Mike Fredette, drums; and Scott Guptill, rhythm guitar and backup vocals.
      Justice has announced that founder Chris Fleury will leave the group this year. Mr. Fleury will continue with his own band, Cousin Itt. The band has auditioned for a new vocalist/front person for a month or so and plans to release a two-part video interview with the band on Youtube in February.

BRATTLEBORO--The fifth annual Northern Roots Traditional Music Festival brings together local and regional musicians on Saturday at the New England Youth Theater with afternoon sessions at McNeill’s Brewery on Saturday beginning at noon.
      Mary Alice and Peter Amidon, Peter Barnes, Doug Creighton, Maeve Gilchrist, Anna Patton, Brendan Taaffe, and more will present northern musical traditions from Ireland, Scotland, England and French Canada. The Festival begins includes daytime participation and performance activities, including workshops, panels, mini-concerts, pub sessions, dance band prep, and a family dance, and concludes with an evening performance.

SOUTH HERO--A Community Dance and Library Celebration features a potluck and Fiddleheads at the Folsom Educational Center on Saturday at 5 p.m.
      Caller Mark Sustic and members of Fiddleheads will lead dancers of all ages and all abilities in a variety of fun and simple group dances. Absolute beginners are welcome, with or without a partner and non-dancers are encouraged to enjoy the food and the music.
      Fiddleheads is a group of young people who learn and perform traditional music. The potluck begins at 5 p.m. and dancing at 6 p.m.

ST. ALBANS--Cosmic Bakery & Cafe presents Carol Ann Jones with Gary Spaulding this evening at 7 p.m.


FAIRFAX--Country Pantry presents Carol Ann Jones with Will Patton and Gary Spaulding on Saturday at 6 p.m.
      "Support live local music and come join us," Ms. Jones said. "It's a great way to beat those winter blues."

BURLINGTON--The Vermont Symphony Orchestra presents VSO Masterworks 3 with the VSO Chorus and guest soloists on the Flynn MainStage on Saturday at 8 p.m.
      The program of Faure's soothing Requiem and Mozart's sublime Requiem celebrates of Mozart's 256th birthday and conductor Robert De Cormier's 90th birthday, both of which took place this month.
      Admission is $58/$45/$30/$16. Student admission is $9 in all sections other than the top tier. Click here for tickets and more info.


BURLINGTON--The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts hosts the VYO Winter Concert on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Vermont Youth Orchestra Winter concert, led by Music Director Jeffrey Domoto, features Rossini's Overture to La Gazza Ladra ("The Thieving Magpie") and Cesar Franck's "Symphony in D minor."
      VYO member Quinn Parker will join the orchestra to present the Trombone Concerto of Danish composer Launy Grondahl.

     The VYO runout concert at Harwood Union High School scheduled for Friday has been cancelled due to the weather conditions. Vouchers issued for the Harwood concert will be honored at the Flynn Box Office on Sunday. The Box Office opens at 2:00 pm. Please arrive early if you plan to turn in a voucher.


CREATIVE ECONOMY

SAVE THE DATE--The 2013 NEFA Creative Communities Exchange will take place in Portland, Maine, June 6-7. Participants will share practical experience about implementing creative economy projects plus tools for strengthening communities.

GRANTS--The federal government now requires that all organizational grantees supported by federal funds register for D-U-N-S numbers. Dun & Bradstreet provides the unique nine digit identification number, for each physical location of your business. D-U-N-S Number assignment is FREE for all businesses required to register with the US Federal government for contracts or grants.
      Individual applicants are exempt from this requirement.

     The Swanton Public Library & the Franklin-Grand Isle Bookmobile have joined forces for the fifth annual Stuffed Animal sleepover at the library. Permission slips for your stuffed animal are provided.

     Oil painter, sculptor, Carolyn Enz Hack of Thetford uses color, pattern, and spatial ambiguity to explore our physical and emotional experience. Water is her primary inspiration.
