STOWE--OK, it's a little bit out of town. A NEW EAARTH IN TOWN
The Vermont Youth Orchestra presents the spring concert A New Eaarth at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center on Friday at 8 p.m.
The program includes orchestral works by Dvorak, Copland, and Elgar. VYO principal cellist Liam John will solo for the first movement of Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto. The concert will conclude with the Gustav Holst's orchestral showpiece, The Planets.
The VYO Chorus and environmentalist/author Bill McKibben will join the orchestra for the world premiere of A New Eaarth written by Robert Paterson. The orchestral/choral performance marks the culmination of Mr. Paterson's three-year Music Alive Composer-in-Residence with the VYOA. The composition weaves in the words of Wendell Berry, James Joyce, Percy Bysshe Shelly, and William Wordsworth. Mr. McKibben will narrate the premiere performances.
Impressionable audience members should be aware that music specifically and the arts in general often have a political agenda. Mr. Paterson's piece is no exception, inspired by Mr. McKibben's book, Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet, which argues that massive climate change is underway in spite of admissions by scientists such as environmental guru James Lovelock that the entire movement is made up of scaremongers about climate change.
"The problem is we don't know what the climate is doing. We thought we knew 20 years ago. That led to some alarmist books - mine included - because it looked clear-cut, but it hasn't happened," Dr. Lovelock told MSNBC. A protester protesting the protest. Cool.

Boy Scout Troop 70 is coordinating Green Up Day in St. Albans City on Saturday morning. Some bags and gloves will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. Meet at 9 a.m. at the JC Penney parking lot and other locations around the city.
BURLINGTON--The VYO Spring Concert moves to the Flynn Main Stage on Sunday, May 6, at 3 p.m. Admission to the Flynn is $15 for adults and seniors and $10 for students. Tickets for Sunday's concert are available from the Flynn Box Office (802.86.FLYNN) or click here for more info
ENOSBURG FALLS--The Artist In Residence Gallery features different artists each month. This month, the spotlight is on photographers Suzanne Dollois and Eugene Garron and on multi media artist Nancy Hayden. ART ON THE WALLS
Ms. Dollois works in all areas of photography but she has focused on hand cut collages for the A.I.R. gallery. Mr. Garron uses photographic paint to add dimension to his black and white images. Artist, farmer and engineer, Nancy Hayden is currently finishing her MFA in creative writing.
The A.I.R. gallery resumes its Thursday free meet-the-artists reception with refreshments this evening from 5 - 8 p.m. The exhibit continues through the end of May.
The Artist in Residence art cooperative features paintings, fiber arts, stained glass, sculpture, lamps, pottery, folk art boxes, scarves, hats and more by 45 Franklin County and surrounding area artists. It is owned and operated by the artists and sponsors. The gallery, located at 321 Main Street, is open Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. plus the first Sunday of each month, noon to 5 p.m.
ST. ALBANS--Redstone Villa will host a free Community of Vermont Elders program and performance this afternoon at 1 p.m. The event includes a humorous half-hour "Savvy Seniors" Medicare Fraud Performance in collaboration with the Lyric Theater. Refreshments will be served. ON STAGE LIVE

ST. ALBANS--St. Albans Historical Society presents the Northern Bronze Spring concert Bells Blithe and Bold: Music That Stirs the Soul and Enlivens the Heart, on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Vermont's premiere community handbell ensemble was formed in 2002; members live mostly in northwestern Vermont and play concerts and events throughout New England. Their CD, Joyful Rhythms for Bells, is available for purchase at concerts. Bells Blithe and Bold will feature Heidi Soons on harp.
Admission is $12 adults, $10 seniors and children under 10 free. Tickets are available at the door.
RICHFORD--The Arvin A. Brown Library Mother's Day Raffle could well give you and the Library an excellent gift with prizes donated by local artists including a gift certificate from the Winterberry Shop, a pink purse, handwoven dishtowels, a handmade table quilt or wallhanging, Dishing Up Vermont, a slate painting by Huguette Lambert, a giclee print, Lingering, by Charlotte Rosshandler, and much more. ST. ALBANS--The St. Albans Free Library will host Teen Craft on Tuesday, May 8, at 4 - 7 p.m. The project this week includes all the supplies needed to make a bouquet of duct tape flowers, just in time for Mother's Day. Ages ten and up.
Sculptor John Brickels of Essex Junction creates stoneware falling barn sculptures, tittering urban row houses, and collapsed rust-belt factories in a search for entropy.
