If you're going to San Francisco
You're gonna meet Corliss Blakely in plaid.SAN FRANCISCO--Vermont artist Corliss Blakely of St. Albans will paint on her iPad in Booth 952 on the main floor of MacWorld/iWorld starting today and continuing through February 2. She probably won't wear any plaid.
If you swear by your "I" device or belong to the Cult of Mac, the trade show with your name in the title has taken over Moscone Center West. There will be new product announcements, more than 60 tech talks, live music, film festivals, art showcases and more. Hundreds of exhibitors and developers have taken over Expo Hall to showcase the latest products and apps for Macs, iPhones, and iPads. The LIVE Zone brings the technology to life in an interactive, dynamic, experiential exhibit of iOS and OS X products and technologies. (iOS and OS X are the operating systems for the iPhone and its brethern and for the Mac computers respectively.)
Ms. Blakely will represent Lucky Clan ArtStudio, a professional drawing and painting application for the iPad and iPhone. It offers 15 tools including a pencil, spray, dots, eraser, smudge, bucket fill, gradient, and text, as well as 300 high quality brushes, dodge/burn capability, multiple layers and more.
"I worked with [developer Sylwester Los] in Poland" to hone the application, she said, and "wrote the [user] manual for ArtStudio2.
"I wake up in the morning and haven't had my coffee and he's already texting me halfway through the day. We've worked together for 4 years."
Lucky Clan will have a large screen at the booth so people can watch Ms. Blakely work. The artists are not allowed to sell during the show so the iPad paintings she creates there "will be available at my site."
She is also one of just 20 artists from around the world featured in the MacWorld/iWorld mobile digital art show. Of course. She has "tons of cards," 2,000 buttons to hand to visitors, and a custom silk scarf to wear.
"This is the second time I've been to San Francisco and not seen the city," she said. The show simply keeps her too busy.
Speaking of busy, "I'm teaching a lot," she said. She held an iPod residency in Georgia last month and will be in Mount Mansfield and Jericho soon. A school in Utah told her "they can pay my travel and put me up in a hotel so I'll be going out there."
And she is oil painting again. She started "this series of paintings" in 1972. "I've always had this little painting stapled to the wall. I was sitting in my studio sipping coffee and saw that. If I didn't do it now, I never would.
"I turned all my traditional painting over and started up on the 'Forgotten Seeds.' I have about 40 pieces done and want at least 50." She plans to study and paint tropical fruits in Nicaragua starting this spring.

ENOSBURG FALLS--The Artist In Residence Gallery features different artists each month. This month, the spotlight is on Hans Jaensch, Patrick Murphy, and Genie Rybicki-Judkins. ART ON THE WALLS
The A.I.R. gallery hosts a free meet-the-artists reception with refreshments on Sunday from 1 - 4 p.m. The exhibit continues through the end of February.
The Artist in Residence art cooperative features paintings, fiber arts, stained glass, sculpture, lamps, pottery, folk art boxes, scarves, hats and more by 45 Franklin County and surrounding area artists. It is owned and operated by the artists and sponsors. The gallery, located at 321 Main Street, is open Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. plus the first Sunday of each month, noon to 5 p.m.
BURLINGTON--35 venues will stay open late for the First Friday Art Walk. Nineteen have special events planned and all have new art to check out.
From the waterfront to the South End Arts District to Downtown, you'll find a gallery's first anniversary, a creative competition, several new work openings, Broken Hearts and Sweet Tarts for Valentine's Day, a new artist studio space, and more.
We don't have 35 venues in any Franklin County municipality but it is time to start cataloging the changing exhibits in stores and restaurants and medical centers and offices around our Towns. Once we know what is there, organizing a local Art Walk will be a breeze.

BURLINGTON--The Young Tradition Showcase takes over Contois Auditorium in City Hall on Saturday from 6 - 9 p.m. as a part of the Burlington Winter Festival. The evening includes a concert, a short contra dance, and a pizza break in between. ON STAGE LIVE
The featured teachers and students work year round on technique and repertoire via private lessons and group sessions. With teacher/student combinations performing, the concert is chock full of surprises.
Admission is by $15 suggested donation. There are no advance tickets, but email for a reservation or more info. A portion of each admission is donated to the Tom Sustic Fund, which supports families with children with life-threatening illnesses.
ST. ALBANS--B.F.A. St. Albans hosts the District Music Festival today and tomorrow with a concert in the B.F.A. Gymnasium tomorrow evening at 7 p.m.
Meg Cossaboom will accompany the District Chorus. "The program features some of my favorite choral pieces (including Blue Skies and Shakespear's Three Madrigals), and some of my favorite students!" she said.
ST. ALBANS--Chow Bella presents Vermont jazz singer Jane Andrä and Mint Julep tomorrow at 7 p.m.
Ms. Andrä performs with the Onion River Jazz Band, Greg Evans Trio, swinging Vermont Big Bans, and the Wild Man Blues Band. Her Mint Julip group brings together a coterie of well known local instrumentalists on violin, clarinet, guitar, drums, and upright bass. Yes, it's a surprise. Her CD, Righteous Woman, is a collection of her original Americana-, blues-, and folk-rock-influenced songs.
The Chow! Cabaret offers live performances by musicians, visual artists, poets, and more. The regular Chow Open Mic Night repeats on Wednesday. Call 802.524.1405, email, or click here for more info.
ST. ALBANS--NWAccess TV takes over the Barlow Street School on Monday and Wednesday evenings for gems of the silver screen, free popcorn and discussions of film technique. Programming continues Wednesday, February 6, with 1928's Docks of New York at 6:30 p.m. FILM
