AROUND THE STATE--The 21st annual Vermont Open Studio Weekend is this Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. The statewide celebration of creativity and the visual arts gives visitors an inside look at Vermont artists and craftspeople actually working in their studios. Some 300 exhibitors are open this year, all right next to the yellow signs dotting the Vermont landscape. 11 are right here. ART ON THE WALLS
In and near Franklin County, members will demonstrate their work on site at the Artist In Residence Gallery in Enosburg Falls. It will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The Morning Light of Pat Burton offers art jewelry, original paintings and prints in Milton but she will be a guest at Greg Drew's studio in Georgia. Barbara Colgrove makes colorful earthenware, mugs, bowls, and tiles some miles past the beaver pond in Enosburg Falls. Handweaver Carol Crawford creates lush chenille scarves, shawls, blankets, and rugs in Bakersfield. personalwoodsmythe Greg Drew offers practical and artistic woodturnings and treasures on Ballard Road in Georgia. Grand Isle Art Works has a unique and eclectic collection of fine art and craft from the Lake Champlain Islands. The Chasworth Pottery and Farm features handcrafted pottery, roving, and handspun yarn by Marcia Hagwood, all on Polly Hubbard Road in Georgia. Joanne Littler's Pine Ledge Fiber Studio has shawls, scarves, rugs, linens, and cards in Fairfax. D.J. Pattullo will have original paintings by Vermont artists in the new Village Frame Shoppe and Gallery location in St. Albans. Sarah Rosedahl's Art is original paintings, watercolor, and mixed media on North Hero. Get Away With Art is Meta Strick's mixed media, dolls, paintings, calligraphy, and ornaments in Sheldon.
Other statewide participants include furniture makers, glass blowers, ironworkers, jewelers, quilters painters, potters, print makers, sculptors, weavers, and wood carvers. Many galleries will host gallery talks and feature special exhibits in conjunction with this event.
Directions to the area studios are available on a free map and online but the easiest way to find these artists remains unchanged. Get somewhere near each studio and follow the yellow signs. Admission is free. During Open Studio Weekend, all sites are open 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. After Open Studio Weekend, please call ahead before visiting.

BURLINGTON--"The mill grinds slowly and yet exceedingly fine," said Gail Salzman, paraphrasing the adage. She spent "lots of time painting this year (that's where the 'fine' comes in), with little time left" for anything else.
Soundings, Ms. Salzman's solo exhibit at Burlington City Arts, has all new work that includes ten big paintings and thirty smaller pieces. A public reception marks the show opening tomorrow evening 5-8 p.m. at the gallery.
Water plays an ongoing role in Ms. Salzman’s work. This new show is a metaphorical investigation of water’s seen and unseen influence on our lives. She uses the liquid to represent the fluidity of time and memory.
The forty new paintings, ranging in size from 14 inches square to 4 feet square will be on exhibit through July 6. The show is sponsored by students and friends of Gail Salzman, and supported in part by an Individual Artist's Grant from the Vermont Arts Endowment Fund.
SHELDON--Summer Music at Grace starts the season with what Will Patton called "the umpteenth annual" Fairwell Reunion Benefit concert at the Grace Church. It is "a wonderful annual gathering of some of Vermont's finest acoustic musicians in a great room for music," he said. SUMMER ARRIVES!
Performers include Michele and Fabe Choiniere, Hannah Beth Crary, Dominique Dodge and Rob Ryan, Bill Drislane and Liz Thompson, Frank Heyburn, Dave Hoke and Latimer Hoke, Ken MacKenzie, Susan Palmer, Laurence Beaudry, Linda Morrison, Mike McCarthy, Jim McGinniss and Andy Sacher, Bob Naess and Cannon Labrie, Keeghan Nolan, Will Patton and Dono Schabner, Doug Perkins, Neil Rossi, and Shady Rill (Tom MacKenzie and Patti Casey). The evening is hosted by performer Mark Sustic.
Connie Warden now of the Inn at Trout River will offer a suggested donation cookout beginning at 6 p.m. Bring a salad, side dish, or dessert to share. There will be free ice cream!
The benefit concert supports the Tom Sustic Scholarship Fund, which provides financial support for young musicians and dancers in Vermont.
The 11th annual Fairwell Reunion concert is presented by Young Tradition Vermont with sponsorship by All Arts Council of Franklin County, Ben & Jerry's, Cosmic Bakery, Foothills Bakery, Messenger Print & Design, People's Trust Company, Summer Music at Grace, and others.
Admission is a $15 suggested donation at the door; there are no advance tickets. Email (note the new address) for reservations.
SWANTON--MVU may have delayed its musical this year but they didn't forget. Singin' in the Rain began with a dress rehearsal in the Trahan Theater last night and opens tonight for four performances through Saturday. There are three evening shows, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7 p.m. and one matinee on Saturday at 2 p.m. ON STAGE LIVE
Set in Hollywood in the waning days of silent movies, the popular musical has a book by the writing team Betty Comden and Adolph Green, lyrics by Arthur Freed, and music by Nacio Herb Brown.
Matthew Stebbins directs and is Production Manager. Danielle Turner is Choral Director and Aron Garceau the Band Director.
Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for students, senior citizens and children. Reserved seating is available. Tickets are available at the high school or click here to order online.
ST. ALBANS--The Musical Methodists is an evening of Methodist Musical heritage in celebration of John Wesley’s Aldersgate experience. Whether you are a a Methodist or just love to sing St. Paul’s United Methodist Church invites everyone to come sing out loud on Friday at 7 p.m. Refreshments will follow.
PLATTSBURGH--The Crete Civic Center hosts the Livin' & Lovin' Country Dance Party as a Memorial Weekend tribute concert and summer kick-off on Saturday starting at 12 noon. The all star cast includes Jamie Lee Thurston plus sets by American Idol finalist Benjamin Bright and special guest Jimmy T Thurston.
Admission is $15 in advance and $25 at the door. Kids age 6 and under get in free but for $5 can get a wristband for all the games and bouncy houses. The $5 will be donated the American Cancer Society. A Race Car donated by Airborne Speedway will be raffled in a silent auction. Proceeds from the stock car auction will be donated to the North Country Cancer Fund.
The Artist in Residence gallery has updated their website.
