Artist John Clarke Olson works primarily in oil with palette knife and is known for his beautiful Vermont barns and rural landscapes. FEATURED ARTIST
The self-taught artist has been drawing and painting since about 1975, working oil on board from photographs in his home studio and on location. (He and his wife travel across northern New England in all four seasons to photograph subjects for him to paint.) "I'm 71 years old," he said, "and hopefully I'll still be painting in 20 years."
The 251 Club of Vermont: exploring the 251 towns and cities of the state is a tradition among Vermonters and visitors. Mr. Olson is recording his visits with a painting from every town in Vermont. He has 245 on the walls.
"I always include buildings in my paintings. The towns I have left are gores and grants that don't have any buildings in them." He says he will have to "interesting" landscapes from those.
His paintings have a realistic-impressionist style and hang in Vermont galleries, in private collections throughout the United States, in the Canadian provinces, and around the world. He is an active member of several Vermont art associations, has exhibited throughout northern New England, and is represented by the Village Frame Shoppe in St. Albans.
Mr. Olson was born in Connecticut and moved to Vermont in 1967 after serving in the military. He lives in Colchester with his wife.

The 150th St. Albans Raid Commemorative Calendar is still available. The Village Frame Shoppe also has the original works used in the finished calendar on exhibit.
ST. ALBANS BAY--Bayside Pavilion presents musician/singer/songwriter Mark Abair & Friends tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Abair, acoustic guitar; Neil Brown, stand up bass; and Brian Fredette, percussion, will perform covers and original music. ON STAGE LIVE

RANDOLPH--The 2013 Summit on the Future of Vermont's Working Landscape will take place at the Vermont Technical College on Tuesday, December 17, from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The Summit will bring farmers, forest products producers, artists, landscapers, entrepreneurs, investors, policy leaders, and other Vermonters, and all who care about the future of Vermont's Working Lands together to learn of the successes of the Working Lands Enterprise Fund and to identify actions to encourage policymakers to continue their efforts. 90 panel members will present ideas of how to continue to strengthen and spur the working lands economy. The day will end with the presentation of the Vermont Council on Rural Development 2013 Community Leadership Award. Click here for more info.
ALBURGH--Tomorrow is Family Movie Night at the Alburgh Public Library; they will screen the film Smurfs 2. The sequel to the 2011 film in which "nice gets naughty" is loosely based on The Smurfs comic-book series. This film was dedicated to Jonathan Winters, who voiced Papa Smurf. The cast also includes Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, George Lopez, Christina Ricci, Jimmy Kimmel, Paul Reubens, Shaquille O'Neal, and Jeff Foxworthy, plus Hank Azaria and Neil Patrick Harris. ST. ALBANS-- The St. Albans Library Writers' Medley takes over the conference room today at 2 p.m. The Medley is a time of fun and sharing for writers and those interested in writing. Call Wanda (802.524.1507) for more info.
Classic Movie Night continues this evening with Holiday Affair at 6 p.m.
The library shows a newsreel, cartoon, and trailer of coming attractions before each weekly movie. All films are shown on the 4' by 6' screen in the upstairs conference room "cinema." Admission is free, along with popcorn and a beverage.
On Classic Readers Tuesday, the Book Group meets in the Library at 7 p.m. to spend an evening with A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.
Gustav Verderber and Rob Servranckx's Sojourns In Nature is having a Holiday Print Sale. Mr. Verderber is an author, professional nature photographer, naturalist, and adjunct professor of environmental science. He lives in the Northeast Kingdom. Also a nature photographer, Mr. Servranckx works as a Functional Manager and Project Manager for Cactus Commerce.
