Cardiac Capers opened with bargain night last night in the BFA Performing Arts Center and continues its run with four performances over four nights, tonight through Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. each night. THE BIG WORLD
The theme It's a Small World will visit different countries in dance and song. "There are really cute numbers and we infuse a lot of comedy," Director Helene Biggie said. "We'll be back in the United States for the finale. It's something we've never done before."
Written, produced, directed, and performed entirely by local talent, Cardiac Capers is the biennial hospital auxiliary fund-raising variety show with singing, dancing, and other performances by about 70 docs, medical staff, and community volunteers. "Jeanne Begnoche is back. We have some wonderful soloists and Vern Colburn who has been with the show since the first in 1980 will be pianist," Ms. Biggie said. "And there is a fantastic Celtic number."
The entire production runs on local talent only.
"Tessie is gone, so we're going to have a tribute to her on Saturday," Ms. Biggie said. Long time performer and supporter Tessie Bushey has danced in every Cardiac Capers. Until now. Ms. Bushey had performed since she was 14, starting with My Name's Ida and I'm Sweet as Apple Cider to being a Can-Can girl. She had a lot of stories.
"We have a great raffle again," Ms. Biggie said, reminding us this is a fun raiser for the NMC Auxiliary. Raffle tickets will be sold at the show. Volunteers will also sell Roses for a Star as a fund-raiser.
Patron tickets cost $20 each and may still be available. This special entitles you to a seat in one of the front rows where you (probably) will not get wet. Admission is $12. Tickets are available now at the hospital in the Auxiliary Gift Shop as well as at Hannafords St. Albans, Food City, Swanton Rexall, the St. Albans Free Library, and at the door. "Tickets are going well. I suggest you get them beforehand," Ms. Biggie said.

ST. ALBANS--Backstreet hosts its annual Halloween Party with Justice on Friday at 9:30 p.m. ON STAGE LIVE
The pre- Halloween Bash is "always a blast in or out of costume." And it will be Scott Guptill's birthday. He's giving prizes for the best costume. Justice has Scott Belisle on bass and backup vocals; Todd Dunn, lead and rhythm guitar; Gary Greeno, lead vocals; Mike Stella, drums; and Mr. Guptill, rhythm guitar and backup vocals.
BURLINGTON--Burlington Violin Shop hosts a Fiddleheads plus an adult workshop with Pascal Gemme on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. until noon. Email Mark Sustic for more info.
ST. ALBANS--Twiggs presents The Breast Night Ever, a benefit concert for the American Cancer Society on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Troy Millette and Isaac French have assembled a line-up of local stars: Iron Rooster, Kyle Stevens, Bethany Connor, Joshua Prior, Sean Casey, and more will perform in the back room

ST. ALBANS--The American Legion Hall hosts the Blue Jean Ball on Saturday at 6 p.m. It's the annual chance to dress up your denim for a casual evening in Paradise.
DJ Bobby Cee will spin the bits for dancing. There will be live and silent auctions and a dinner catered by Bayview. All proceeds benefit Franklin County Home Health Agency.
ENOSBURG--The Opera House at Enosburg Falls presents Big Spike Bluegrass on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Big Spike plays hard-driving traditional bluegrass with Bill Gaston, banjo; tenor and lead singer Michael Santosusso, upright bass; singer/luthier Pete Langdell, guitar; Freeman Corey, fiddle; and baritone and lead singer Neil Rossi, mandolin and fiddle. They emphasize 3- and 4-part harmonies.
Admission is $12 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the Opera House box office.
GEORGIA--Georgia Historical Society presents Carol Ann Jones in a solo concert in the JMMY Center on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
ST. ALBANS--Northwest Access TV presents the second annual Northwest Nightmares Festival with nine short films set to debut at the Welden Theater on Monday at 6:15 p.m. NIGHMARISH
Rooted in Franklin County, the film teams have recorded and edited masterpieces of mayhem, mystery and bloodshed. Films are generally rated PG-13 and are not suitable for young children.
Performers from Roxy’s Dance Studio will again kick off the festivities before the films begin. Dancers ages 12-18 will take over the town in their eerie Halloween costumes in a new dance piece, It is Scary.
Admission is $5 per person. Advance tickets are encouraged since last year's premiere sold out. Tickets can be purchased at the Northwest Access TV Studio and the Welden Theater.

WRITING ABOUT SERIOUS ILLNESS (October 30)--The $10,000 Christopher Doheny Award recognizes excellence in fiction or nonfiction. The award includes publication and promotion of the book in print and audio editions. The award will be presented annually for a manuscript that is in process or completed but not yet published. FAIRFIELD--Sarah Aube has joined the Bent Northrop Memorial Library as the new Librarian. Ms. Aube has Master's Degree in Library Science from Simmons College and a BA in English from Lyndon State College. She worked for Samuel Read Hall Library in Lyndonville as well as MacPhaidin Library in Massachusetts. FRANKLIN COUNTY BOOKSHELF
Saturday is Trunk or Treat time at 5 p.m. at the Library. Come early to set up your vehicle to hand out treats and compete in the trunk decorating contest There will be a bonfire, games, spooky music, and more.
FAIRFAX--The Fairfax Community Library hosts a reading by Vermont Poet Antonia Clark on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. She moderates the online poetry forum, The Waters. Also a medical and science writer, Ms. Clark has taught poetry and fiction writing at community colleges and in adult education programs. She is the author of Smoke and Mirrors and the full-length poetry collection, Chameleon Moon.
This month is Squishy Circuits in the Family Tinker Series on Saturday at 10 a.m. Ages 6 and up can make clay figures that light up with conductive play dough. All materials are provided.
HIGHGATE--The Highgate Public Library will host a Halloween Gala and Open House on Monday at 6 p.m. The spooktacular evening for children of all ages (and even grownups) will have storytelling, games, and crafts.

ST. ALBANS--Tuesday is Crafters' Night Out at the St. Albans Free Library at 6:30 p.m. Grab the current craft you're working on and head to the Library to socialize with other crafters and pick up new skills. Have some extra crafting supplies? Bring them in for the craft exchange.
