ART ON THE WALLS

ST. ALBANS--The Traveled Cup has opened a solo show of national artist Corliss Blakely.
      "I just finished some close ups of squash and onions that I bought at Hudaks, several paintings of Nicaragua, a Vermont doorway," and more, she said.
      Ms. Blakely has a body of work in still life and Vermont landscapes in a classically realist style. She has also gained fame for her iPad paintings and for "the Forgotten Seeds, a Look Within." She is an internationally recognized artist for her work in several mediums, including watercolor, oil, and egg tempera with paintings in collections worldwide. The seventh generation Vermonter lives in St. Albans.

ENOSBURG--The Opera House at Enosburg Falls hosts the annual Friends of the Opera House Craft Fair on Saturday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
      This pre-Thanksgiving fair kicks off the holiday season with a selection of local vendors and community members. Admission is free.

NOVEMBER ART DEADLINES

ART BASEL (November 19)--Art Takes Miami, an arts promotional event, wants artists and photographers to show during Art Basel Miami. Now in its fifth year, the art publication and digital exhibit which reaches 1.2 million viewers worldwide, 32,000 exhibition visitors at SCOPE Art Miami, and offers a $10,000 cash grant to one selected artist. This is a SeeMe project so the entry fee is hidden until after you have registered, created a profile, and uploaded. Click here for more info.

ON STAGE LIVE

MONTGOMERY--The monthly Celebration of Expressive Arts takes over the INN to celebrate their 50th Montgomery area CEA this evening at 7 p.m.
      This month, the featured musician will be Tom Begich from Anchorage. Writer Darren Drevik will read from his newly released novel, Appalachian Trail. Artist Vin Faraci will share his custom made skis with the CEA community.
      Mr. Begich is singer/songwriter known for his acoustic instrumentals, blues and folk rock. He hosted a monthly Songwriter's Showcase in Anchorage and has appeared on XM Radio. His newest albums are the just released CDs, Traveling Through and Bone Collectors.
      Mr. Drevik is Montgomery Center's newest innkeeper at Phineas Swann. He is also the newly-elected president of the Montgomery Area Community Alliance.
      Mr. Faraci owns WhiteRoom Skis where he designs and crafts custom alpine and telemark skis with vertically laminated cores from locally harvested, Vermont hardwoods and exotic wood veneers.
      The local artists, writers and musicians gather to share original and thought provoking work, curated and hosted by Bob and Becca Cummins.

COVENTRY, VT--Parker Pie Wings presents the Nobby Reed Project on Friday at 8 p.m. The restaurant is located on the Newport State Airport where they offer live music most Wednesday and Friday nights.
      Admission is by $5 cover, at the door.

ENOSBURG--Eats of Enosburg restaurant has an evening of live music by the Missisquoi River Band on Saturday with seatings at 6 and 8 p.m. only.
      Pat Murphy, Cindy Weed, and Jim Weed play traditional and original music with strong three-part harmonies and instrumentals on acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, bass. The dinner is in the Spanish style with seven small plates to make a full meal and that encourage both conversation and bluegrass music.

ST. ALBANS--The evening of "vintage eclectic" with the Bluerock Boys at Twiggs was CANCELLED.
      Cliff Crosby on acoustic guitar and vocals and Eric Bushey on electric guitar, tenor, banjo, and vocals bring strong instrumental arrangements, creative improv, and tight harmonies to the stage. Originally formed in the late nineties, the Bluerock Boys power duo has a sound and style that transcends genre as they add their own special twist to everything from classic rock to classic country.

PLAN AHEAD--BFA-St. Albans presents its Fall musical, 110 in the Shade, in a run beginning next Thursday, November 20 through Saturday, November 22, in the BFA Performing Arts Center.
      The musical is based on the 1954 play The Rainmaker.

FRANKLIN COUNTY BOOKSHELF

FAIRFAX--The Fairfax Community Library Fiction Book Club meets this evening at 6:30 p.m. to discuss The Spectator Bird by Vermont writer Wallace Stegner.
      The Penguin Classic features a retired literary agent who is "just killing time until time gets around to killing me."
      On Saturday it is International Games Day at Your Library 9 a.m.-1 p.m. It's easy to stay for the four hour gaming marathon but it may be possible to come for a single roll of the dice. The library will have "many games on hand" and snacks, too.

ST. ALBANS--The St. Albans Free Library hosts the Memory Cafe with Carol Ann Jones on Wednesday at 10 a.m. This monthly meeting for people with dementia or Alzheimer's Disease and their caregivers includes a discussion hour, then Ms. Jones playing familiar standards for an second hour.
      "It's not a public performance" per se, she said. The Library has only a small room but it is a good resource.

ST. ALBANS--Ruff Reading, the St. Albans Free Library read to a dog program, invites children ages five to ten to read to Ella, a 7 pound Yorkie. Children who practice reading aloud gain confidence. It is held on the first and third Monday of each month at 3:30 p.m. to help Ella gain fluency.
      In the Classic Readers Book Group, library patrons will gather for Cry the Beloved Country by South African writer Alan Paton on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.
      The 1948 novel tells the story of a black Anglican priest from a rural town who is searching for his son in Johannesburg. Publisher Bennett Cerf called it one of "only three novels published [that] year that were worth reading..." (The others were The Ides of March, and The Naked and the Dead.)

     The Big Action Performance Ensemble is a dance theater company in Middlebury created by movement artist and filmmaker, Tiffany Rhynard. They have been "subverting normal" since 2008 with art that is daring and provocative. Their site includes info about the troupe, a slightly out of date events calendar, Vimeo samples of their work, a slideshow of performers and performances, sponsors, film, and contact info.
