     Franklin County's arts and music gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. There are also booked and acoustic Open Mic Nights that feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

ART ON THE WALLS

ENOSBURG FALLS--The Artist In Residence Gallery features different artists each month. This month, the spotlight is on woodworkers Jason Brunault of Johnson and Michael Perron of Jeffersonville.
      Mr. Perron, a retired architectural designer, does business as Once Turned. He is a full time turner creating products like kitchen rolling pins, pepper mills, jewelry, kaleidoscopes and rattles. Mr. Brunault runs Jay's Wood Shop VT, making hardwood tables, hall buffets, and coffee tables plus bread and cheese boards, bread knives, wine glass holders and more.
      The A.I.R. gallery hosts a free meet-the-artists reception with refreshments on Sunday from 1 - 4 p.m. The exhibit continues through the end of February.
      The seven-year-old Artist in Residence art cooperative features paintings, fiber arts, stained glass, sculpture, lamps, pottery, folk art boxes, scarves, hats and more by 45 Franklin County and surrounding area artists. It is owned and operated by the artists and sponsors. The gallery, located at 321 Main Street, is open Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. plus the first Sunday of each month, noon to 5 p.m.


ON STAGE LIVE

ST. ALBANS--Twiggs offers Music to Dine By with relaxed music and the arts. They have 6-6-2 in the Dining Room on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
      6-6-2's Greg Martell of Georgia and Ian Robertson of Jeffersonville perform a wide variety of 60s music and will do some Simon and Garfunkel and Neil Young for the first time together for this show.

FEBRUARY ART DEADLINES

ART ON THE REFUGE (Now)--The Missisquoi Wildlife Refuge will host the annual Art on the Refuge exhibit, in conjunction with the Refuge Open House in May. The focus this year will be paintings and photos of the over 200 species of birds that live on or stop at the Refuge. There is a hanging fee which also gives the artist a one-year membership in Friends of the Refuge. (Current members may donate new one-year memberships to a family member or a friend.) There is no sales commission fee.
      The show will have about 20 paintings and 20 photographs selected from the registration forms on a first come, first hung basis.

PUBLIC ART PROPOSALS (January 31)--The City of Somerville, needs a designer/fabricator to design, build, and install a custom seating area and public art on a new plaza. The City will include creative benches and sculptural elements to build on the Square's connection to the arts community. Email or click here for more info.


ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE (February 9)--Photoplace Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont, wants photos "from front stoops to back alleys, the subway to suburbia, small town Main Street and back to Wall Street," to show how "the streets we call home shape us." The juried show will showcase neighborhoods, neighbors, and all that defines them. Entry fee.
      Long-time National Geographic staff photographer Jim Blair is the juror.

LITERATURE AND ART JOURNAL (February 15)--The Columbia College Literary Review wants 2D artwork in any media, including photography, for the 2015 edition. (The submission period for writing is now closed.) No entry fee. Click here for more info.


FRANKLIN COUNTY BOOKSHELF

FAIRFAX--Fairfax Reads Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie at the Fairfax Public Library tomorrow at 6 p.m. Tomorrow is also Pizza and Movie Night. Read the book, then come watch another fairy tale, The Princess Bride.

      Next week is busy with Chess Club at 3 p.m. for those registered and Game Night at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. R.E.A.D. to a dog, a fuzzy, friendly dog on Wednesday at 3:15 - 4:15 p.m. Call or stop in to sign-up for a 15-minute time slot.


HIGHGATE--The Highgate Book Group will meet in the library on Monday at 6 p.m. This month's book is the Promise of a Pencil by Adam Braun. It is the story of how he turned $25 into more than 200 schools around the world.


MONTGOMERY--The Montgomery Town Library wants a part-time library director who would oversee all the library operations. You'll need organization, computer, communication, and people skills and a degree in library science or Vermont library certification or be willing to work toward certification.       Wednesday is also Book-to-Film Evening at 5:45 p.m. in the PSB Room of Montgomery Public Library. The Hundred Foot Journey by Richard C. Morais.
      The discussion and dining group meets the first Wednesdays November through May. Bring a dish to share. Books are available to borrow at the library. Call 802.326.3113 for more info.


RICHFORD--The AA Brown Library features Books for the Day on Saturday at 11 a.m. Snowflakes Up close and personal will show how snowflakes are formed and why each one is unique. Make a glittered snowflake to place in a window at home.


ST. ALBANS--Friday Afternoon Comedies continue at the St. Albans Free Library on Friday at 1 p.m. with Mr Bean's Holiday, a 2007 British film starring Rowan Atkinson, Max Baldry, Emma de Caunes, and Willem Dafoe in which Mr. Bean wins a trip to Cannes.
      The library shows a newsreel, cartoon, and trailer of coming attractions on the big 4' by 6' screen in the upstairs "cinema" before each weekly movie. Admission is free, along with popcorn and a beverage. Call 802.524.1507 for details.
