     Franklin County's arts and music gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. There are also booked and acoustic Open Mic Nights that feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

      This week, we have calls for two great "Business of Arts" events right in Franklin County.

JANUARY-FEBRUARY ART DEADLINES

BREAKING INTO BUSINESS (January 27)--Last chance! The Vermont Arts Council has extended the deadline for this two-day intensive workshop. The program is specifically for artists to develop business and marketing plans. The workshop will be held Saturday and Sunday, February 6 and 7, at Missisquoi Valley Union High School in Highgate. Artists who complete the workshop are eligible to apply for a special grant of $500 to support the implementation of a part of their business or marketing plan. The program is offered once each year and travels throughout the state. The cost is $75 per artist and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. CALL FOR ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE (January 25)--The Carving Studio & Sculpture Center offers Artists in Residence facilities for creating 3-dimensional art for summer 2016. Stipends, housing, and meals are available. Call 802.438.2097, email, or click here for more info.


THREADS: A SAMPLING OF THE FIBER ARTS (February 8)--Annmarie seeks works that reflect the best of contemporary fiber and textile art. Their goal is to include works rooted in traditional materials and methods, as well as those that embrace innovative materials, forms, and processes. Small to large-scale works in fiber and textile media are welcome. Cash awards. DAYTON VISUAL ARTS CENTER's CSA(RT) (February 8)--This juried DVAC call will select six artists will to receive a commission of $1,500 to create an artwork in an edition of 50 for DVAC’s first Community Supported Art project. 75TH REGIONAL EXHIBITION (February 26)--The Arnot Art Museum Exhibition offers $10,000 in cash awards to be distributed among the juror selections for all painting and drawing media, sculpture, graphics, photography, clay, textiles, jewelry, wood or metal work, and mixed media. Artists 18 and older must live in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, or Vermont. Entry fee. STROLLING OF THE HEIFERS (any time)--The Brattleboro event in June gathers foodies, local businesses, and a few arts exhibitors. They have limited vending space available at the Friday Night Street Festival and at the Slow Living Expo which follows the world-famous parade. The standard registration cost includes Supporting Sponsorship.

ART ON THE WALLS

MONTPELIER--The Northern Vermont Artists' Association begins a two-month exhibit at the T.W. Wood Gallery with a gala opening on tonight from 5 -7 p.m. There will plenty of appetizers and NVAA artists.
      The NVAA was founded in Burlington in 1931. Membership is open to all visual artists, working in any medium, who live in the northern half of Vermont. The NVAA is an all-volunteer organization.

IN THE SAC

SWANTON--The Swanton Arts Council and the Swanton Chamber of Commerce will hold an informal seminar, When a Hobby Becomes a Business, at the Swanton Village Complex on Saturday from 10 a.m. - 12 noon.
      Brian Savage will conduct the session and explain how to start a small or micro business that has grown out of a hobby. Topics will include, business structure, business plans, accounting and record keeping, permitting, and marketing.

SOUTH HERO--The Blue Paddle Bistro presents Carol Ann Jones in a solo show inside this evening at 6:30 p.m.
      The Blue Paddle has limited seating and a small bar so call ahead (802.372.4814) for reservations.

MORRISVILLE--Moog's Place has open mic night tonight at 8:30 p.m., county favorites the Starline Rhythm Boys tomorrow at 9 p.m. and more. Click here for more info.


Friday-Saturday
ST. ALBANS--Twiggs presents Owl Stars tomorrow evening and Vern Colburn tickling the ivories on Saturday. Both shows begin at 7 p.m.
      Owl Stars are the married duo of Andrew James and Elizabeth Patterson with a repertoire of bluesy, folk rock originals and covers. Mr. Colburn brings jazz and improv music for listening and dining.

STOWE--Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center presents the Nobby Reed Project in the Peak VTartists Series on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
      Mr. Reed is simply the best blues guitar handler in Vermont. He released his first solo CD to national and local critical acclaim in 1997. Since then the Project has recorded ten CDs and has shared the stage with Blues Traveler, Dickey Betts, James Cotton, Mighty Sam MacLain, John Mayall and the Blues Breakers, Leon Russell, Johnny Winter, Little Feat, and more. He plays his own music his own way.

BURLINGTON--Young Tradition Vermont presents Alash, the traditional Tuvan throat singing, in the New City Galerie on Sunday at 7 p.m.
      Tuvan throat singing is the technique of singing multiple pitches at the same time. Masters of traditional Tuvan instruments as well as the art of throat singing, the Alash trio are deeply committed to traditional Tuvan music and culture. Since traditional music has constantly evolved, the musicians infuse their songs with western elements, creating a unique style that is true to their folk heritage. Tuva itself sits at the southern edge of Siberia, directly north of Mongolia.
      Admission is by $20 suggested donation. Advance reservations are suggested if chair seating is preferred. Email for reservations or more info.


FRANKLIN COUNTY BOOKSHELF

ENOSBURG--The Enosburgh Public Library hosts Coffee and New Books on Friday at 11 a.m. as Kathe presents the week's new arrivals. The Creative Writing Group meets on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. to share and discuss writing from home.


FRANKLIN--The Haston Library has Magic on Tuesday, January 26, at 4 p.m. The Gathering Drop-in Gaming invites all to bring Magic Cards for an afternoon of gaming.


SHELDON--The Sheldon Public Library Book Discussion Group meets Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. for a snack and lively discussion of the NY Times bestseller, The Ocean at the End of the Lane by British writer Neil Gaiman. It is the tale of an unnamed man who returns to his hometown for a funeral and remembers events that began forty years earlier.


ST. ALBANS--The St. Albans Free Library Astronomy Club meets this evening at 6:30 p.m. Stir the Pot, the discussion to get you reading and cooking will meet Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. for foods of the world. Time-Life books are available at the circulation desk.
