Franklin County lost a friend of the arts on Sunday when Lyle John Glidden of Franklin passed away at home. He was 66. LYLE GLIDDEN
Lyle loved live music and recorded music and music on a string. He was an engineer/producer and "really good sound guy" and perfectionist who could play bass guitar. He was there on a beautiful summer afternoon in the early 80s for the Vermont Jazz Festival on the slopes of the Sugarbush Ski Resort when the John Cassel Band opened for headliner Maynard Ferguson Orchestra. He had vivid memories of that great show and thousands of others and he brought that knowledge to all of the arts. Lyle was there at the beginning of the All Arts Council and worked on the idea of AAC Music Productions. He reviewed music for ArtBits and helped recruit artists for the Arts/First Register. And he was the arts council's go to guy for musicians and concert ideas. He could certainly make a (joyful) noise and was around when we needed him.

A graveside service will be held at the Franklin Village Cemetery today at 11 a.m.
SWANTON--Art on the Refuge takes over the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters on Saturday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The exhibit opening coincides with the International Migratory Bird Day Celebration and Refuge Open House. The day will also include birding walks and boat trips early in the morning, and a speaker after lunch that will talk about the research completed on the natural nesting cavities on the Refuge. ART ON THE WALLS
Works in oil, acrylics, watercolor, pen and ink, pastels, photography, fabric, and more are focused on birds found on the refuge. Most are for sale. The exhibit continues during normal office hours through July 22.
SWANTON--The Swanton Arts Council will announce the Emerging Artist Award Scholarship recipient at the MVU Senior Awards Night on Monday starting at 7 p.m. IN THE SAC
The SAC Artist Gathering has taken place every Wednesday in April and May. The last gathering this season is at the Swanton Free Public Library on Wednesday at 6 p.m. All mediums and crafts gather and create each week.

SOUTH HERO--The Blue Paddle Bistro presents Carol Ann Jones in a solo show this evening at 6:30 p.m.
The Blue Paddle has limited seating in the main dining room so call ahead (802.372.4814) for reservations. It may be warm enough to sit outside!

ST. ALBANS--The Twiggs Open Band Night is back with a lineup of 6 half hour slots tonight and every third Thursday at 7 p.m. Next up, Twiggs presents Scott DuBois and Ryan Hanson in the Dining Room on Friday and the Smokey Newfield Project on Saturday. Both shows start at 7 p.m. Singer-songwriter Ryan Hanson and local favorite Missisquoi Slim have been working together for several years and songs are always a surprise. Starting a band was cheaper than therapy or convertibles for the SNP. They bring rich harmonies and varied instrumentation to an eclectic mix of music.

ST. ALBANS--Bark for Life, a benefit for the American Cancer Society, takes place at the Colins Perley Sports & Fitness Complex on Friday with registration beginning at 5pm. A day includes music, Hippy Hounds, games, demos, music, food and drink, and music. And, of course, dogs. Teams or individuals may enter.

ENOSBURG--The Opera House At Enosburg Falls presents Melting Point! a local student rock show on Friday at 7 p.m. The show features the best of the student musicians from the EFHS Rock Show to rock the House.

JEFFERSONVILLE--Martell's at the Red Fox the Nobby Reed Project tonight at 7 p.m. Vermont's own blues trio includes Eric Belrose, percussion, Ray Bushey, bass, and Mr. Reed on lead guitar and vocals.

ENOSBURG--The Opera House At Enosburg Falls will hold auditions for Li'l Abner this evening at 6 p.m. and on Sunday at 1 p.m. CALL FOR THESPIANS
The show has something for everyone: Singing, dancing, comedy, politics, and down home fun. "I have started working on scene by scene staging" Kathleen Hoffman said. "It is so exciting."
Li'l Abner will be performed at the Opera House the last weekend in July.
2016 TOP 40 (May 23)--The LACDA international juried competition calls for all styles of artwork including photography using digital processes. 2016 CALVIN PRIZE (May 27)--The Young Writers Project suggests this essay contest with the theme, "What are the Privileges and Responsibilities of Citizenship?" Vermont's Coolidge Foundation Calvin Prize for Vermont Youth is for writers aged 19 years and younger currently living in or attending school in the state of Vermont. Essays must be shorter than 800 words and may have been previously submitted as a school assignment or a new piece altogether. Click here for an entry and more info.
CREATIVE REUSE AND SUSTAINABILITY (May 31)--The inaugural Re:NEW Festival seeks project proposals. The celebration of creative reuse, transformation, and sustainability, will take place in Pittsburgh, PA. Open to all U.S. artists and performers working with the festival themes. No entry fee. COLOR (June 2)--The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC, pronounced bee-wack) show offers $3,000 in cash prizes and welcomes really huge work for this juried show in their enourmous gallery. After 25 years of its Arts and Entertainment column, the St. Albans Messenger will now run just one weekend calendar on Thursdays. "We're no longer going to do the arts separately," editor Michelle Monroe said. Instead, they will incorporate it with the other events. CH-CH-CHANGES
"With the change, we'll no longer have a separate arts column," she said.
