WATERBURY--2017 is the 17th year of the Waterbury Arts Fest, an outdoor art sale set up along Stowe Street and Bidwell Lane; the streets are closed to vehicles. The WAF has issued a call for fine art painting, pottery, fiber art, weaving, glasswork, baskets, jewelry, woodwork and sculpture, and more. Artwork must be made in New England or New York state. Artist applications are due March 17. The event serves as the main fundraiser each year for Revitalizing Waterbury. (A BAD) CALL FOR ARTISTS
This sounds like a good deal. It's a long-running program with a history of sales. Booth fees are reasonable. But they also charge artist vendors a "submission fee" on top of the booth fee for the opportunity to maybe get charged the booth fee to set up an exhibit.
"The total cost for a vendor to participate is $60 (application fee included) which is incredibly cheap compared to many arts events in our area" Executive Director Karen Nevin told me by email.
Do they charge their student musicians or the dancers from Green Mountain Performing Arts, or the magicians (all of whom I hope they pay) for the opportunity to apply to perform?
Do they charge their potential food vendors for the opportunity then to pay again to rent street space to sell pretzels or sausages or falafel?
Do they charge their potential trinket vendors for the opportunity then to pay again to rent street space to sell comic books or glowsticks?
"Of course, artists are then able to make up that cost with the sale of their art," Ms. Nevin said. "All of our performers are paid well as we select them outside of an application process."
Businesses in Waterbury village come together for two days in the summer to make whoopee with the arts; the event has a block party, more than 100 artist booths, music, food, activities and fun.
I like the Waterbury Arts Fest but I don't like the double fee; perhaps artists and other fairgoers should suggest a single fee structure when they register or attend. After all, the other "vendors" don't pay an application fee on top of the booth fee.
ST. ALBANS--The Artist In Residence Gallery features different artists each month. This month, the spotlight is on Cathy Bohannon's Gourd Creations by Bopeter, the decorative concrete of Mike Byers, and the painted carvings of Terry Rice. ART ON THE WALLS
The A.I.R. gallery hosts a free meet-the-artists reception with refreshments and a raffle today 4 - 7 p.m. The exhibit continues through the end of March.
The Artist in Residence art cooperative features paintings, fiber arts, stained glass, sculpture, lamps, pottery, folk art boxes, scarves, hats and more by 40 Franklin County and surrounding area artists. It is owned and operated by the artists and sponsors. The gallery, newly reopened at 10 South Main Street, is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Click here for more info.
ST ALBANS--The Northwestern Medical Center Gallery hosts the Tuesday Morning Gang this month. The students of Kathleen Berry Bergeron meet at the senior center on Tuesdays, some for 10 years or more. The show includes about 14 pieces by Millie Boyd, Ms. Bergeron, Diane Lareau, Dollie MacNeill, Patrick Melling, Bevery Montiel, and Linda Wirts. The focus will be Spring (yay!).
The show continues through the end of March.
Thursday ON STAGE LIVE
ESSEX JUNCTION--On Tap offers Blues Night with the Nobby Reed Project tonight at 7 p.m. Vermont's own blues trio includes Eric Belrose, percussion, Ray Bushey, bass, and Mr. Reed on lead guitar and vocals.

ST. ALBANS--Tell It At Twiggs brings some of the best story telling in Vermont to Twiggs on Thursday at 7 p.m. The $5 cover charge benefits St. Albans Community Arts.

BURLINGTON--The Burlington Irish Heritage Festival began this week and continues through March 24 with Irish lessons, discussions about Irish history, genealogy (everyone is Irish on March 17) and music every day. Many events are free or by donation.

ST. ALBANS--Friday is Karaoke Night at 14th Star, Hosted by Digital Octopus Karaoke & Entertainment, starting at 6:30 p.m.
"Sing Your Heart Out." The Karaoke Night fan favorite will win two tickets to the sold out Tribute to T-Hip show next week.
SOUTH HERO--Snow Farm Vineyard features singer/songwriter Carol Ann Jones for Wine Down Friday on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

AROUND THE STATE--Tuesday is Town Meeting in most Franklin County Towns. TOWN MEETING
In addition to asking voters to move general fund balances they didn't have to spend last year to their Emergency Reserve Funds and examining new fire or highway trucks, most Towns will discuss or vote on the arts and culture of the community from concerts in parks to new books (and park passes) in the libraries. It's a good place to be. And lunch may include marshmallow Jello™.
