Louise Bellows

ARRESTING WOLVES AND VIEWS

Born in Fairfax, Louise Bellows has known since elementary school that "art was the subject I wanted to pursue" but real life has a way of interfering with art. World War II ended and many women left the workforce. After studying for one year at Moore Institute of Art in Philadelphia, she found herself a married homemaker in Enosburg Falls.
"Now I have a job again, and one that I love," she said. "I go into my studio everyday and paint." Louise has returned to Fairfax where she also has two daughters and three grandchildren not too far away.
"I look out my window each day at the spectacular view of Mount Mansfield," she said. Louise uses oils or pastels to arrest that view in every season. Her detailed landscapes are vivid without overpainting. Her well-known paintings of wolves are alive, active, mysterious, and friendly. Her work has been featured at Jay Peak, the Northwest Medical Center, the Inn at Essex, and in the Rotary Home Show-AAC Gallery.
Artists in Franklin County have limitless landscapes and people right outside the window, but they also study the craft. Louise invited several friends to join Stan Mark Wright of Stowe who held workshops in her Enosburg basement. She has also studied with Francis Colburn and has taken classes at CCV.
She is now studying portraits, a new direction for her art, and pursuing a spare time hobby: cooking. "When I'm not painting, I like to head down to the kitchen to bake or to try new recipes," she said.
