The Big Four (rainy) Music Weeks of the summer draws to a close with the final Summer Sounds concert this season, plus a Concert By the Commons concert, and a concert in St. Albans.
The headline act always closes the show. The 2008 season concludes as O.C. McCuin & Sons presents Tammy Fletcher and Mountain Girl in the Summer Sounds concert in Highgate Municipal Park on Sunday evening. Tom Messner says it will be dry. There were no Summer Sounds concerts in St. Albans City in 2008. LEADING RIGHT TO THE LAST
Tammy Fletcher is best-known as Vermont's Soul Queen but she has enthralled audiences from the Apollo Theater in Harlem to the Gaiety Theater in Dublin because she sings. My, oh my does she sing. She has sung in Reykjavik and Highgate. She has sold out the Flynn while fronting the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. She sang the National Anthem at Fenway Park. Deeply rooted in our American traditions, Ms. Fletcher sings gospel and rock, opera and country, and the blues.
Mountain Girl is a raw to the roots Americana band. The band includes Ms. Fletcher on vocals; Dakota Foley, mandolin; Bob Hill on guitar; Jim Pitman on dobro/steel, Simon Plumpton on drums; and Stacy Starkweather on bass.
"We'll do rockin' bluegrassy country alternative folk," Ms. Fletcher said of the Summer Sounds event. This concert marks the second time she has finished the season for us.
The Summer Sounds concerts are sponsored by the Town of Highgate and the All Arts Council, and underwritten by Chevalier Drilling, Desorcie's Market, Drummac Septic Service, O. C. McCuin & Sons, Ray's Extrusion Dies & Tubing, Scotty's Taxi, and Stewart Title Guaranty Company.
The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont. The concerts are always on Sunday evenings, always at 7 p.m., always in Highgate Municipal Park, and always free. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair as you settle in to enjoy outdoor family music and festivities. The rain site is the Highgate United Methodist Church.
HIGHGATE--Buy local! The Highgate Farm Market has fresh fruits and vegetables, some craft items, and even bakery sweets, all in the Municipal Park on Fridays, 3-6 p.m. and acts as the host on Sundays at Summer Sounds, 6-8 p.m.
SOUTH Hero--Snowfarm Vineyard presents Jim Branca and the Mystic Mojo Trio with surprise guests outdoors on the grounds this evening at 6:30 p.m. ON STAGE LIVE
"Ahhhh yes, summertime... 'and the livin' is easy...'," Mr. Branca said. "It should be a rare, inspired evening indeed." Click here for more info.
ESSEX JUNCTION--The Lincoln Inn Pub and Grill presents the Nobby Reed Project tonight from 7-10 p.m. The Project, with Eric Belrose, percussion, Ray Bushey, bass, and Vermont's most popular power-blues man Nobby Reed on lead guitar and vocals, plays the best original music in the soul-shakin'-electric Texas and Chicago blues styles with a Vermont touch.

BURLINGTON--The Intervale Center Summer Concert Series and the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association present an ensemble concert at the Calkins Community Barn (at the Intervale Center along the Winooski River) this evening at 6:30 pm. The concert program will feature an array of solo and ensemble performances presented by past and present VYOA musicians and their friends. The event benefits the Sara London-Hinman Scholarship Fund.
Pack a picnic and expect an evening of fantastic music presented by some of Vermont’s finest young musicians. And come early for a lively discussion with Local First Vermont, Central Vermont Localvores and the Burlington Electric Department about building a robust independent business sector, putting local food on local tables, and using local energy sources. The discussion starts at 5:30 p.m.

VERGENNES--Events for Tom presents Brian Conway and Brendan Dolan, two of the most respected and renowned Irish American musicians in North America, in concert at the Park Squeeze tomorrow evening at 8 p.m.
The Park Squeeze is at 161 Main Street. Admission is $15 at the door. Seating is limited and reservations are recommended.
Mr. Conway will also present an Irish fiddle workshop for intermediate to advanced players, at the Burlington Violin Shop on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. The workshop will focus on Irish style and repertoire. A $20 fee is payable the morning of the workshop. Reservations are limited to the first 10 who sign up.

The concert is a presentation of Events for Tom, Young Tradition and the Champlain Valley Folk Festival with support from Vermont Violins/ Burlington Violin Shop, the Park Squeeze and others. It is the 107th event in the series. Proceeds from the concert benefit the Tom Sustic Fund, which supports families with children with cancer.
MONTGOMERY CENTER--The popular and eclectic Concerts By The Common series presents the Diller Quaile String Quartet on Saturday at 8 p.m.
The string quartet performs new works as well as the classic quartet literature and has traveled world-wide. In honor of Leroy Anderson's centennial birthday celebration, the Montgomery concert will include quartet arrangements of the popular American composer along with works of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven.
The Diller-Quaile School of Music on the Upper East Side of Manhattan teaches music "in a way that develops the innate musicality in each student and inspires participation for a lifetime." The school was founded in 1920 by pianists Angela Diller and Elizabeth Quaile. They have 1,200 students in their Early Childhood, Instrumental and Vocal, Adult, Teacher Training, and Outreach Departments.
This concert begins at 7 p.m. in Pratt Hall, opposite the Black Lantern Inn. Admission is $12 or $10 for Montgomery Historical Society members. Tickets are on sale now. Call 802.326.4528 for information.
RUTLAND--The Long Trail Festival features the Starline Rhythm Boys, Gypsy Reel, Rick Redington, the Proctor Connection, 35th Parallel, Wiley Dobbs, George's Back Pocket, the Jake Geppert Band, Gutterpup, the Phil Henry Band, the Dirtminers and more, with jamming all weekend, from 7 p.m. Friday through late Sunday, at the State Fairgrounds. JEFFERSONVILLE--The Village Tavern hosts Open Mic at 8 p.m. on Thursdays.
FAIRFAX--The regular Music Session continues Saturday with acoustic instrumentalists playing traditional songs at the Foothills Bakery, 1-4:30 p.m. Admission is free by donation.

ST ALBANS--The St. Albans Concert Series presents a Family BBQ, Zerphy the Clown, and the Chevalier Band in concert in the Edric A. Loomis Memorial Band Shell, all beginning at 4:30 p.m.
