Summer Sounds didn't just get rained out. Contrary to popular belief, no strangers paddled through Highgate Municipal Park looking for pairs of aminals Sunday night. But they might have. As much as an inch of rain fell on the park in less than 40 minutes. The band had all of their gear out and placed; we had assembled the canopy frame and started stretching the canvas when I felt the first raindrops. That advance warning was good for about a minute of frantic tent building. Between the rain and lightning, the (wooden) drums were soaked and the snakes were all filled with water. We had to cancel the concert DROWNED OUT
The good news is that Dark Horse will return on a (presumably) dry Sunday in two weeks, August 28.
The All Arts Council presents The Constitution Brass Quintet in the Summer Sounds concert in Highgate Municipal Park on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. CONSTITUTIONALLY UNCHALLENGED
"We have a lighthearted 'Summer in the Park' brass band program," said Jo Anne Edwards of a concert that will highlight American popular music from the mid-19th to the mid-20th Century. With Dixieland jazz, Broadway show tunes, Civil War music, and Sousa marches, the concert will feature soloists Bill Keck and Jo Anne Edwards playing literally from the Renaissance to ragtime and beyond.
The Constitution Brass was founded in 1983 in Connecticut and played its first Vermont concert in the Summer Sounds series in Highgate. The quintet includes Jo Anne Edwards, trumpet, Chris Rivers, trumpet, Lori Salimando, trombone, Bill Keck, tuba, and Joy Worland, horn. Their repertoire spans 400 years of popular music (remember, what we consider a "classic" today was popular music when new) and includes Vermont composer Gwyneth Walker's Shaker Tunes for Brass Quintet. The ensemble is noted for its full family entertainment and historical commentary.
These "fine musicians also understand the value of entertaining their audiences. Their concerts are well crafted, well played and, quite simply, a lot of fun!" Ms. Walker said.
Just before the concert, stop by for the Kids Culinary Camp-Summer Sounds Social in the Park starting at 6 p.m. The social hour is a chance to visit with friends and enjoy a full-on barbecue, cool drinks, and unbelievable desserts on a summer night.
The Summer Sounds concerts are sponsored by the Town of Highgate and the All Arts Council, and underwritten by Chevalier Drilling, Drummac Septic Service, O. C. McCuin and Sons, and Ray's Extrusion Dies and Tubing.
The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont. The concerts are always on Sunday evenings, always at 7 p.m., always in Highgate Municipal Park, and always free. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair as you settle in to enjoy outdoor family music and festivities. There is no rain in the forecast but the rain site is the Highgate United Methodist Church.

St. Albans--The One Federal Restaurant and Lounge Thursday Night Summer Concert Series presents Justice in their debut this evening at 7 p.m.
The band includes Chris Fleury, lead vocals and drums; Scott Belisle on bass and backup vocals; Todd Dunn, lead and rhythm guitar; and Scott Guptill, rhythm guitar and backup vocals.
"Come get some of the best food in the area and enjoy some great music in their courtyard," Mr. Guptill said. Admission is free.
BARTON--Orleans County Fair presents the Keeghan Nolan Band on the Main Stage this evening at 7 p.m.
The Fair started yesterday with the World Record Cadillac Parade. It has arts and crafts in the Exhibit Hall and more live music in the Entertainment Tent as well as afternoon and evening shows at the Beer Tent.
ST. ALBANS--JW Ryan's presents Conscious Roots live tomorrow evening at 9:30 p.m. The roots reggae band plays a mix of original music that blends Afro-beat rhythms, ska, jazz, and rock. The band includes Charles Hungerford, vocals, rhythm guitar, clarinet; Danny Ries, bass, mandolin; Jeff Kenyon, lead guitar; Adam Dunsmore, trumpet, percussion, backing vocals; and drummer Jason Corbiere.
ESSEX JUNCTION--On Tap (formerly the Lincoln Inn) presents Summer Sounds favorite Jenni Johnson and the Junketeers this evening at 7 p.m.

SHELDON--Hungrytown returns to the popular Summer Music at Grace on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to celebrate the release of their second album, Any Forgotten Thing.
The husband-wife duo of Ken Anderson and Rebecca Hall bring versatile instrumentals and delicious, quirky harmonies to the stage. Their music is evocative and original. The songwriting, recording, and performing team has a self-deprecating humor reminiscent of George and Gracie.

Tonight is also Classic Movie Night at the St. Albans Free Library at 6 p.m. Directed by Phil Karlson, Kansas City Confidential follows an ex-con trying to go straight who is framed for a million dollar armored car robbery and must go to Mexico in order to unmask the real culprits.
The library shows a newsreel, cartoon, and trailer of coming attractions before each weekly movie. All films are shown on the 4' by 6' screen in the upstairs conference room "cinema." Admission is free, along with popcorn and beverage.
