STUFF YOU SHOULDN'T MISS

      ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column.


      Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at various restaurants around Franklin County throughout the week, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
     These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

ON STAGE LIVE

SOUTH HERO--The Blue Paddle Bistro presents Carol Ann Jones in a solo show tonight at 6 p.m. The Bistro's Thursday Night Music series spotlights a line-up of Vermont musicians.

ST. ALBANS--St. Paul's Methodist Church presents Heliand Consort in Concert on Wednesday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. as part of their spring tour. The program, Classics for Piano and Winds, features Mozart's Quintet for Piano and Winds; Ludwig Thuille's Sextet for Piano and Wind Quintet, and Klughardt's Quintet for Winds with special guest Patricia Evans, principal horn, Winnipeg Symphony.
      The Heliand Consort first took shape when Elisabeth LeBlanc of St. Albans and Rachael Elliott of Lyndon sat side-by-side in the Vermont Youth Orchestra. They connected with founding pianist Annemieke Spoelstra to form a trio to perform live chamber music throughout the state. The name Heliand is Old Saxon for "healing power." The Consort grew to include Berta Frank, flute, Katie Oprea, oboe, Ms. Leblanc, clarinet, and Ms. Elliot, bassoon. Ms. Frank and LeBlanc are now VYOA staff members and Ms. Elliott is the VYO Endangered Instruments instructor.
      The Consort will also play Live on VPR Classical with Walter Parker on Wednesday at 11 a.m. as well as in St. Johnsbury, Montpelier, and Middlebury.
      Admission is by suggested donation of $20 for adults or $15 for students and seniors.

BURLINGTON--The UVM Folk Music Club hosts a Shape Note Sing in Ira Allen Chapel at UVM every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Mason Gohl holds pitching/leading/sight-reading lessons before the Sing at 6 p.m. Check for occasional changes in time, date and location. Email for more info.

MAY-JUNE ART DEADLINES

LIBRARY EXHIBITS (Now)--Bent Northrop Memorial Library in Fairfax hosts a new exhibit with this call for pieces to be viewed by all audiences. Works will be displayed for four to six weeks. Email Lori Niederer at email for more info.
      Swanton Free Public Library has a "tabletop" display of two- or three-dimensional work in the reading room. Works there are displayed for four weeks. Call Marilyn Barney (802.868.7656) for more info.


ALL DIGITAL ARTISTS (May 27)--The Village Frame Shoppe & Gallery has a new exhibition for artists "creating works in a digital environment." That includes computer generation, iPad, and iPhone works but is not a show for digital photography. Pieces are limited to 20x26 inches framed. Work must be dropped off Friday or Saturday, June 1 - 2, between 1 - 4 p.m.

NEW ENGLAND JURIED ART EXHIBITION (June 1)--The Brattleboro Museum and Art Center showcase for established, mid-career, and emerging artists in all media will select 12 artists to each show a curated body of work or an installation. NEBi 2012 is open to artists who live in any of the six New England states. Entry fee. Click here for details and an entry form.


OFF THE WALL (June 8)--Studio Place Arts in Barre has called for a main gallery show of bold, sculptural works made from wire, paper, fabric, stainless steel, fiber, duct tape and more. Works should hang from the ceilings and walls, or stand on pedestals around the floor. They want a mix of abstract forms and figures that emphasize motion, action, and gesture. (SPA also has an annual stone sculpture show; this exhibit invites 3-D work from artists in other media.) Entry fee. Call 802.479.7069, email, or click here for more info.


FRANKLIN COUNTY BOOKSHELF

ST. ALBANS--The St. Albans Free Library Youth Room has two new iPads for use in the library by patrons 16 and under. Located near the Youth Desk each has a half hour time limit during peak times for playing games (educational and otherwise) and browsing the internet.
      Mornings, Muffins & Mysteries this morning at 10:30 a.m. takes on The Cinnamon Kiss by prolific writer Walter Mosley. This book follows his series character Easy Rawlins past dead bodies scandals into a look at the burgeoning counterculture in Berkeley and Haight-Ashbury.
      The Writers' Medley today at 2 p.m. is a time of fun and sharing for those interested in writing. Call Wanda (802.524.1507) for details.
      PBS Kids Go! Writers Contest Showcase this evening at 6:30 p.m. welcomes the participants as they share the stories they wrote for Vermont Public Television.


FAIRFIELD--Kelly Christie begins a course in conversational Spanish at Bent Northrup Memorial Library on Monday, May 21. This six week session is open to all basic abilities and will be held in the evenings from 6:30-8 p.m. Call 802.827.3945 or click here for more info. The course will cost $50.

AUDITION CALL

AUDITIONS FOR ROOFERS. AND FIDDLERS--The Opera House at Enosburg Falls will hold a workshop and auditions for ages 11 and up for their summer musical, Fiddler on the Roof, at the Enosburg Elementary School.
      The audition song is Sunrise Sunset. On Sunday, May 20th, there will be a workshop to work on the audition song at 4:30 p.m. Auditions will be held at 5 - 7:30 p.m. On Monday, May 21, the workshop will be held at 5:30 and the auditions from 6 - 9 p.m.
