STILL SUMMER

SHELDON--Summer continues with Summer Music at Grace: Baroque & Beyond with Erin Grainger, Katie Oprea, and George Cummings on Friday at 7 p.m. The program features J.S. Bach and C.P.E. Bach, Albioni, Beethoven, Vaughn Williams, and more. Download the complete program here.
      Ms. Oprea began studying the oboe with her father in 1981. She has appeared as a soloist for the Vermont Youth Orchestra and as the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and studied under Cesar Ognibene at the Conservatoire National de Region de Lyon in France. She was principal oboe for the Romanian State Opera of Timisoara, the Burlington Chamber Orchestra, and the Opera Company of Middlebury. She plays for the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and the Vermont Mozart Festival and us a member of the Heliand Consort.
      Mezzo-soprano Erin Grainger is an opera and concert soloist and has appeared with the Middlebury Bach Festival, Burlington Chamber Orchestra, Middlebury Community Chorus, and as a member of Counterpoint. She teaches voice at Johnson State College and is the Choral Director at First Congregational Church of St. Albans. She lives in Sheldon.
      Mr. Cummings studied piano, pipe organ and voice at St. Michael's Choir School, in Toronto. He became rehearsal pianist at the Savoy Society of McGill University and has accompanied Ms. Oprea in Montreal and in Knowlton, Quebec. He is the organist at Ste Therese de l'Enfant Jesus parish in Cowansville and was the pianist for The Pirates of Penzance at the Opera House. He lives in Knowlton.

CELEBRATE THE HARVEST

ENOSBURG Falls--Enosburg's annual Harvest Festival presents the Missisquoi River Band plus a mysterious, super secret fiddler in and around Lincoln Park on Saturday from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
      Arts, crafts, and antiques meet live music, demonstrations in chainsaw carving and forging, as well as antiques, a chicken BBQ, entertainment, a farmers market, kids activities, wagon rides, wine tastings, and more at this annual family-friendly fest. There sword swallowers will probably stay home. Admission is free.


ART ON THE WALLS

BURLINGTON--UVM/Continuing Education will host an exhibit of paintings by Linda Wirts of Swanton starting with an opening reception on Wednesday from 5 - 6:30 p.m. at 322 South Prospect Street.
      Ms. Wirts paints "with a lot of color." Her paintings are mostly landscapes.


QUECHEE--The Vermont Institute of Natural Science holds its second annual en Plein Air Painting Festival at the VINS Nature Center beginning Saturday and continuing through September 23. An Art Exhibit and sale will be staged then and continue through September 28. Opening Artist Reception
      En Plein Air is "in the open air," painting outdoors in natural light. Artists and art lovers will work in the beauty and diversity of the Ottauquechee River and the Connecticut River watershed. Click here for more info.


IN THE SAC

SWANTON--The Swanton Arts Council will hold the first meeting of the SAC Writer's Group in the Swanton Public Library on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
      The gathering is a chance to share what everyone is doing and planning, get the group off the ground, and consider tackling Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month) in November. Call Becky Rupp (802.733.7471) or email for more info.


ON STAGE LIVE

Thursday
ST. ALBANS--The Vermont Humanities Council and the St. Albans Museum present Champlain College professor Michael Lange for the Many Meanings of Maple in the Bliss Room on Thursday at 7 p.m.
      Maple drives Vermont's economy, ecology, and heritage. Professor Lange will discuss what sugaring really means to Vermont, why maple has become so important to Vermont's identity, and how it helps shape who we are as Vermonters, all learned from his research among sugar makers all over the state.

ESSEX JUNCTION--On Tap offers Summer Sounds favorites Jenni Johnson and the Jazz Junketeers tonight at 7 p.m. and IncaHOOTS Friday evening from 9 p.m. - closing.

Friday-Saturday
ST. ALBANS--The Twiggs Comedy For A Cause series continues on the Main Stage Friday evening at 7 p.m. The evening will raise money to support MAHA.
      Colin Ryan of A Stand Up Life produces the show. Admission is $20. There are just 75 seats available at the restaurant. Call Karen (802.868.3957) or email for tickets. Make dinner reservations prior to the show since only drinks, appetizers, and desserts will be served during the show.

Saturday FAIRFAX--The First ever Steeple Market Brewfest pours at J & L Field on Saturday with two tasting sessions, at 12 - 3 p.m. and at 5 - 8 p.m. They plan "countless brews," excellent food, and live music.
      Admission is $35 per person for one session or the other. The ticket includes entry, 15 tasting tickets, and a commemorative beer glass. The proceeds benefit the Fairfax Fire Department and Survivorship NOW Vermont.


ENOSBURG--The Opera House at Enosburg Falls presents O'hAnleigh on Saturday at 7 p.m.
      Half-way to St. Patrick's Day, this Irish-American band from Middlebury will celebrate the joys of Ireland. There will be a cash bar.
      Admission is $10 per person. Click here to purchase tickets.


ESSEX JUNCTION--Get some Backstage Justice as the Pub and Restaurant hosts the band's End-of-Summer night on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. They will celebrate "what has been a phenomenal summer for the band," Scott Guptill said.

BURLINGTON--Leunigs Bistro presents the Will Patton Quartet on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.


CREATIVE ECONOMY

WORCESTER, MA--NEFA's 15th Annual Idea Swap takes place in November but the deadline to register is October 4.
      The Idea Swap is an annual event for New England-based nonprofit cultural organizations to network and share tour project ideas that may qualify for funding from NEFA's Expeditions grant program. Click here to register and for more info.


FRANKLIN COUNTY BOOKSHELF

SWANTON--The Swanton Free Public Library presents Agatha Christie: Creator of Miss Jane Marple and Hercule Poirot in a living history performance by Helene Lang this evening at 6 p.m.
      Ms. Christie tells how a typewriter in Torguay spawned over 80 mysteries and created Miss Jane Marple and Hercule Poirot. Ms. Lang takes a walk in her footsteps in England and shows why she was so knowledgeable about poisons, shares some personal information about her family; and why she went to Yorkshire under an assumed name.
