SHOOT THE MOON

      48 Years ago today on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin from Apollo 11 took man's first steps on the Moon. 530 million watched the live global television broadcast.


BIG MUSIC WEEKS

FRANKLIN COUNTY--The Big Music Weeks of Summer begins this week as some of our friends play multiple gigs. Summer Sounds celebrates 27 years of concerts in Highgate with our farthest traveler ever. The Bliss hosts The Power of Music. There are shows in Essex Junction twice, Highgate, Morrisville, four in St. Albans, South Burlington, and Stowe.


SUMMER PUNK AND PROTEST

HIGHGATE--La Quinta Inn & Suites-St Albans, the All Arts Council, and the Town of Highgate continue the 27th year of Summer Sounds concerts at home in Highgate with the David Rosane and the Zookeepers in the free Summer Sounds concert on Sunday evening at 7 p.m.
      Mr. Rosane is a full-time singer-songwriter who hails from Vermont, worked in the Amazon, and moved to Paris but just can't stay away from Vermont. He has conducted research for and taught at Cornell University and is an environmental and social justice advocate but, more, he is a post-punk power-and-protest rocker and songwriter with a multinational consortium of heavyweight musicians. The chimps don't play in the band.
      Just before the concert, Summer Sounds Social in the Park starting at 6 p.m. The special Intermission and Social event will introduce a very special young performer and is a chance to visit with friends and eat hearty.
      The Summer Sounds concerts are sponsored by the Town of Highgate and the All Arts Council, and underwritten by Chevalier Drilling Co. Inc, Desorcie's Market, Drummac Septic Service, La Quinta Inn and Suites of St. Albans, O. C. McCuin and Sons, and Ray's Extrusion Dies and Tubing.
      The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont. The concerts are always on Sunday evenings, always at 7 p.m., always in Highgate Municipal Park, and always free. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair for the outdoor family music and festivities. MUSIC POWER

ST. ALBANS--The St Albans Museum presents The Power of Music with Carol Ann Jones in the Bliss Room on Saturday at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The powerful one woman performance of storytelling and music will help support Music & Memory.
      "As a Christmas present, in 2010, my friend Michelle gave me a journal," Ms. Jones said. "The summer of 2011 I started working at an area nursing home. Soon after I started working there, I sang for a man in his dying days. It was a very moving experience and I decided to record it in the journal. Over the next five years I recorded over 180 people that I sang for in their dying days. There are many amazing people in my journal. I also recorded their favorite songs that I would sing for them."
      The show shares those stories and songs. There will be heartwarming moments and music and stories. Ms. Jones is also collecting used iPod touch devices for the Music & Memory program.

ART ON THE WALLS

ST. ALBANS--The Village Frame Shoppe hosts the Northern Vermont Artists Association Summer show, running from now through August 5.
      The NVAA was founded in Burlington in 1931. Membership is open to all visual artists, working in any medium, who live in the northern half of Vermont. The NVAA is an all-volunteer organization.
      DJ Patullo's Village Frame Shoppe is a museum, art gallery, and frame shop in downtown Saint Albans. Click here for the NVAA history and info and here for more info about the gallery.


MONTGOMERY--The Montgomery Town Library hosts its 9th annual Wine & Cheese Silent Auction Fundraiser in the Phineas Swann Bed & Breakfast on Friday at 6 p.m.
      The auction features the work of talented local artists and craftspeople, donations and gift certificates from area businesses, a Jay Peak Season Pass, and more. Phineas Swann will serve delicious hors d'oeuvres and beverages.

ENOSBURG--It's never too early to start thinking about Christmas as the Opera House at Enosburg Falls hosts its Christmas in July Craft Show on Saturday from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

ST. ALBANS--The Grind Cafe Summer hosts an art workshop on Wednesday at 11 a.m. This week's project will be 3D art, working with clay and wire and August 23 (Summer Painting).

SWANTON--Chalk it up to Art!
      The Swanton Arts Council hosts Sidewalk Chalk Day to fill Swanton with color on Saturday between 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Collect sidewalk chalk for free at the Library.

STOWE--Harrison's Restaurant presents Will Patton country pickin' & singin' with flatpicker Mark Struhsacker this evening at 6 p.m. There will be grins.

ESSEX JUNCTION--On Tap has two Summer Sounds favorites this week. Jenni Johnson and the Jazz Junketeers kick off the festivities tonight at 7 p.m. then IncaHoots returns Friday at 9 p.m.

Thursday-Saturday
ST. ALBANS--The Giggles & Jiggles Show and TNT Comedy Showcase continues on the Main Stage at Twiggs on TNT Comedy Thursday at 7 p.m. Doors at 6:30.
      The show stars Hillary Boone, Seven Daysies Top 5 Funniest Comedians 2017 and Cori Marnellos and is hosted by Dave Anderson. Suzan Ambrose hosts open mic. This is a free show for mature audiences and space fills up quickly; call Twiggs to reserve a table. Make dinner reservations prior to the show since only drinks, appetizers, and desserts will be served during the show.
      Next up, Twiggs presents the American Songbook of Sergio Torres on Thursday, The Duo of John Seiden, and Neil Wright on Friday, and Roy and the Wrecks on Saturday. Shows begin at 7 p.m.

ESSEX JUNCTION--Justice is Going Parking After Dark at Park Place Tavern on Friday at 9:30 p.m.
      "All we need for the mid-summer party need is you and your posse and bam we are having fun."


Saturday
SOUTH BURLINGTON--Higher Ground presents the 7th annual Girls Rock Vermont Showcase in the Showcase Lounge on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Doors at 12 noon.
      Girls Rock VT is dedicated to empowering girls. The show will feature five bands made up of 30 girls ages 8-18. Admission is $5 per person.


ST. ALBANS--14th Star and Shake the Band come together with music, beer, and people to raise money for Camp Ta-Kum-Ta on Saturday at 6 p.m.
      "If you are coming to this event, please bring cash! There will be a small cover charge, raffles, donation opportunities, etc., and all proceeds will go straight to the cause!"


ST. ALBANS--Back Inn Time hosts the Blue Rock Boys -- Eric Bushey and Cliff Crosby -- for Music & More on Saturday at 7 p.m.

ST. ALBANS--The Burrow at the Catalyst Coffee Bar presents Saint Albans singer-songwriter Montana Russell-Greene with Jared Kenyon and Kai Jamil on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. They will perform original and cover songs ranging from folk and pop to punk 'n funk.
      Admission is by $5 suggested donation. It is a sober event; food and drinks are available upstairs.


Wednesday
ST. ALBANS--The Brewster Bros. with Isaac French continue the Downtown Summer Concert Series in the E.A. Loomis Bandshell in Taylor Park on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. 14th Star Brewing and the Traveling Canteen serve food and drink at all of this year's Summer Concerts Series events.
      Admission is free.


SOUTH BURLINGTON--Higher Ground continues Northern Exposure with Kastaway, Khaosity, Italics, and Drive in the Showcase Lounge tonight at 8:30 p.m.
      The series offers an opportunity for up-and-coming Vermont bands to take the stage in the Lounge. Three or more summer Saturdays are dedicated to showcasing the emerging local talent.
      This event is all ages. Admission is $6.


MORRISVILLE--Oxbow Riverfront Park continues the Wednesday Night Live music series with Take Five jazz ensemble on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
      The series continues each week through August 23. The Wednesday farmers market won't be held at the Oxbow this summer, but there will be a rotating mix of food vendors every week and the River Arts' Art Tent will offer fun, creative activities for the community while the music plays.


ON THE BIG SCREEN

ST. ALBANS--Monkeying Around Play Center hosts a Family Movie Night on Friday at 6 p.m.
      The movie nights offer a place to sit down and watch a family movie while the kids play without disturbing the other viewers? Children are welcome and get to play in the center while the movie plays. Admission is free.
      The film will be announced Friday night, "based on a popular vote."
