The Big Music Weeks of Summer wrap up on Labor Day with concerts in Essex Junction, Milton, Montgomery, St. Albans, Stowe, and more. BIG MUSIC WEEKS
The 27th season of Summer Sounds brought exceptional performances "from away" with groups rarely heard here in Franklin County but the regular season came to an end last weekend. The series dodged rain drops a couple of times but we were outside in the park every Sunday. SUCCESSFUL SUMMER SOUNDS
The fireworks and Carol Ann Jones and the Superchargers got rained out on the Saturday Bay Day but Sunday dawned a perfect family day in the Bay for all. Anderson Gram and the Christopher Dean Band took shelter under the BBQ roof. Mango Jam returned to acclaim and David Rosane and the Zookeepers wowed the crowd. The Hokum Bros. Band, our Summer Sounds surprise, did not juggle chainsaws and harmonicas. And Mark Shelton and his Invisible Friends took the Town by storm on a perfectly clear evening.
Just before each concert, we enjoyed a Summer Sounds Social in the Park. The social hour is a chance to visit with friends and eat hearty.
The 2017 Summer Sounds concerts were sponsored by the Town of Highgate, the Town of St. Albans, and the All Arts Council, and underwritten by Chevalier Drilling Co. Inc, Desorcie's Market, Drummac Septic Service, La Quinta Inn and Suites of St Albans, O. C. McCuin and Sons, and Ray's Extrusion Dies and Tubing.
The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont. The concerts are always on Sunday evenings, always at 7 p.m., always in a Town Park, and always free "but we do pay the bands!" The rain site is the Highgate United Methodist Church. SWANTON--The Pop Up Pop In Gallery features the abstract and upcycled art of Anita Michele Parah and Judy Paxman in the temporary art gallery at 23 First Street on Thursday and Friday evening from 5 - 9 p.m. ART ON THE WALLS
Two local artists have shown their work each Thursday and Friday evening in the month of August. This is the final exhibition for this year. The "Pop up Pop in" space is a temporary art gallery for local artists to display and sell.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. All are welcome to meet the artists, view the work, and have the opportunity to purchase local artwork.
JERICHO--The Northern Vermont Artist Association Red Mill Show continues through September 30. The National Historic Site is one of two remaining mills out of eight that were once sited on the Brown's River's seven water privileges in Jericho.
The NVAA was founded by a group of artists in Burlington in 1931. Their first show featuring Maxfield Parrish was held at Ethan Allen Club that year.
ST ALBANS--The Northwestern Medical Center Gallery hosts landscape photographer Sandra Ferland of Enosburg in a solo show this month. Ms. Ferland is exhibiting metallic prints and metal prints of mostly landscapes and florals from New England. "I like metallic photographic papers because they make the colors pop," She said. The breathtaking metal prints are a relatively new art medium that infuses dyes directly into specially coated aluminum sheets.
Ms. Ferland will donate a portion of the sale of any image on the wall to the NMC Hospital Auxiliary.
The show continues through the end of September.

ST. ALBANS--It's a big music week for Labor Day at Twiggs as the restaurant-venue presents the duo of Jesse Potts and Andy Hoadley as Gypsy Wind on Thursday, music man Isaac French solo on Friday, original country legend and Summer Sounds favorite Mark LeGrand on Saturday, and the Jeff Salisbury Band playing danceable blues and vintage R&B in a special Labor Day performance on Monday. Shows begin at 7 p.m.

ESSEX JUNCTION--"The Ten Best Days of Summer," the Champlain Valley Fair, has some of the region's finest musicians including Tim Brick and Chris & Erica on different stages today, Bethany Conner tomorrow, Keeghan Nolan on Tuesday, plus Troy Millette and Dylan Gombas on Wednesday, alongside national headliners including John Mellencamp, Pentatonix, and more.
The Vermont Music Showcase takes over the Koffee Kup Stage at 11:00, 1:30 and 5:30, the Music Gazebo at 1:00, 4:00, and 6:15, and the Beer and Wine Garden each day.

ST. ALBANS--Durty Nelly's Irish Pub presents Kylie Live in the pub on Thursday at 6 p.m.
STOWE--Harrison's on Main Street has string magician Will Patton and ace flatpicker Mark Struhsacker on the front porch on Thursday at 6 p.m., weather permitting.
Friday
MILTON--Dynagrrrrrrrrrrl Carol Ann Jones and Will Patton rock the tent at Arrowhead Golf Course in the final Friday Night Live Music and Buffet event of the season on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
You don't have to be a member; the public is welcome. Be sure to come early, usually around 6, to make sure you get a good seat.
Saturday
MONTGOMERY--The monthly Celebration of Expressive Arts takes over the INN on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. The event officially includes everything but dancing, but there is always hope. Come early for dinner; service begins at 5 p.m
This month is a 5J Barrow Special Event Dinner Concert. The CEA gathers artists, writers and musicians to share original and thought provoking work, curated and hosted by Bob and Becca Cummins.

ST. ALBANS--14th Star Brewing presents AWTB on Saturday at 6 p.m.
All Without The Bass is a Plattsburgh acoustic pop band with Amber Johnston, vocals; Dan Bushey, guitar, drums, and vocals; and Michael Racette, guitar and vocals. They play a variety from the 80s-present with other classics and genres sprinkled in for good measure.
Sunday
ST. ALBANS--The First Congregational Church begins its first fall concert series with Arioso on Sunday at 3 p.m.
The chamber ensemble of the cello, viola, piano and voice of Linda Radtke, Alison Bruce Cerutti, and Elizabeth Reid will perform Bach and Brahms plus works written by Vermont composers Erik Nielsen, Michael Close, Kathy Wonson Eddy and Gwyneth Walker. Admission is by donation.
ONLINE--New England Foundation on the Arts hosts a webinar on the Jobs in New England's Creative Economy and Why They Matter online Wednesday from 3 - 4 p.m. Representatives from NEFA and the UMass Donahue Institute will present their study findings and a Q&A about the latest creative economy report, The Jobs in New England's Creative Economy and Why They Matter. FAIRFIELD--The Bent Northrop Memorial Library hosts Vermont writer (and Oleo Romeo singer-songwriter) Tyrone Shaw to read from his book, Bastard Republic, on Thursday at 7 p.m. FRANKLIN COUNTY BOOKSHELF
These Encounters Along the Tattered Edge of Fallen Empire are a mix of memoir, reportage, history, and travelogue inside two of the defining moments of the 20th Century, the collapse of communism in Europe and the implosion of the Soviet Republic. Mr. Shaw brings his academic "real life" to the writing and his wry, performance voice to the reading.
