     Franklin County's arts and music gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. There are also booked and acoustic Open Mic Nights that feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

SUMMER

      Today is the last full day of Summer but the weather is still great.


ART FOR THE WALLS

ST. ALBANS--Monkeying Around Play Center hosts its first Paint & Sippy party on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
      They're "putting all of our toys and play equipment away to host our very first artist in the house!" It is a paint and sip but with only the finest of juices for children who are able to sit and paint along with others. The cost is $20 for the evening and reservations are needed.

ST. ALBANS--The Grind Cafe hosts a Family Paint and Sip on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
      All ages are welcome to celebrate Autumn by painting a Fall picture on canvas. $20 per person includes all supplies, one non-alcoholic drink, and a fresh in-house-made cookie.


ST. ALBANS--Twiggs hosts Paint Nite: End of Summer on Tuesday at 7 p.m.       Artist Diane Kingston introduces "art to many that have never painted, and witnessing the thrill and confidence that comes from the creative process." Paint Nite will provide all the materials to create your own painting and provides "the refreshments you need!" This event is sold out.

ST. ALBANS--St. Albans Community Arts held its monthly meetings last week. Click here for the full Committee and Board minutes.


SWANTON--The Swanton Arts Council will hold a Let us 'Fall' into Art meeting and update at the Swanton Village Complex on Monday at 5:30 p.m. All are welcome.

DANCE

ENOSBURG--The Opera House at Enosburg Falls hosts a toe-tapping good Contra Dance with music by Red Dog Riley and caller Luke Donforth on Saturday at 6 p.m.
      Admission is $25 for a family of 4, $20 per couple, $15 for solo dancers, and $5 for kids.


ON STAGE LIVE

Thursday-Saturday
ST. ALBANS--The First Year Anniversary Survivor Show and TNT Comedy Showcase continues on the Main Stage at Twiggs on TNT Comedy Thursday at 7 p.m. Doors at 6:30.
      "365 days later and we are still alive in St. Albans," Suzan Ambrose said. She hosts open mic. The anniversary show will star Tracy Dolan (finalist, Vermont's Funniest Comedian 2016) and Bitsy Biron (FemCom, Green Mountain Comedy Festival), hosted by Owen Foley of Havoc Mead Comedy. This is a free show for mature audiences and space has been filling up quickly; call Twiggs to reserve a table. Make dinner reservations prior to the show since only drinks, appetizers, and desserts will be served during the show.
      Next up, Twiggs presents the well seasoned popular music of Roy and the Wrecks on Four Dollar Friday and the Burlington singer/songwriter Robin Gottfried Band on Saturday. Shows begin at 7 p.m.

ESSEX JUNCTION--On Tap offers Summer Sounds favorites Jenni Johnson and the Jazz Junketeers tonight at 7 p.m., up-and-coming Summer Sounds performer Bethany Conner & Friends tomorrow at 5 p.m., and the Bob Mackenzie Trio on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Friday NORTH HERO--The North Hero House welcomes singer-songwriter Carol Ann Jones with Will Patton at The Pier on Friday at 5:30 p.m.


ST. ALBANS--The Bandade Fall Tour brings Dave Richardson, Kevin Killen, and Knight Pines to the 14th Star stage on Friday at 6 p.m.
      Bandade supports the artists and their charities for the work they do. A portion of the show and merchandise proceeds is donated. Cancer patients, and survivors, get in free to all Bandade events.


Saturday
EAST FAIRFIELD--Summer Evenings with Vermont Treasures presents the long-awaited return of the Austin Piazzolla Quintet to the Meeting House on the Green on Friday at 7 p.m.
      This Austin, Texas, quintet specializes in unique arrangements of the late Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla plus fiery original nuevo tango. James Anderson, violin, founded the APQ in 2009.
      Admission for all concerts is by suggested donation of $10 per person at the door. All shows support the Meeting House Preservation Project. Call 802.827.6626 to reserve seats and pay at the door (reservations for this show are highly recommended). Refreshments including chili and cornbread, desserts, beer, and wine will be on sale. ST. ALBANS--14th Star presents St. Albans native Isaac French with Michael Brewster on the Taproom Stage on Saturday at 6 p.m.
      Messrs. French and Brewster will cover a broad range of genres with powerful vocals, piano, and guitar.


Sunday
MONTGOMERY--The monthly Celebration of Expressive Arts takes over the INN on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. The event officially includes everything but dancing, but there is always hope. Come early for dinner; service begins at 5 p.m
      This month, the featured musician is Tony Whedon, the featured writer is Dawn Reno Langley, and the featured artist is Janis Raffauf Hess. The local artists, writers and musicians gather to share original and thought provoking work, curated and hosted by Bob and Becca Cummins.

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER ART DEADLINES

NW NIGHTMARES (September 30)-- The non-profit series of scary, seasonal events encourages fun, creativity, and technical skills within our community. Each year local teams of amateur Vermont film makers submit their original short horror films to win cool prizes, bragging rights, and the chance to screen their movies on the big screen at the Welden Theater the night before Halloween.
      Northwest Access TV offers film workshops for $10, free equipment rentals, and a chance to scare the socks off your friends and neighbors.

TAM OVER 60 ART COMPETITION (October 2)--The Artist's Magazine contest is for artists age 60+ working in all traditional art media. There are small cash awards and other prizes; winners will appear in the magazine. Entry fee. Click here for more info.


ENDANGERED FINE ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST (October 8)--The online, juried contest offers $7,000 prize money and a Miami exhibition during Art Week in December. Entry donations go to Center for Great Apes, a sanctuary for orangutans and chimpanzees. Interpret Endangered through a celebration of the beauty of endangered/threatened species/habitats or through illustration of the threats facing endangered species/habitats. Entry Fee.
