     Franklin County's arts and music gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. There are also booked and acoustic Open Mic Nights that feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

MAYOR'S PHOTO COMPETITION

ST. ALBANS--Mayor Tim Smith and St. Albans Community Arts have announced the 2018 St. Albans Mayor's Photo Competition. This year, the contest celebrates the 100th anniversary of the St. Albans Cooperative Creamery with images that showcase local agriculture.
      15-20 photographs will be selected to be enlarged and displayed in Taylor Park throughout the fall. The photographs will be auctioned later this fall as a fundraiser to support St. Albans Community Arts.
      All photos, including cellphone photography, are welcome. Submit 8x10 prints of your entries but the winning images must support enlargement to 20"x30". All photos and submissions must be received by June 30. There will be a viewing/voting reception at City Hall on July 12 to choose the best photographs.

ART FOR THE WALLS

ST. ALBANS--Twiggs hosts Paint Nite: Butterflies Are Free on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
      Guided by a local artist Carrie Tatro, each person creates their own painting, made easy for all ages. All painting supplies are included, and food and drinks are available for purchase.

ST. ALBANS--Dance Works Academy returns to the BFA Performing Arts Center with The Wonderful World of DWA, a Disney-themed recital with two shows, on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Thursday
ST. ALBANS--The St. Albans Free Library presents its Summer Reading Kickoff Party with the Smokey Newfield Project on Thursday at 5 p.m.
      It's a chance to sign up the entire family for the Summer Reading Program, celebrate World of Music Day and the Summer Solstice with live music, food, and crafts for the kids.


ST. ALBANS--The St. Albans Museum hosts "Reading" Places: Art, Architecture, and Gravestones in Early Vermont, an Humanities for Everyone program this evening at 7 p.m.
      In developing their towns, early Vermont settlers created a wide range of things that spoke to their values, backgrounds, skills, and cultural attitudes. Their architecture, gravestones, furniture, ironwork, paintings, pottery, and textiles are evocative of specific people, places, and situations. This lecture and slide presentation by William Hosley demonstrates how art and artifacts can be used to understand historical experience while surveying the extraordinary visual allure of historic Vermont.


ESSEX JUNCTION--On Tap offers Jazz Night with Summer Sounds favorites Jenni Johnson and the Jazz Junketeers tonight at 7 p.m.

Thursday-Saturday
ST. ALBANS--The TNT Comedy Showcase and Open Mic continues in the Back Room at Twiggs on TNT Comedy Thursday at 7 p.m. Doors at 6:30. This is a free show for mature audiences and space fills up quickly; call Twiggs to reserve a table. Food and drinks will be served all evening.
      Next up, Twiggs presents acoustic-based pop/rock by singer/songwriter Ryan Sweezey from just outside of Boston on Thursday, local legends (the Balladeer and Bluesman) Cooper and Lavoie on Friday, and Vermont's Irish American O'hAnleigh on Saturday. Shows begin at 7 p.m.

Friday
MILTON--Arrowhead Golf Course hosts GSS for the Friday Night Live Music and Buffet on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The buffet (tacos!) starts around 7 p.m. Both run until 9 p.m.
      The buffet costs $11 per person ($5 for each child). You don't have to be a member; the public is welcome. Be sure to come early, usually around 6, to get a good seat.


SHELDON--Summer Music at Grace continues with Chasing 440 at Grace Church on Friday at 7 p.m.
      Franklin County's own David Benway, guitar and vocals; Amanda Benway, mandolin and vocals; Arnold Royea, fiddle and mandolin; Harley Paquette, banjo; Kimberly Provost, bass and vocals; play lively bluegrass in this bucolic setting.
      This is the 21st season of the popular and eclectic Summer Music at Grace series. A suggested donation at the door supports the musicians and this program. Bring a dessert to share at intermission. Beverages will be available. Call 802.326.3603 or click here for more info.


ESSEX--The Nobby Reed Project plays the Double E, the Essex Cinemas, on Friday at 7 p.m.
      No, they aren't playing "in the pit" for a silent movie.


Saturday
JEFFERSONVILLE--The Stragglers and King Me! to kick off Martell's Summer Concert Series at the Red Fox on Saturday starting at 4:30 p.m.
      The double bill of local fare is an all ages show that begins outside at 4:30 with the Stragglers. King Me! will take the stage at 6:45.
      Martell's will have a summer full of fun and music every Saturday on the new Gregory J. Martell Memorial Stage. Events will be family friendly and will feature some of Vermont best local musicians, along with some fabulous acts traveling from out of state. Admission will be $5-$10 and children 12 and under are free.


ST. ALBANS--14th Star Brewing Company presents the Lloyd Tyler Band live on the taproom stage on Saturday at 6 p.m.
      Using a mix of acoustic guitars, bass and harmonica, Zack Tyler and Jeff Lloyd draw from folk, country, rock, blues and Americana genres to their blend of covers.


EAST FAIRFIELD--Mary McGinniss and The Selkies continue the Summer Evenings with Vermont Treasures series at the Meeting House on the Green on Saturday at 7 p.m. Doors at 6:30.
      The insightful songwriter was inspired by British invasion rock n’ roll, folktales, jazz, and poetry. She sings and plays guitar on covers that range from Hoagy Carmichael to Annie Lennox, and is joined by Gus Ziesing, saxophonist and Cajun accordion; Steve Wienert, percussionist and Cajon player; and Juliet McVicker, electric bass and harmonies. Please do not pet the selkies for they may return to being seals.
      Light supper fare, beer, and wine will be available throughout the evening.
      The Meeting House series will showcase 10 great bands between May and November. Admission for all concerts is by suggested donation of $10 per person at the door. All shows support the Meeting House Preservation Project in East Fairfield, a historic landmark built circa 1866. Call 802.827.6626 to reserve seats and pay at the door.

ST. ALBANS--Music, Brews & BBQ presents Rushmore on Saturday in the Biergarten at Mill River Brewing. Shows start at 7 p.m.
      Bob Chevalier, lead vocals, piano, keyboard; Tim Comings, bass and vocals; Dave Hevrin, drums; and Mike Trombly, vocals and guitar; make Rushmore rock.
      Mill River is a sustainable, family-owned, brewpub serving their own VT craft beers. The BBQ & Smokehouse menu offers locally raised meats and produce, and baked goods made in-house.


Sunday
ST. ALBANS--Church Street Sounds of the Season presents MetalWerx at St. Luke's on Sunday at 3 p.m.
      MetalWerx is a tuba-euphonium quartet founded in 2013 to spread the gospel of tuba. Featuring Dale Long, Mike Paul, Tim Foley, Yutaka Kono (all on tuba & euphonium) the quirky program includes works by Vaughan Williams, Puccini, and John Williams.
      Admission is free by $10 suggested donation.


MONTGOMERY--The monthly Celebration of Expressive Arts continues at the INN on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. The event officially includes everything but dancing, but there is always hope. Come early for dinner; service begins at 5 p.m.
      This month, Laura Joy from Chicago returns as the CEA featured musician, four CEA community members (David Wisell, Kelee Maddox, Ward Heneveld, and Rebecca Cummins) participate in a new CEA format called Writers Relay, and Sandra fw Beatty shares her new approach to art. The local artists, writers and musicians gather to share original and thought provoking work, curated and hosted by Bob and Becca Cummins.

Tuesday
SOUTH HERO--Carol Ann Jones hosts Music in the Meadow at the Blue Paddle Bistro on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Ms. Jones will perform and then hold an Open Mic ever Tuesday, weather permitting, through the summer.
      There are tables and chairs outside but it can get pretty busy, so bring your own chair or blanket or come early to get a table or chairs. Email to sign up.


ENOSBURG FALLS--The Enosburg Town Band plays a weekly free summer concert in Lincoln Park on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
      Bring a chair or a blanket to enjoy an hour long concert under the stars under the direction of Alisa Martin. Performances will continue on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. through August 21.


Wednesday
SHELDON--Severy's Garden hosts the Sheldon Historical Society Afternoon High Tea Party on Wednesday at 3 - 5 p.m.
      The afternoon offers relaxation, conversation, and piano music in a country setting. There will be English tea, finger sandwiches, and delectable pastries served with a house tour, guest speaker, tea cup auction and much more. Bring your own tea cup and tell its story.
      Admission is $25 per person. Tickets are available at the Sheldon Town Office or call 802.933.4630 or email to reserve tickets.


MORRISVILLE--The Wednesday Night Live summer music series continues with Take Five Jazz Ensemble plus the Lamoille Dance Academy in Oxbow Riverfront Park on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The series continues each week through August 22. There will be a rotating mix of food vendors every week, from American barbecue to Nepalese staples.


ST. ALBANS--Sean Jarvis hosts Open Mic Night at Durty Nelly's Irish Pub on Wednesday starting at 6:30 p.m. Show off your talent; everyone is welcome to grab the mic and perform any Wednesday evening on the Tavern side.


ST. ALBANS--The Citizens Concert Band plays a free concert in the St. Albans Bay Town Park on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
      The rain site is on site although the concert will be cancelled if there is heavy rain.


ART TO MARKET!

ST. ALBANS--The Northwest Farmers Market is now open with local crafts as well as local food in Taylor Park from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. every Saturday until October 27, rain or shine. Many weekends will include special events and entertainment.
      This Saturday is Antiques and Vintage Day with a Tatting demo by April Gilbert.


FRANKLIN COUNTY BOOKSHELF

SWANTON--The Swanton Free Public Library needs a "person who can make objective decisions, is committed to building a better library, and has cool ideas." Yes, there is a vacant Trustee position on its Library Board of Trustees.
